Tuesday night in Detroit. Definitely time for some rock and roll. St. Andrews Hall is a pretty nice venue- and it was pretty damn packed for this show. I haven't been to a show that was this filled up in a long time. Anyway, here's my take on the bands:

First off was Fordirelifesake, a band native to Detroit. They were a last minute addition to the bill, so I think a lot of kids were surprised to see them there. At any rate, this was my second time seeing them, though I'm not all that familiar with them. If you don't know their sound, I'd describe it as really fast metallic hardcore with occasional singing, many breakdowns, etc. So they came on and rocked- tons of energy and the crowd got into it. I know that they opened with "We Burn in Our Own Comfort"- after that I was slightly lost but a great set nevertheless. 8/10

Next up was the Kinison, and the crowd, for the most part, hated them. Their music and stage presence was not winning over any hardcore fans. To their credit, they played through the middle finger signs and their singer had a lot of energy, so they get some points for that. However, their songs were just kind of boring, I was glad when they finally got off the stage. 4/10

After a quick set up, Murder by Death took the stage. This is another band that I'm not too familiar with, but I knew their style and I was worried that the crowd would not take well to them. However, the response was very positive, and I was completely won over by the end of their set, as well. Their music is hard to explain, but I can say that it involves a cello and a keyboard and evilness. A slight comparison could be made to Cursive, but the 2 bands take completely different roads with their music. Overall, Murder by Death kept the interest level high for the entire set, a thing that many bands are not capable of. Check this band out, seriously. 8.5/10

Next up was The Bled, the band that I was most excited to see. They came out and instantly the crowd was in a frenzy, with a few different mosh pits forming. They opened with "Spitshine Sonata", which got the kids singing. They tore through most of their full length with great precision, though the singer's voice seemed to be a little shot. By the end of the set I was feeling slightly beaten up, and they closed with the 1-2 punch of "Red Wedding" and finally "Dale Earnhardt's Seatbelt". This was really one of the best metalcore bands I've ever seen live; the breakdowns and sing-a-longs were just that much more exciting in person. Overall, I can only say that The Bled is fucking sweet. 9/10

After a nice short wait, the headliners, Poison the Well, took the stage, blasting into a track off of "You Come Before You". Immediately I could hear that something was not right with the sound. They weren't loud enough, first of all, but the vocals were too prevalent over everything else, as were the drums. The guitars did not feel punishing and loud and all those things that hardcore guitars should sound like. Also, most of the songs were from "You Come Before You", though they did throw in "Artists Rendering of Me" and "Botchla", among others. But much to the crowd's dismay, they closed with "Ghostchant" and didn't play "Nerdy". Their entire set left me wanting more, especially since I saw them on the Take Action tour this summer and that was a much better showing. Still, there were some good moments, and overall it was a positive, though somewhat flawed set. 7/10

Definitely go see this tour when it rolls through your skank ass town. I had a great time.

emocore, noisecore, grindcore, metalcore, screamo....who gives a fuck?? Don't catalogue bands, or people either for that matter. This site is filled with hypocrisy.

I agree, Every Time I die is better than Poison the Well. Also, I think Fordirelifesake has breakdowns. I mean, they're not huge like PTW breakdowns, but the tempo goes to half speed and and its way less crazy, but more crushing...they do that.

The singer for The Kinison looks like a fetus.

Poison the Well isn't that good EVERY TIME I DIE is better than all of these sucky lame ass emocore bands

I saw this show in Richmond last week. Poison the Well was good, but did seem to be a bit detached from the crowd. Murder by Death was just plain amazing, and the Bled were ok, although I couldn't really see them from where I was standing at the time. And the Kinison, well the only thing good about them was that their lead singer had half of a mullet...

Murder By Death is fucking awful.
Poison The Well is fucking awful, though not as bad as Murder By Death.
The Bled is the worst, though not as bad New Kids On The Block.

Music sucks dick today.

"Somehow though, having to get up at 6 every morning (and be useful) for work left me no chance."

Oh come on now...I get up at 5:15 every morning and go to school, work, and then more school, and I still make it to weekday shows. Not that I don't prefer weekend ones, but still.

only saw the bled the ptw when i attended this show in pomona, ca at the glasshouse. The bled was alright, I honestly wasnt blown away, the hype around these parts is nuts, but they just didnt do it for me. As for ptw they seem to be worse and worse everytime i see them. since 2000 i have caught them about 7 times, first time with candiria and it was amazing, supporting opposite of december, but since they grow weaker. at the glasshouse they didnt seem to be into it at all. Jeff is growing lazy on vocals.. and doesnt even bother getting into the crowd anymore. for a band like that to bring the energy they should in a live performance is very dissapointing.

I caught this tour in Pittsburgh. The Kinison's lead singer was really drunk and obnoxious, but the music wasn't too bad. MBD was amazing; please check these guys out, because they actually have an original sound. I completely agree with the reviewer on The Bled - they're insane. PTW was really tight and the sound quality was superb too. I was also disappointed by the omission of Nerdy from the setlist, as well as Sticks and Stones, but they hit all the good stuff on YCBY, so it was cool. One of the best shows I've been to in awhile.

t-rav (February 25, 2004)

Poison the well...? I can do nothing but shake my head in disappointment.

Anonymous (February 25, 2004)

here is what they have to talk about at emotionalpunk.com.....

"Recently, it was the anniversary of Beatlemania in the U.S. so I thought at first, that 40 years later, no one has ever been close to that spot that they've taken in music history. Then I started thinking even more about it, and my opinion is that there's been two bands that came pretty close to the Beatles, and one of them is a threat to them as being the ultimate band. The point of this is that I want people's opinions about it. Do you think someone has been close to be as good as the Beatles?

The two bands I have in mind are The Beach Boys and Radiohead. Comment. "

radiohead like the beatles? hahahaha

Anonymous (February 25, 2004)

the good ol' days is when Alex from MBD could light his cymbals on fire and vincet could breath fire on stage.

fuck Great White

Anonymous (February 24, 2004)

i don't see how you could criticize PTW for not playing "nerdy" (last, or at all) -- imagine closing with the SAME FUCKING SONG night after night after night. every time i see them, they play that last, and even i get sick of it after seeing them 4 times.

i like the song, but "opposite of december" has a number of far better songs.

Anonymous (February 24, 2004)

the last time i saw poison the well they had a flawed sound as well, it wasnt them it was whoever was mixing. i wrote a review of it on here. but PTW needs to find someone who can evenly balance their sound, especially since they are on a major label.

thebouncingsoul (February 24, 2004)

this score is for murder by death

Anonymous (February 24, 2004)

Fordirelifesake is one of the fucking sweetest bands in metalcore today.

Technical as hell. Awesome melodies.

Anonymous (February 24, 2004)

fordirelifesake fucking owns....that is all.

InSpaceWithAKnife (February 24, 2004)

Oh, by the way before anyone corrects my grammar, I would just like to fix that sentence.

(I would definitely like to see The Bled and Murder By Death, but then again who doesn't.)

Eh, who cares i probably screwed that up anyway.

InSpaceWithAKnife (February 24, 2004)

Definetely would like to see The Bled and Murder By Death, but then again who doesnt.

Icapped2pac (February 24, 2004)

You son of a bitch, I wanted to go to this show bad. Somehow though, having to get up at 6 every morning (and be useful) for work left me no chance. I don't give a flying fuck about any of the other bands, because I knew The Bled would knock dicks in the dirt (or hardwood). Hopefully they come back on a weekend next time, or I develop a coke/no sleep lifestyle.

Anonymous (February 24, 2004)

murder by death is amazing

Anonymous (February 24, 2004)

that was supposed to be an arrow

Anonymous (February 24, 2004)

Ok, fuck the Opposite of December, its a bland boring album. The drumming is fucking amazing but thats about it, I think they have grown leaps and bounds with You Come Before You (Tear From the Red grew on me as well). They actually sound different from the other screamy-singy bands out there right now, a little more sinister, OOD bores the shit out of me, and espectially "nerdy", I don't ever want to hear that fucking song again.

Anonymous (February 24, 2004)

The setlist for this poison the well tour has been weird. In Chicago they played almost all of You Come Before You, Bochala, 3 songs off Opposite of December none of which were "nerdy" or artists rendering of...". And they dont seem like they have a set list..its just like they play songs. Its odd.

musical-monkey (February 24, 2004)

fordirelifesake rocks

Anonymous (February 24, 2004)

How the hell did PTW not play Nerdy?

Anonymous (February 24, 2004)

murder by death are awe-inspiring.

that is if you like music.

inagreendase (February 24, 2004)

Yes, the Bled is plenty good.

WorryRock (February 24, 2004)

murder by death is overrated. people just love them because they have a girl celloist. they didnt do anything for me

rhythm (February 24, 2004)

rhythm (February 24, 2004)

so um, is the bled any good?

Anonymous (February 24, 2004)

they did play nerdy here in LA.
jeff is probably one of the best scream singers out there now.

and murder by death was amazing.

maverick (February 24, 2004)

Poison The Well didn't play "Nerdy?"

Well, there goes the only reason to ever see them live.
