This 3-song EP is not only a perfect representation of how fun Saturday Looks Good To Me's infectious life show is, it also serves as a debut of Polyvinyl Records' new mailorder-only EP series.

The packaging is simplistic but telling, with the cover art showing a tambourine hitting a girl's hip. The music within is as fun as that tambourine-hip combination, if not more so.

All three songs are more straightforward than those that graced the band's most recent full-length, All Your Summer Songs [review], mainly due to the recording process. These songs are, for the most part, stripped of all the sound effects and distortions that were on their previous effort, instead just being as cut-and-dry as 60's-esque pop songs can get [complete with kitschy horn lines and a harmonica popping up in "When You Go Out Tonight"].

These songs have been staples in the band's live show for the past year, and it's nice to finally have a recorded version of them, especially one that captures the excitement of seeing the band live. Just hearing the frantic guitar riff kicking off "Girl Of Mine" makes me want to get up and dance like it was the prom in Back To The Future all over again.

A worthy addition to your collection, and a great introduction to someone who has never heard of Saturday Looks Good To Me before. Plus, the CD is limited to only 700 hand-numbered copies, and will never be repressed, so get them while they're hot.

    i completely agree..
south park is so much more intelligent and subversive than any other show on tellevision today.

    I'm dead fucking serious.

Some of you skeptics and cynics out there are gonna barrade (i think that's how you spell it) me with stupid, brainless comments about how this show is better than south or park or how that show is better than south park. Simply put: South Park and Simpsons are the two greatest shows on network television (i know south park is on cable).
"But South Park is tastless and crude-the jokes are stagnant and ephemeral in their impact on my humor"--shut your spurious comments up, and listen to me: i agree that family guy is incredibly funny (im offended; not retarded) and i hope to god it come back on the air (i think comdey central bought the rights ot it...[i know its on cartoon network]), but to say such bogus statements is a travesty. South Park has progressively gotten smarter and more political in the recent seasons and i think that that has really added to the potentiality of jokes and scenarios that that sick fuck of a writer Trey Parker can come up with.
I got my dad onto south right after the movie came out (second season i think) and he was laughing so hard in that theater, people were fucking shushing him!
So please, the next time you make a diachotomy of bad and good or better or worse, just remeber, if you put south park or simpsone lower than family guy, it is then, to me, void in all integrity and intelligence.

    This ends now.

Saying the Family Guy is better then The Simpsons is so ridiculous, it borders on lunacy. The Simpsons is not only the funniest, Most quotable television program ever made, but also well written, thought provoking, and even heartfelt sometimes. Family Guy is more like skits strung together incoherently. The jokes are funny, but as ashow without humor it fails. The only characters I truly enjoy are Stewie and Brian. All the other characters are paper thin cliches that work for nothing more then aparatus to deliver (devilishly) funny jokes. Not only are all the characters in the simpsons more fleshed out in every respect then family guys cast (and that includes the side cast, im pretty sure "Willy" has more to him and is funnier then Peter).

And when it comes down to it...

I have seen the same Simpsons episodes 30 times and up, and they still make me laugh hystericaly, the jokes are timeless, and i am always astounded by the whole "we have 3 plots going on at once" thing that thy used to have in the older episodes.

I will agree that family guy is a bit funnier then new simpsons, but it couldnt be touched before that.

The only thing that is equal to the simpsons in my book is current south park. South Park has been getting progressively better and better, and it is borderline genius now.

    My Score:

Family Guy is definitely similiar to the Simpsons in some aspects, but the one MAJOR difference is its 'flashback' use if you want to call it that. It's the only schizophrenic cartoon to use multiple references to cancelled television shows, poorly-executed movies, washed-up celebrities, and the family's personal past that many times. Plus they have pulled the unneccessarily-stretch-the-scene-out thing on more than one occasion (Peter stubs his knee and the chicken fight), which is REALLY irritating beyond the second time you watch it.

Both shows are at the top of their game (regardless of being cancelled or not) but Simpsons has the longevity factor which makes it that much better. I think this season is going well and an animated show staying relevant and funny after fifteen years is ridiculous.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, January 11, 2004 at 12:34 PM (EST)
    My Score:

I think what it really comes down to for me, is that Simpsons has more staying power with me. I've seen all the Family Guy episodes approximately 10 times, and I just can't extract much more funny from them. But there are so many episodes of the Simpsons that I can't get tired of them, and even ones that I've seen 4 dozen times, are still hysterical.

Both shows are fantastic. At it's best, Family Guy tops The Simpsons. Maybe not in quality of plots or character development, but in sheer laughs. Of course Family Guy is stupid, but so is almost every great cartoon......Bevis and Butthead, Ren and Stimpy, Cartoon TV Funhouse, everything on Adult Swim. Plus Lois is hot.

    My Score:

Im going to bed but first your comparison of characters is way off. While Peter and Homer are both fat stupid people, that can be explained by stating that so is half of the U.S. So don't pretend Homer was the first fat and stupid character. And the mom from family guy is nothing like Marge. While Bart is a trouble making smart alec, Chris is fat and weird(ohh my God HE MUST BE THE FIRST FAT WEIRD KID EVER!!!!) and the two babies are on such different ends of the spectrum I can't believe you'd even try to mention that as one of your arguments.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, January 10, 2004 at 11:18 PM (EST)
    My Score:

The humor in Family Guy is just... stupid...

And it is a rip off of the Simpsons... IE: A twist on the normal "white family dynamics" sitcom set up. A dumb dad, a troublesome son, a wife who's right most of the time, a baby that is smart, and a daughter who is normal.

In cartoons, that started with the Simpsons, basically. The difference is, whereas Family Guy likes to just drop you into weird situations with little reason for the father's actions, Simpsons has had character developement, making their off the wall humor make a lot more sense than Family Guy's...

If the Simpsons just started three or four years ago (when they started doing the minorly annoying "show takes a 180 degree plot twist in the middle" thing), it wouldn't be very funny. That's why Family Guy isn't.

Family Guy himself is a Homer clone, no getting around that. But while the Simpsons is loosely realistic, and has been adding black humor on lately, Family Guy messes up in doing that... He can play piano really well when he's drunk? Ohhh in the clever Willy Wonka spoof, they don't BELCH, they FART!!!

That, my friends, is just stupid. It's why Scary Movie(s) are just trite and unfunny. Trying to make fun of something that was light-hearted to begin with won't work.

    My Score:

Don't get me wrong, the simpsons is good, Ive been a dedicated watcher of the show until recently when I got all the Familiy Guys on DVD. The last 5 or so new simpsons episodes I've watched have been pretty damn stupid, I chuckled maybe twice during each episode. I'm in tears 5 or 6 times during a Family Guy episode. Plus the simpsons first 3 or 4 episodes are complete garbage.

Honestly if you think Family Guy is a ripoff or you think its slapstick humor you are ignorant of the genius of the show.

And too BSD, that bringing his gun to England is such a predictable Homer joke, but funny none the less. The onefamily guy moment I can think of is the one where Brian and Stewie are hitch hiking home and they ride in the back of a pickup with mexicans, I could explain further but you just have to see it.

    My Score:

I'm 16 and grew up with the Simpsons.

Most kids my age seem to be too stupid to know when new episodes are on. I think the only Simpsons they've seen are the oldest ones (when Homer's head was less rounded and the mouth opening was done real sloppy-like), which I think are too tame and predictable. Then they got really good. Now the Simpsons is really over-the-top weird, which isn't great, but still better than most other shows.

What single moment in Family Guy is better than Homer promising Marge that their trip to England will go better than all their vacations of the past, to then turn around to a gun cabinet and perplex over the question "Now which gun should I take with me?"

Simpsons in it's golden age (around Seasons 4-10) was THE best television show ever. It absolutely obliterates Family Guy. I do love Family Guy, but the older Simpsons episodes just destroy Family Guy. The Simpsons actually had jokes that were smart and meant something (and the show actually had a good heart to it, it was honestly touching at times). Family Guy's humor is more of the "Oh my god, he fell through the table and it broke!" kind of humor. Now I DO like that humor, so I'm not putting Family Guy down. But sheesh, the people who are saying Family Guys is better must be like 16 years old or something and thus, they did not grow up on the Simpsons.
