Reviews

This review will NOT mention some suspect advice I got from Scott at the end of the show.

After an ivigorating 6-7 hour drive back from Iowa (who am I kidding, boring as shit), and picking up a friend of mine, (name changed to protect the innocent) Milo, we headed off to see Millencolin at the Metro.

Alright, by now you've noticed I haven't mentioned eiether of the two "support bands", and that's for a simple reason, the old saying, if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

Matchbook Romance took the stage at 6:45 and promtply made me bask in their simple mediocrity. Neither terribly good, nor terribly bad, they straddled the line amiably, and ended cursing too much, even for a punk rock show. Their Used-esque sound showed glimmers of breaking out, but as soon as those moments came, they vanished into the background, almost getting me to beg, PLEASE DEAR LORD DON'T KILL THAT GREAT IDEA!!! Their stage presence seemed nil, and while not remarkable, not a band you'd pay to see again.

After that Senses Fail came on. Get Budddyhead on the line right now. There must be some award for complete and utter crappiness that they can recieve. I mean, can't someone make up a trophy with a big picture of an ass on it and say "You guys suck so much ass, we just had to give you a trophy?" As Milo noted, "There's a reason why they're called Senses Fail." Once again, another bunch of Drive Thru suburban white boys screaming incoherently. I suppose this may be an improvement from the pee and potty jokes that are the label's modus operandi, though it may indeed have been regressing. The lead singer, as already mentioned, is exactly the portrait of a douche. His hair, a black mullet esque job with a bleached front already sounds disgusting, but when you marry it to a guy who just said "check out my new NYC tattoo" on stage, another one of those white tshirt fools and the most annoying drunken stupor known to man, you want to slit your wrists. Live, if you ever, ever needed to know the sound of your ears bleeding, look no further. "But what about the rest of the band?" you ask. There must be some good to them. Right?

Nope. Seriously, I gave SF a fair shake. Sure, it sounds like I'm being tough on them, but that's because they really are that bad. They're completely bland, and I really could not care whether they sell any more records or not. No, wait, I hope they don't. Cool track jacket, though. I still want buddyhead on the line.

Ahhh. The reason why I came, why I sat through the awful, awful, awful Senses Fail, the lame support bands, though Milo still contends there really wasn't much support. MILLENCOLIN.

Millencolin slayed. That's all.

Set list: Caps and then the underline mean after the song there's some period of stage banter.

    My Score:

Yeah, Millencolin has to be about the weakest of the Swedish Bands to cross over. This skater guy who used to sell really terrible weed out of his dorm room was all over these guys.
Pop-punk has got to be Sweden's weakest area, musically speaking.

Sweden's hardcore scene is out of hand, with bands like I Quit, SkitSystem, Totalitar and Krigshot...amongst others.

Too bad every self-proclaimed punk in america only knows Sweden for this band and the Refused.

And, millencolin isn't that big in Sweden, they had problems selling out a 1400 capacity venue in the capital, and people came from everywhere since it was their first proper show in sweden in 5 years...

...Home from home didn't sell that well either and the only reason why they won "best swedish rock" in some tv award show was because it was fans-only voting and they were up against 3 bands who weren't even rock... and they flooded their mailinglist about it.

Millencolin... "Home From Home" was shite. Their only record I ever thoroughly enjoyed was "For Monkey". And that was like seven years ago.

    My Score:

Millencolin will probably stick with Burning Heart since Erik does work with the owner and all, but I could see them doing something like Rancid and getting a Major distrobution deal since they've made it so big in Sweden (enough to win Swedish rock of the year) and they could very well break through and become fairly mainstream in the US. Sadly, I'm willing to bet that their next album gets produced by their proclaimed idol, Brett Gurewitz, and they release it through a major.

    My Score:

Bashing senses fial should be prohibited.

Seriously, its like insulting the word stupid for being what it is.

The band is a blackhole in music that sucks in all the goodness around it, and churns out awful psuedo-emotional babble afterwards.

I cannot say enough bad things about them, and if you think there drummer is good (even for 16) then just...fuck you. Seriously. Stop listening to music, some people actually give a rats ass about it rather then its fashion, and a 16 year old playing generic ass beats does not make him talented. Anyone can get the mechanics down within a year, it takes a real writer to come up with a good drumline. This is the same shit that any of the thousands of Thursday wannabe band drummers would have farted out. Disgusting.

    But I digress.

From now on, the name of the band senses fail is a insult.

    EXAMPLE=

You know what the band matchbook romance reminds me of? Senses Fail.

    Yeah, they are THAT bad.

    My Score:

WOW. You are good to moan but when come the time to say something good about a band, you have not much to say. You wrote about Senses Fail's fashion. Why not tyoing about the Millencolin's members one? They are a part-owner of a clothing store, it would have got a point there....or why you did mention the Millencolin guitarist is a huge fan of Matchbook roamnce? or either if he were wearing his huge bagues or not? cause it's would be pointless you would say to me. Nikola makes often special things on scene. Did you even notice one of them? Damn, you are a weak reviewer and I hope they don't pay you for the crap you just pooped.

So, obiviously, the 10 goes to Millencolin, Senses Fail and Matchbook Romance performances, surely not for that smelly shit you did write about them.

    My Score:

even though it was millencolin playing, they got boring after the first 5 songs, they played all the best ones right in the beginning. matchbook romance needs a new singer. every time i read a review on senses fail by anyone, it's the longest and most detailed review out of any of the other bands playing the show...and they're not even the headliner. Last time I saw them was with Brand New at the metro, they had a crowd response comparable to brand new's. I'm wondering if it's either the fact that they are 16-21 years old that has everyone so jealous of them. Everyone also is forgetting that the songs they are playing are 2 years old and are demo songs that they decided to sell as their EP. I'm going to wait til the full length comes out to actually give them some fair criticism. I mean if they can get that big off of demo songs, I'm going to keep my mouth shut.

To whom ever made the comment about the smashing pumpkins drummer...seriously shut up because that was the worst example of a great drummer. give the kid from SF credit, he's 16 and his band is bigger than yours, if you're in one...for one, and second you should've used dillinger escape plan or something like that.

    suck my dick.

Millencolin was surprisingly good at this show. I've been a fan of the band ever since Life On A Plate, but for whatever reason I just figured that they wouldn't be that good live - maybe it was their recent lack of touring coupled with lack of new material. They definitely rocked it, though, and while they didn't play all my favorite songs, they still touched on every album. Kudos for that.

Too bad the opening acts were bland personified [although to be fair, Matchbook Romance was much better live than on CD].
