In an age where kids who claim to like punk rock haven't even heard the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, or the Clash, people who actually know and care about music seem to increasingly depend on interesting reissues like these... I'd heard of, but hadn't heard too much Chaos UK before this, and now I'm hooked.

The first eleven (of twenty two) tracks are from their debut LP. Most of these songs are thrashy, pre-Crust pogo-punk songs. The guitar is barely audible in spots, just a crackling static totally submerged behind the super fast rhythm section. The singer growls/shouts out oft-sarcastic rants about the government, society, and the threat of nuclear war that was hanging over their heads at the time.

The tempo is relentlessly fast on the first three tracks, interrupted by two slower songs, ("The End is Nigh"- guess what that's about... Nuclear war! "Victimised"- an attack on the police, of course.) which incorporate a Killing Joke drum style that keep things from becoming monotonous. These two tracks end, and thusly the riot runs uninterrupted until track 11, "Farmyard Boogie", a joke song of sorts... It has a brilliant line, though:

"You can keep yer Oi! for boneheads
Shove it up yer ass!
I don't want your bull shit,
And I ain't workin' class!"
The rest of the CD is a collection of earlier (?) demos and singles, including a faster version of "Victimised" and their catchiest ever song, "Kill Your Baby". The guitar on these tracks sounds much less subdued, and the vocalist sounds much more like Steve Ignorant.

Anyone who likes UK 82 probably already has this, as they should. Anyone who likes real hardcore (no wankfest solos or metal riffs) that they can pogo around to should pick this up.

As far as old-school punk bands go, I'd say the Pistols commonly get bunched up in what the zombie-children call "punk rock".

Not that I actually like them though, I'm just saying this as a casual comment."

Yeah, how much you wanna bet not one of them has heard the entirety of Nevermind the Bollocks, though? A lot of kids like that make lame attempts at namedropping that never work. They all need to get Discharge and Chaotic Dischord patches to solve their woes!

"Pick up "Punk And Disorderly Volume 1" or the "UK/DK" soundtrack for more rad UK punk tracks (i.e. non-oi, though there are classic oi tunes like Blitz "Someone's Gonna Die")."

Definitely. I have that on DVD and it is great. It should have been noted that these guys are considered "old school" in the review, meaning they started their own unique sound. This sounds nothing like the Exploited, GBH, or Discharge, who were all much more popular than Chaos UK. This is "original" hardcore, having started when hardcore bands had their own sound.

Pretty vital stuff, these Brits are the real deal. Fucked up bootleg cider from the countryside fuels this band. Personally, their "Cider Up Landlord" 7-inch kicks my butt the most, though their covers split with Raw Noise "Making A Killing" is also fucking brilliant. "Four Minute Warning" is the classic track (like Vice Squad's "Last Rockers" or Peter and the Test Tube Babies "Banned From The Pubs"), it's on "Punk and Disorderly Volume 1". Chaos U.K.'s sound is much the same throughout, no bad metal years here! Pick up "Punk And Disorderly Volume 1" or the "UK/DK" soundtrack for more rad UK punk tracks (i.e. non-oi, though there are classic oi tunes like Blitz "Someone's Gonna Die").

P.S. I would have included more about Chaos UK in the review, but really, the music speaks for itself. People don't want to read some longwinded overview of their career, and if they do, there are sites, magazines, and books for that. I don't know how you got out of my review that I don't know about this music (I was into this crap way before I'd heard Chaos UK, but I won't get into that). It's fucking offensive!

Nothing's really changed with Rancid. Their sound is pretty much the same and shit but Lars was the only one that didn't want nothin' to do with the major label. I think that's why they decided to just have Warner do some advertising and promoting instead of doing the full switch over. That's why they're still with Hell-cat and Epitaph.

    My Score:

we're talking about rancid in a Chaos UK review? cool... but i think rancid used to say stuff like that, but those are just rumours. I know Lars was really against major's but I think the other 3 members didn't really give a shit. I think that's why when Rancid decided to let Warner Bros. distribute them, Lars was the only one trying to defend it

Didn't Rancid used to shout "fuck major labels" and stuff like that?

"Rancid is overrated, it's as simple as that. I know, the term overrated is used way too much these days, but it's a pretty fair description."

They're not overrated. What bands deserve more publicity and positive exposure instead of Rancid? Most of you are just angry about success. Rancid deserves everything they have. Yeah the last year has been weird with all that Warner, Good Charlotte, Pink and even Transplants (i like) shit but how did they get so much attention before that? Their music. The mainstream came to them and they didn't give in to anything.

Well Rancid is my favourite band and UK82 happens to be my favourite type of music and Chaos UK is also a favourite. The Crass blow - stupid hippies, Dirt are just a shitty Crust-Punk and I like Fear cause they're from LA and there's not much good street punk from LA

I think it's probably about time for this site to have a "Punk 101" section with an index of older bands, notable albums and maybe a short synopsis of their respective sounds. That way kids who come on here and only know a handful of acts could get exposed to more of the classics, and maybe we could expand their knowledge base and appreciation and, by extension, get better new bands recognized in the long run. And maybe it would end these "Fuck you, you don't know shit, I'm the official punk rock museum curator, you fucking poseur" threads.
