Easthampton, Massachusetts's The Skeptics play a style of uptempo, somewhat-poppy punk that is extremely similar to the handful of bands that have used ska upstrokes early in their careers (Millencolin, Mest [Mo Money, Mo 40z era]). The one major difference is in the production, which sounds iotas better than the releases implied by those bands, especially when considering the album is self-released.

This scattering of upstrokes doesn't make for the most original of times on their debut full-length as the press release might make it out to be, but keeps things interesting and *fun* (I'm using this word lightly). Vocally, they mix two parts Nikola from Millencolin, and one part the backup singer from Midtown.

The band throws out a fairly varied number of themes, whether it be the metaphorically cannibalistic activities spoke of in "My Cannibal," grieving over a mistake in "Frail," or the most uptempo, raw number, "Matt's Song," an ode to a passed-on friend. "Bein' Friends" contains the pseudo-funk guitars reminiscent of Zebrahead's "Movin' On," and the two acoustic tunes also provide welcome departures from the mood.

MP3s
"My Cannibal"
"Older"
"Firing Squad"
"Playing Dead"

STREAM "Pass Away"
"Frail"
"Burn Your Script"
"Hard of Hearing"
"This Fight"

I love this album, I listened to it like everyday for the past two years or so, and then one day it broke. I've been looking in stores for it but I've come out with no luck. I've heard some songs off the new album, but I still think the first one is better.

"Its the obnoxious sense of elitism, that if you don't know that "Blah Blah Blah" came before "Dippity-Doo" and that "Hoogity-Boogity" is actually this style, and not that, that a person doesn't know shit."

Yah damn right! Just shut up and listen to the music. You think real "punks" spend their time on internet message boards? No. Their out kickin ass and goin to shows. No one cares that you know about all these obscure bands, because guess what....it doesn't matter.

Oh, and the Skeptics are an extremely hardworking and talented band from Western MA...not to mention that they are cool shit. I can guarentee that everyone posting here has never seen this band live, so shut up about their music. They rock.

    GreenVandal (January 26, 2004)

Well i still kind of think you are a dick. A big one.

    But then again

You make the little kids here cry and I think that is good fun.

And I like my politics quite fine thank you. Although I do just make shit up to piss people off half the time....like when I told that kid that we should kill Isreal cuz they are the center of all hate.

    That got a good reaction.

I'm glad you saved me from checking out this band. I'm forever in your debt.

I don't mind your shaky personal politics any longer!

    GreenVandal (January 25, 2004)

Age aint nothing but a number kids. And BSD apparently does know more then you THAT GUY. Id also like to state that THAT GUY is a fucking assclown.

    Goddamn I hate you!

    Can we vote him off??

And Janelle I wasnt trying to start shit...just showing that I know who the X-Ray Specs are so that BSD will think im cooler.

    Anonymous (January 25, 2004)

Hhahahaha. This score is for tough guy pop punkers and their asskickingness.

I agree about the egos thing, too. I was at a girl's birthday where she hired a local shit pop band to play, and the guys were total assholes to her. According to the frontman, he didn't agree to the amount he was playing for and wanted more.

    How punk rock.

    What a dick.

those fucking pussies can bring it on, and so can you. all that shit band knows to do is sell overpriced merch to little girls and influence smaller local bands to have huge egos too.

if you purchased the cd, listened to all the tracks, or maybe bought the demos or heard them live, you would realize using the cliche of "emo" is far too less. and plus, these guys would be happy to kick your ass anyday.

    Anonymous (January 24, 2004)

uch another emo shit band. local punks once again trying to make it big. fuck these guys.

    Anonymous (January 24, 2004)

Yeah man BSD is a fucking genius!!!

    Anonymous (January 23, 2004)

As for sickboi's comment: I never claimed to be an expert (though I am compared to most people who comment here), so I don't care about your "far from expert" accusation.

I'm not for everyone being music snobs, but I am forced to be one to those who never even try to correct their ignorance... But where I come from, most kids who get into punk look further than the popular 80's stuff, and the bands that horribly generalize entire subgenres (like the Exploited did to UK82)...

    -BSD

    Anonymous (January 23, 2004)

Hahahahhaha. I've seen all of those bands once, some twice...

And I liked your use of ageism... I know 11 year olds who know more about music than you.

    haha, sorry janelle...my bad

    boba_fett (January 22, 2004)

i can dig this, it ain't bad.

but there's no use arguing with BSD, cause he'll always win.

and is he really 16? if so, he knows a shit load about music for a 16 year old.

    Anonymous (January 22, 2004)

    Local-Felons fucking SUCKS

What a bunch of fuckin fags

    Anonymous (January 22, 2004)

You mistake my excitement for hostility! I'm just overjoyed that they're together, putting out records and putting on amazing performances!!!!
    With love
    Janelle

    Anonymous (January 22, 2004)

janelle- notice i used the term "were". that means that when they formed their band and decided to name it the skeptics, the old skeptix were broken up. no need to get hostile.

    Anonymous (January 22, 2004)

THAT GUY makes a valid point BSD. You do know a lot about your music, but that is far from you being some sort of "expert".

The funny thing is, its people like you that actually drive kids to liking bands like Good Charlotte, Simple Plan and so on. Its the obnoxious sense of elitism, that if you don't know that "Blah Blah Blah" came before "Dippity-Doo" and that "Hoogity-Boogity" is actually this style, and not that, that a person doesn't know shit.

Instead of bitching about no one knowing anything about the genres you like, how about you do something to maybe get kids to actually give these bands/styles a chance?

Whatever, Anonymous, you can't even sign in an account. How do I sound needy ? When did I say he was stupid ?

    THAT GUY

    Anonymous (January 22, 2004)

whatever. now YOU sound stupid - don't prove how smart YOU are, that guy. It comes off as needy.

    ThatotherGuy (January 22, 2004)

You just gotta bring my name up huh BSD ? You couldn't let it go that I don't like your old school music ? I may have mislabeled it, but I never attacked it, I attacked you. I'm sorry I can't distinguish between Crust, Old School, 77 Style, UK82, and all that stuff. But in there is NO WAY you can, at the age of 16 tell me you know more than me, and I need to learn. You may know more about a little area, but I have a greater knowledge of many things. The least of which being "Punk Rock". I've probably seen more bands than you could ever imagine, and in very genres. Everyone from Unwritten Law to Bad Religion, from No Use For A Name to Mates of State, from Rise Against to Reel Big Fish. And I can school you on pretty much all of that music. Try not to be a little elitist at 16, no one thinks you're cooler. It comes off as sophmoric and immature.

Actually, you kind of remind me of this little grouop of "punks" when I was in high school. There were about 4 of them, and they thought they were so much better for liking Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, UK Subs, Sex Pistols and all that shit, than me and my friends who were into Millencolin, Lagwagon, Green Day, Rancid, Smoking Popes, and those types of bands. You need to get over that whole "it's older, it's better" mentality. It's not always true, and most bands today aren't derivative in the copying sense, they have taken quite a bit of inspiration from said bands. Have you even seen any of those bands ? Didn't think so. That's cause they all broke up years ago. Of the ones still around, I've seen the Misfits, Dead Kennedys, TSOL, Bad Religion, Social Distortion, Agnostic Front and a few others. Don't tell me you know shit.

    THAT GUY

WELL guess what?! THE SKEPTIX ARE BACK WITH A VENGEANCE!

Check out the (somewhat) new record HATE AND FEAR!

    Anonymous (January 21, 2004)

these guys are well aware that there is already a band called the skeptix, but were under the impression that they had broken up. now they just dont care. but they do put on a fantastic live performance. one thing i can say for this site...no one's said how much they want tony (the lead singer). thats refreshing.

I wear tight pants does this mean BSD is gonna beat me up? ;(

P.s. Janelle is still my ideal woman.

    Anonymous (January 20, 2004)

The (non UK, non skeptix with an X) Skeptics are a really hardworking band, and fun to see live. No, they're not too original, but they're way better than a lot of the crap that fills VFWs and random halls in MA.

    ashton (January 20, 2004)

people here won't understand unless you say: It's like if jamisonparker would change their name to bigwig, or propaghandi, or strike anywhere, or any band that 90% of this site think is tits now.

    Anonymous (January 20, 2004)

And it goes for all you ignorant little cunts on this site:

You are intimidated by the fact that Janelle and I probably know a million more things about music than you, so your recourse to defend this status-quo pop garbage is willful ignorance.

Yeah, like THAT GUY's claim that the Casualties are "77 punk" like the Subhumans, who are crusty... Just get a fucking clue. Hell, the least you could do before commenting is spend a day surfing around AllMusic.com before accusing people who know about punks of being elitists...

Or fashion punks. You bet your ass I take the piss on fashion punks, but not because I fear them (like sXe hardcore jocks), but because I don't like trite nostalgic clothing.

    -BSD

Your venom is spawned by the fact that you're ignorant and try to make for it by doubling your immaturity.

    Let me clarify, Mr. Ifyoulikeoldpunkyoureanelitist:

It's like if I had an emo band called G.B.H..

    -BSD

    Icapped2pac (January 20, 2004)

Let me clarify: I don't think much of this band either, therefore my venom is not spwaned by a love for their music, which is yawn-worthy.
