Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

What the fuck is punk rock anyway? Out of nowhere last year, Epitaph embraced indie-hip-hop like it was the cure to SARS. Not only did they sign a distribution deal with Rhymesayers Entertainment, they also signed whom some have called “the poster boy of emo-rap,” Sage Francis. I don’t believe in any of the hype surrounding the emo-rap messiahs because of the bullshit label, I believe in the hype surrounding them because they are just too goddamn good to ignore. It seems that the most original and fresh music is coming out of underground hip hop labels, and not the most often considered former pioneers in the punk rock movement labels (ie: Fat Wreck Chords.)

Atmosphere released their debut album on Epitaph/Rhyme Sayers Entertainment last year with “Seven’s Travels.” Sean Daley (alias Slug) takes the listener through a campfire sitting worth of different life lessons, tour stories, and just plain off the wall drunken tales. The album starts off with where GodLovesUgly left off, not daring to graze much off of the formula that Ant has provided for Slug for a decade. Trying To Find A Balance, the first video and single off the album starts with a fist and ends with a weak finger point. Lines like, “Yeah, I’ve got some last words, fuck all y’all! Stop writin’ raps and go play volleyball!” spoil the song regardless of Slug’s delivery.

The album bounces everywhere, from dark depressing lyrics to catchy pop-infused choruses. He has a track with his albino Rhymesayers’ colleague Brother Ali which is supported by weak beats from Ant. However, it’d be wrong to say that this album lacks all good. National Disgrace as well as the secret track after Always Coming Back Home To You (Say Shhhh!) are standout performances which seem to brush upon the good old Slug-fucked up pothead from Minnesota just rapping for the hell of it, instead of the Slug that seems to be displayed on the rest of this record (Los Angeles has fucked me up-style-Slug).

There was a time when Slug couldn’t be touched by anyone, his rhymes, beats, and style was unheard of and original. It’s a shame that while growing so much as an artist; he has left behind the roots and originality that we fell in love with him for. Slug, I think it’s time for us to see other people.

    My Score:

Yo yo, 139 and Lennox is the Danger Zone.... Yo Ramo, good to see you know what's up on the Gang Starr tip, MOT is only slightly ahead of HTE in my book. Both are incredible.... And Sickbwoy, I used to think Bumpy Knucks was the shit too, until the Konexxion LP he just put out. It was almost complete garbage, save for the Premo track and a couple others. He's made plenty of wack shit too before Gang Starr put him back on the map. His verse on "The Militia" is one of the best bragadaccio rhymes in hip-hop history, though. He fuckin' KILLED it.

And to the rest of you readers, as a die-hard fan of true-school hip-hop, I'm very impressed to see so much intelligent discussion of it. I would welcome more reviews of hip-hop albums, especially since there isn't really a user-interactive hip-hop site like this one, not that I've found at least. Maybe there could be a seperate section for them, to keep these fucking crybabies silent. It's so sad that they have nothing better to do than click on a link for a review that THEY APPARENTLY NEVER WANTED TO READ IN THE FIRST PLACE. Fuckin douchewallas.

So since there's a review of an Atmosphere album on www.punknews.org, I'm assuming that you will post reviews by Wu-tang Clan, Outkast, Eminem, A Tribe Called Quest, etc.?
I like Atmosphere, and the others I mentioned, but simply because this album was put out by Epitaph, doesn't mean it should be on here.

If you ask me.. those lyrics you put up are the same as all rap. Just a bunch of chest thumping. While Slug does that once in a while, he just doesn't dwell on it as much as all of the other stuff out there. While some of his Rhymesayers mates are close.. i still don't think anyone is as poignant as Slug.

If you want people to listen to music similar to Atmosphere without them bitching about it not being punk, review some Lifter Puller. Or you bitches should just listen to Lifter Puller. "Soft Rock" is the best purchase your dumb asses could make. Get on that shit, now. Plus, Slug makes frequent cameos on and references to their shit. Craig Finn's got better phrasing, anyways.

Are you dancing like you're staggering drunk? Or are you drinking like you're trying to dance?

Atmosphere's good, though. And by the way, this site is called "Punknews.org" not "Punkreviews.org." If they put up a review of something that's not punk, they didn't break the fragile social construct that you believed you had coming into this website. So eat it, babies.

I should start by saying; I abhore rap. Or at least I did until I was exposed to Atmosphere/Slug. One could get me to listen to The Roots due to them playing their own instruments, and various songs which held a slight inkling of the amounts of intelligence found on albums by the likes of KRS-1. I was just really sick of the repetitive gangster with nothing to say styles which had been the norm in rap, and therefore had no respect for the entire genre. Then, I was introduced to what has recently become termed "emo-rap", because of the open honesty with which these artists are expressing themselves. Sure, maybe they're not expressing some really thought provoking political feelings, but a far too large percent of current punk music also has nothing to say politically.
Compared to previous albums by Slug, this one is by far the worst, in my humble opinion. But compared to what else is out there, it is by far the best. [7, God Loves Ugly, and my personal favorite Overcast are sooo much better].

This album is shit compared to the entire Lucy Ford ep collection. I love that cd, with all my heart, and still listen to it on a regular basis. This album has a lot of bad filler songs that I skip over to get to the good songs. I don't skip any tracks on the Lucy Ford EP collection cd.

    My Score:

First off, for those who don't know, Atmosphere was being courted around by all major labels to sign to them. He despised them since they weren't in line with his ethics and...who did he choose? Epitaph. Good choice.

I totally disagree that there are only a small few bright moments on the album. Although it took me at least five listens through Slug's style on Seven's Travels, I find myself reluctant to even listen to Godlovesugly. There are so many great songs (lyrically especially) that carry the momentum throughout the entire album, as opposed to Godlovesugly which tapered off with the exception of Modern Man's Hustle.
My opinion of the good points:
Trying To Find A Balance - Great single, a little weak in the lyrics. But nonetheless it starts the momentum as it should following the intro (History).
Bird Sings Why The Caged I Know - I had mixed feelings about this song for at least a month, but after you open up to the emotion unleashed in the song it grows on you. 'My beautiful bird has gone away...' just repeats in your head and is a perfect ending with one vocal screaming while the others rhythmically support it calmly.
The Keys of Life vs. 15 Minutes of Fame - Ant managed to create an awesome instrumental layer that enhances and supports Slug's ability creating one of the strongest (in my opinion again) songs on the album. If Ant had done any less, it'd still be great.
Lifter Puller - My favorite. Once again half attributed to Ant's work at laying the foundation for Slug; 'You don't know me, you just love me.' Complete with the vinyl scratches. The guitar work carries the beat throughout the piece. Slug weaves such a great tale atop this.
National Disgrace - Slug's lyrics shine through on this criticism of politics and popularity.
Always Coming Back Home To You - The guitar work compliments the beats perfectly while Slug's reminiscent lyrics give a nice icing on the cake. It would've been the perfect ending if that wasn't stolen by the extra track-
Say Shhh - The best track ever created for their hometown (or state, in this matter). The lyrics evoke positive (or negative) aspects of Minnesota while sticking close to home 'and this is where you wanna raise your kids' and 'parks and zoos and things to do with my son.' Slug's lyrics show how much he cares and loves Minnesota/Minneapolis with pride.

If you don't open your mind to a release from a familiar artist, your expectations are going to be way to high for them to achieve satisfaction. That's what it seems happened to this reviewer.

Yea. He's pretty funny, I'll admit that. (and morbid, hence his moniker).

The Lucy Ford E.P.s will always be my favorite release. It was a pinnacle for Slug's rhymes and Ant's beats. Overcast rules, and whomever posted below, about the "it's the," the song you're looking for is Scapegoat, and it features some of the most intellignet, witty rhymes I've ever heard in a song. God Loves Ugly is definately not a good album. I haven't heard this CD yet. This score is for Lucy Ford E.P.s.

suffers from the same inconsistency as godlovesugly (probably to an even greater degree), but the great songs on here (cats van bags, trying to find a balance, always coming home to you/say shhhh) are so freaking great that i can't hate the album. the truth is, i play it a lot and just skip the filler. i think they've been going downhill since lucy ford, but they can still write great songs and i still have love for them. and i'm seeing them tomorrow.

I actually really like this album from start to finish. There are some weak tracks, but taken as a whole it's a great "road" album - I mean, I feel like I'm going someplace when I listen to it. Also, some of the songs really stand out as exceptional (at least in my book). Regardless - this may be the best hip hop album since 'Blazing Arrow.'

Also: criticize Epitaph if you will, but remixed and bargain priced Bad Religion classics is a damn good idea.

you know, people bashed me for my movielife review, and i understand. i mixed up the order of albums, but at least i -acknowledged- that they were made. you, mr. reviewer, failed to realize that this isn't their debut album -- they released two albums on Rhymesayers before this one. One in 1997, and the other in 2002. In 2000, a collection of their EP's was also released. Atmosphere are not new to the hip-hop scene, but you obviously are. This album might not be the greatest way of showing their talents, but it's still pretty good. "God Loves Ugly" is a great place to start if you're just getting into hip-hop -- and just because this group signed to Epitaph doesn't mean anything. Music is music. Shut up, or else know your shit.

Emo-rap? That term is so laughable.. Atmosphere is ok, but if you haven't picked up Non-Prophets yet, I suggest you do. Sage and Joe Beats can do no wrong..
And I can't really stand Necro. His delivery sucks, but his production isn't too bad. I prefer his brother Ill Bill and the rest of Non-Phixion. Immortal Technique is badass too.
