| Rancid / Tiger Army / Roger Miret and the Disasterslive in Toronto2003 live show Review by: Pat McGuire See others by this writer Only registered users can post comments Published on November 25th 2003
I arrived at the Kool Haus about half an hour before doors, and the line-up to get into the place was insane going around the entire block, but no one really cares about that, do they? On to the music. The night kicked off with Roger Miret and the Disasters who tore through a twenty minute set with a crazy amount of energy. I am really not into street punk, or New York hardcore, whatever, but these guys are great live performers. Despite most people being in the bar during their set, the energy was so high that it didn't matter for those of us in the pit. Highlights from their set include Boys Will Be Boys, Give 'Em the Boot, Radio, Radio, and My New York which was dedicated to Roger's cat Wheezy. Tiger Army was up next, and while there were a lot of people in the crowd really looking forward to seeing them, most people were just not into their set. That said, the people in the front were having a great time, a lot of circle pitting and crowd surfing, but still not enough to give the band the reaction they deserved. The bass player made futile attempts to try and get the crowd moving, but as the word futile implies it didn’t work. To their credit, these guys sound the same live as they do on record, which cannot be said for other bands (cough, Rancid, cough), and their bass player is just insane to watch live. Highlights include Nocturnal and Fuck the World (to be honest, these are the only two songs I can remember). After about a thirty minute set up time, the stage was ready for Tim and the boys to hit the stage. Oh, and they hit the stage alright; it was blatantly obvious from the moment Tim came on the stage (smoking no less) that he was highly intoxicated. That’s cool. Oh, but wait, there’s more, these guys sound nothing like they do on your favourite Rancid CD. Tim sounded like some guy doing a Tim impression; I don’t know what the hell is wrong with him. Other gripes? They played nothing off of Rancid 2000, which was a let down as I’d really would have liked to see Radio Havana. Still, this band is something special live, sure they really don’t live up to expectations but they still do get a crowd moving. Watching Matt Freeman do the bass solo from Maxwell Murder is really quite awesome, add that to Lars spitting on the crowd, and everyone around you pushing and dancing and just having a good time, you tend to forget that Tim Armstrong is a gigantic fraud. most of my favorit bands in one spot cool. I was at the quebec city show of this tour and it's true that tim wasn't very cool on scene. But the show was so awesome!!! disgusting review. ''Tim and the boys'' are sober since the nineties now... I'm from detroit & i made it to this show in toronto cuz of the bull shit show with BNL at $50 a tick. Rancid is my alltime favorite. Third time seeing them and it was the best show ever! I missed this tour cuz the only show they played in Detroit was a hug radio show thing were tickets were like 50 bucks and they were playing with the Barenaked Ladies.... Anyway, did the play "Spirit of 87" or "Let me Go" on any of these tour dates. ROGER MIRET AND THE DISASTERS PHOTOS Aw fuck, they played Hoover Street? Shit, I wanted to hear that live at some point. This fucking tour needs to come to Florida. er.. i got owned. thats right janelle, knock him down a few pegs!! "Side note: the disasters didn't play my new york, they played new york belongs to me, clash cover. sorry, was really sick and tired while writing this." ...they WERE a lot better on the Rancid 2000 show. I was also at the show in LA, and I've gotta say that Tiger Army stole the show! Rancid was good, but it really felt like Lars and Matt were carrying the band now. Tim just looked like he didn't want to be there; he ran off-stage every time he was done singing his part during the first third of their set, and just kinda twirled around on the middle of the stage for the rest of the show. Lars also sung quite a few of Tim's parts, and the set seemed to be made mostly of songs Lars had the lead to. Rancid still put on a good show (Matt's extended bass solo on Maxwell Murder was badass, as was Lars' solo of To Have and to Have Not), but I have to say that as a whole, they was a lot better on the Rancid 2000 tour. Side note: the disasters didn't play my new york, they played new york belongs to me, clash cover. sorry, was really sick and tired while writing this. it is fucking strange that his voice changes so drastically from one record to the next Hahaha... I like how Lint is trying to wear a gangsta rag on his head now to cover up his baldidity. Lint rules the earth!!! Ok.. the fraud was a JOKE.. jesus fuck I know tim is the man, shit guys you all need to lighten up a bit. Tim is sober you idiot, punknews.org should be sued for slander. "Tim Armstrong is a gigantic fraud" Dee Dee Owns. They should call it Ramones St. or whatever. Fuck it. I know I know, BSD - but I just LOVE Dee Dee - and yes, I know they should BOTH be up there! Why does everybody keep making fun of Tiger Army? I think they are fucking awesome, but it seems as though noone on this site likes them. I love dick. In Davis, the first night of the show, Lars did a solo version of To Have and To Have Not. Or whatever it was called, by Billy Bragg. PSS And plus, you can be a literal DISTILLER! PS Distill your listerine or else you'll die from poison. Yeah, Dee Dee was great, but I disagree that he could do no wrong. Probably why his name isn't up there... He died in the most cliche way possible, but JOEY on the other hand... Well, actually, no great punk who's passed on deserves to be at the top of a site where teeny-boppers come to mock them... ...or listerine...it's really all the same in the end. Just one leaves a nice cool mint flavour... Upon hearing Dee Dee's futile attempts at rap, I drowned myself in quasi-legal liqour... Shut up. TO THE REVIEWER: You are a fucking idiot. I've been into this music longer then you've been alive, and I am disgusted that this site would even post such nonsense. This site has produced some of the most idiotic reviews I've ever read in my life. Little kids telling me that Tim Armstrong is a fraud is absolutely laughable. why does rancid always tour with these shitty bands? a tour with Taking Back Sunday would be narly. Whether you like Rancid's music or not, you gotta respect their song writing and stage presence. Goddamn faggots again putting shit in parenthesis at the end of their posts. Ok fine, so he wasn't drunk, but still this guy doesn't sound anything like he does on cd, you can't argue that. ooh then he'd be like Dee Dee Ramone - Dee Dee King's "Standing In The Spotlight" anyone? fuck yeah. I heard Lars was gonna do a Rap album called: What the fuck. I was at this show and this review is totally wrong. Tim wasn't drunk. I've seen them do club shows 4 times now and Tim was the same as those other shows. Why do idiots like this that don't even like the bands go to the show? They're gonna bash them whatever happens. Rancid is one of the most entertaining live. They're not gonna sound like their album because they jump around the stage the whole night. Lars needs to do another album with The Bastards Lars did the skinhead rob part in NYC, and it was fuckin awesome. Skinhead douche sucks Viddy some of my photos from the NYC show: "MPD? Nation is in DC my friend, how did you get a ticket from the Maryland 5-0? I saw the show in Boston, and NYC. All i can say is Tiger Army could be the worst band ever. The seriously suck. Sorry. The slackers were a pleasent surprise, and Roger Miret did a great job. Rancid is Rancid they rule. They were into both shows, played thier hearts out, and tore the roof off. On a side note: Lars did the skinhead rob part in NYC, and it was fuckin awesome. Skinhead douche sucks Yes, they're involved with Warner, but they're not signed to Warner. Warner is distributing the CD and doing other promotional stuff for them. But I was mainly saying "They're not signed to Warner, so stop saying that, please." _911: The dc show was good, the slackers stole the show... Tiger army did not seem to have the energy that they had the last time they were here-oldpunker- "They're not on Warner, so shut up." Tiger Army sucks, Rancid rules You gotta love the morons who still believe that Rancid is not in bed with Warner Bros. Carl Jung was a fraud Freud! Yea...I think Tim has been off the drink for quite some time. Why don't Rancid fans review Rancid shows? Why do raving morons (who don't like any of the bands anyway) review the shows? And come on, the Rancid bashing is old now. They're not on Warner, so shut up. this show was great and so was the ottawa one.. awesome seeing tim from ensign roadie for them.. also met nick 13 cool guy man, the last time i saw rancid the roots radicals/i wanna riot single had just come out.. and after seeing that set list i dont think i ever want to see them again... only one song off the 1st LP fuck that. i guess im living in the past when it comes to Rancid... oh well If Tim wasn't intoxicated there is something terribly wrong with him. I saw that show back in LA a couple of weeks ago, except Tiger Army and Nekromantix opened. I've never seen any psychobilly bands before that one night, but Nekromantix was quite entertaining. Rancid was so so. Oh, and the highlight of the night was when I saw Matt Freeman extend that "Maxwell Murder" bass solo into a two minute crazy freestyle super solo. Damn, he's good. tiger army is a horrible band. psychobilly my ass. Yeah, Tim is a fraud... Rancid is nothing great, though they're better than most of the pop-rock of today, their constant striving for a more "punk" image kills them in my head. yikes. Armstrong 'so tim is a freud because....' Wanted to go to see Tiger Army ... I've seen Rancid 5 times and I know for a fact they blow ass "they covered agnostic front's gotta go" The fraud part was a joke.. its just disapointing to see him and have him sound totally different than on cd. "they covered agnostic front's gotta go" Tim is a fraud. Pretty fucking stupid statement man. Without Tim, there is no Rancid. No need to say anything further. If you've seen Rancid enough times, you also are familiar with his demeanor while on stage. This generally consists of him flying around, falling down, etc. That doesn't mean he's drunk. Seeing as how he's a recovering alcoholic, maybe you should put more thoughts into statements like that before you make them. i was the guy in the home taping is killing music shirt this show was ok. The disasters were the best i'd say, they were fucking rocking. tiger army was nice to see, and I was really to tired for rancid. This review was good, but here's how I would make it better: "if you're seeing these shows, basically expect a shit load of material from let's go/and out come the wolves...one thing i should mention is they didn't play time bomb at the dc show." Done, thanks. To the reviewer, Rancid played 'Rigged On A Fix' off of the album Rancid 2000. Some other songs that you forgot from their set list were: Hoover Street, Out of Conrol, Hyena, Salvation, Listed M.I.A., She's Automatic, and The Wars End. can you change the score to 8 please if you're seeing these shows, basically expect a shit load of material from let's go/and out come the wolves, a few off life won't wait, a few off rancid 2000, and a handful of songs from their new record. but they don't disappoint. one thing i should mention is they didn't play time bomb at the dc show. I was at this show, and I don't think that Tim was drunk. Maybe he might have been drinking before the set, but he wasn't as intoxicated as you wrote. To the person who said that they heard that Tiger Army were covering a Morrissey song, it's true they did. They also played a song off of their upcoming album, but I forget the name of it. I would love to see Rancid live... I've been going to shows for so fucking long, and I still haven't seen them. i went to the dc show. the disasters were awesome. they covered agnostic front's gotta go and clash's career opportunities. slackers were really good too. tiger army blew. every other song by them sounded exactly the same. rancid played about 25 songs i think and lots of old shit. great show overall. MPD? Nation is in DC my friend, how did you get a ticket from the Maryland 5-0? so tim is a freud because he doesn't sound the same live, which he did last time i saw them? interesting logic there... 2 comments: I was gonna drive to DC to see this, kinda glad I didn't now. nyc show was cool. highlight was Roger Miret And The Disasters, no doubt!!!! i heard that tiger army was covering morrissey's "the loop" on this tour. woulda loved to see that, but not worth shelling out $20 and having to be in a huge venue with a bunch of idiots. Tiger Army rocked the shit out of Rancid in Chicago but we got no Disasters ;(;( Only 12 songs? No encore? "you tend to forget that Tim Armstrong is a gigantic fraud." |
