The first Saves the Day record, Can't Slow Down sounded an awful lot like Lifetime. Most critics would use that in a derogatory manner. But I'm not a critic. I'm a fan. Lifetime is one of the greatest hardcore or punk or whatever bands to grace this planet. So I'm biased. For me to say something sounds like Lifetime is a high compliment. However (you knew it was coming), you're not going to make a name for yourself by trying to sound like a scene defining band. So while I found Can't Slow Down listenable, it quickly ended up in a drawer on my desk. It followed the Lifetime formula too closely, and that's no fun. I want surprises, after all. Thankfully, with Through Being Cool, the band has nearly found themselves. It's still a little derivative. One of the better tracks, Rocks Tonic Juice Magic sounds almost identical to Samiam's track, Capsized from their Clumsy album. However, the rest of the album seems to be more in line with where I hope to see the band moving in the next while. It's good, simple pop-punk, with some hard edges, and, to their credit, they don't sound like anything on Fat, which is a hard thing for a pop-punk band to do. This isn't a mediocre album. It's actually a very good one, but mostly because it shows the potential and talent that will hopefully make Saves the Day into a classic to rival their idols. This is seriously the greatest album. Ever. I agree with the comment below, this is pure pop-punk, and one of the best realizations of the genre to date. In the past few years, I can't think of a single true "pop-punk" album that tops this one. Well this is not really what i thought it would be. This cd is more pop punk than emo. I think they are just called a emo band. they just get that label because of there love songs and catche lyrics. But most people would say there pop punk and i agree. The lyrics are good they dont just talk about girls there are other toics such as trying to be cool and being a dork but those topics are somewhat close to lyrics about not being able to get girls because of not being a jock or whatever. The songs are average length 2 to 3 minutes long not to short and not to long. The singing is good and there are some fast parts close to speed of NOFX but only for a short time this cd reminds of a more talented bilnk-182 minus the druming. all in all it is a good cd but you wouldnt like it if you are over 17 or if you were a popular jock or pretty boy because the lyrics probally would not be your taste because your probally a fucking meat head............. fuck off Ok here's what happend. I was at the cd shop and had three cd's in my hand. Silverstein, Reggie and the Full Effect, and Saves the Day. I only had like 15$ so I couldnt buy more than one. So i decided to go with Saves the Day. Bad choice. In response to: devo's through being cool is much better. the album title is from a hidden jawbreaker song on the Dear You cd. one of the lyrics is "i'm through being cool". so happens saves the day took that lyric and made it into their album title, also why through being cool is in quotations. because they took it from jawbreaker. cool record but definitly no killer record i like bands that rip off lifetime and their contemporaries, i like this album and "can't slow down" as well why does stuff like this exist? Lifetime like whoa... Good Lyrics, Good Music, Good guys= Great Band by this album its there best one. good music, but i can't stand chris' voice. i mean 2-3 songs i can deal, but the whole fucking album of whiny shit?? where's the gun? great lyrics and vocals. great everything! i saw them on the pop disaster tour and the live show left a little to be desired. i bet they are good in a club though. you vandal fucking rocks. saves the day kicks ass, i just love nightingale and at your funeral!!and all you people saying they are lame, go to hell! you vandal rocks. good cd. Ok, this is late coming I know but, hey, I'm new to this site. I love Through Being Cool. I think it's an excellent album. However, I do think it takes a little while to warm up to it. The first time I heard it I thought it was mediocre, the second time good, and now I love it. Oh, and, they don't sound at all like ANFG, not at all. STD is one of my favorite bands, and for everyone posting here saying they suck, If you don't like them, don't listen to them. I really enjoy this album. But the song "through being cool" is the worst song I've heard in years. Well, not "the" worst, but I hate it with a passion(which, by chance, is exactly what that song lacks). The rest of the album is very good though. Rock on. I would have to agree with the guy below me but i would also say NFG and STD defienetely sound different. whose the idiot who said "saves the day" is like "new found glory" but harder? What the hell are you talking about. Neither band is hard at all, just pop-punk. Don't get me wrong I like both bands, but to say one is harder than the other is a truly stupid statement. Damn Aubin, you sound like a prophet now. After Stay What You Are, I'm sure a lot of people will agree that STD has realized their potential. This is for SMstealthisrecordshldrock, I really don't care if you guys like them or not, personally i really like everything that they have done and i have all four of their cds, including Stay What You Are, and i like them all. I'm just responding to SMstealthisrecordshldrock here: uhm... dude, re-read the review. I said: "The first Saves the Day record, Can't Slow Down sounded an awful lot like Lifetime" That sentence implies that "Can't Slow Down" was their first record. This review is for their second album, hence there is nothing wrong with the review. :) First of all this is not Saves the Day's first album they have another one with a cover of a punk child in the front. The first Saves the Day album is not called "Through being cool" that is their second release their first release is called "Can't Slow Down" which is an all hardcore album, no slow songs.... So Saves the Day didn't start pop/punk they started with HARDCORE and HARDCORE only then they change so I want to correct the person who wrote the review. NOTE* The album came out in Equal Vision records if anyone cares for it. this is for the dumbshit who said they should be "through playing music"...what fuckin band are you in. At first, I liked the album. Then I got bored with it and put it away (I burn tons of CDs, this was one of them) I found it on my spindle and put it in. I don't like Saves The Day. Saves The Day should be "Through Playing Music" i think 'through being lame' comes out next year, with their new single, 'sell this record, i'm off to the bank'.- fathead this is so rad. Sell My Old Clothes Im Off to Heaven was my fav STD song but Holly Hox Forget Me Nots is just as good. So are songs like Rock Tonic Juice Magic. Buy it, they are like New Found Glory but harder. This is my favorite band and it doesnt seem to change this album is just AWESOME! and i cant wait till there new one comes out! When is Trough being Lame comin out? i dig this album. with all respects to aubin, im going to have to disagree with him. THis cd is amazing. I saw them live with face to face and instantly became a fan. Their heart felt lyrics blow me away. |
