Catch 22 has enjoyed a multitude of highs and lows over the years, the worst of which being the loss of three lead singers in the band's first five years. Still, Catch 22 has surged forward, and remains standing, with their proud heads held high, and arms outstretched in a salute to a dying ska-punk genre, that just years earlier enjoyed the praises of every teenager in middle America.

The New Jersey native's third full-length Dinosaur Sounds, which Victory Records released nationally on November 4, serves as a bittersweet reminder to the band of what it once was, and how far it has come in its seven years together.

Ryan Eldred (saxophone) and Kevin Gunther (trumpet) verbally spar and switch vocal duties on the album's 13 tracks, while balancing their horn duties as well. The only problem this creates is that Kevin can not play the trumpet and sing at the same time, and likewise, Ryan can not possibly play the saxophone and sing at the same time. This glaring weakness highlights the band's struggles with finding a permanent vocalist, but it also shows the respect with which the band treats its current line-up; hell, if Catch 22 is happy with Ryan and Kevin on vocals, then why shouldn't the fans be?

Whereas previous releases featured smash hits such as "1,2,3,4", ""9MM and a Three Piece Suit", "Dear Sergio", and "What Goes Around Comes Around", Dinosaur Sounds fails to offer up a heaping serving of hot songs, however, the band spreads out the musical well-being of the record, leaving the album with no obvious weaknesses. "Wine Stained Lips", the band's first single, falls short of the band's earlier classics due to its lack of energy. Explosive horns, sped up punk rock verses, and gigantic 80s guitar hooks create an unusual song, that will no doubt leave you singing along, but the urgency of a "true hit" never appears.

Mr. Reggae, Mr. Funk, and Mrs. Jazz are all knocking on the door, and wouldn't you know that The Hardcore's invited them in just as they were leaving the party. That is right, the heavily influenced hardcore songs from Alone in a Crowd are mysteriously gone, leaving Catch 22 to experiment with reggae, jazz, funk, and rock on this record. “Beguile the Time”, track two, is an obvious example of this laid back approach. The track highlight's both singer’s voices in the chorus creating a wailing, spacey feel to the music and horns.

Lyrically Catch 22 creates a storyteller's aura through the lyrics, despire never taking themselves too seriously. The band plays music for fun, and realized the reason they are so popular is that kids can listen to their music and have a good time.

Don't come into this record with expectations, and you will glide right into the new Catch 22 with a smile plastered across your face.

    My Score:

I remember first listening to Kaesby Nights and thought it was a little bit too grungy for my tastes.... but it quickly grew on me and has since become one of my favorite ska albums of all time. Being a late bloomer when it comes to the ska scene ....or the fact that I was still in elementary/ just into middle school when the ska boom hit and lived in a place with no radio stations; I didn't experience Kaesby Nights until around 2003 or so. One day while at the local record shop I saw this album and bought it immediately thinking, "Awesome, Catch 22!". I listened to the album twice; the first time I listened in disbelief at how different the sound had become and at how poor the lyrics were... the second time just to make sure I wasn't trippin' on acid the first time around. Don't get me wrong, this album has a few decent songs on it... but overall its a disgrace to Catch 22s discography.

Not a bad album, though it is no Keasbey Nights.

I have a copy autographed by the whole band.

Well, maybe he was referring to a live show(?). In other news, I just got this cd a couple hours ago. I was only able to listen to a few songs before coming to work, but I was mildly impressed, especially after hearing all the negativity. Motown Cinderella, Wine Stained Lips, and Lamont's Lament are all exceptional, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the album.

people say this band sucks now, but yet say ALiAc is a good album. Remember this is the same band that put out alone in a crowd, just minus the isnger. Keasby has 3 members so its sorta a different band.

Oh, is Pete Rose involved with cincipunk.com? You gotta watch out for that guy.

By the way: you should know that my site ( www.cincypunk.com ) had to delete its message board, because of the amount of violence that it was causing...

bands were getting shit up, jumped on the street, and stabbed for the comments made on our message board towards Cincinnati bands.

And another thing::: Why does everyone feel the need to be negative.. I realize you have to keep your scene cred alive, but I'm not afraid to admit that I'm fucking proud of Cincinnati bands and www.cincypunk.com is trying to help revive our shitty scene that is overflowing with hate and jealousy towards the successful bands in Cincinnati.

Shit- I would never give a great review to a band I can't listen to, but you have to understand that I'm a Journalism major, and I try to be unbiased, and listen a disc fairly even if it isn't my favorite style of music.

Also- I think people approached this record expecting "Keasbey Nights II" or a rebuttal to Streetlight Manifesto's first album...

Who gives a shit? Why would a band want to make the same record twice?

    Just my thoughts...

I gave Call Me Suzie a bad review... I gave Deadweight a bad review.

What band are you in again? The Gay Vultures... When was the last show you guys played?

8dollarclarinetsolo, you're a genious. I guess punk rock is all about not offending anyone anymore (props to Mark from Guttermouth). BTW, "Lamont's Lament" is the album's best track and I'm 99.9999995784% they opened with it when I saw them.

do you ever give cds anything outside of oh 5-8? especially on the local stuff, its like you dont want to offend anyone but you know a lot of people wont like it so you go in the middle... or maybe all the cincy stuff is just average music..... whatever i dont really care it was just an observation, anyway

i doubt ill pick this up but who knows

    My Score:

It's sad that the best song on the Cd is the only one without vocals. But, I think if Catch 22 survives without a lineup change into their next album (wouldn't that be a first) the singers will be much better, since they'll have more time to adapt and whatnot. But, gotta hand it to them, there arent a lot of bands I know that have had 3 full lengths with 3 different singers and still headline their own tours. Good album I think though, the 9 is because there is always room for improvement
