Reviews

A lot of people last year spoke of how it was a great year for music, and while I enjoyed Transatlanticism and Give Up as much as the next music geek, I did find myself wondering where all the actual punk was. Maybe it was a great year for indie rock and hardcore, but despite strong showings from The Lawrence Arms, Against Me! and others, it felt less like a punk rock year.

2004 is shaping up to be the year that the punk comes roaring back. In the next few months, we can expect records from Bad Religion, Social Distortion, and Green Day. But before that, the long awaited return of a personal favourite of mine: the Descendents.

There are few bands that really get to me like the Descendents; while many of their peers considered loftier matters like politics and rebellion, few of them were as consistently fun as the Descendents. Sure, songs about love and bitterness, coffee and being a nerd aren't high brow enough to impress the folks at Punk Planet and Pitchfork but when you're a teenager, as much as you'd like to pretend that you're concerned with new economic paradigms, CIA-sponsored coups and the political unfairness of the estate tax, somehow songs about girls, food and doing dumb things with your friends seemed more immediate.

Sure, we can speak at length about the kind of things that end up in bios, Bill Stevenson played in Black Flag, and All, for example. We can talk at length about how Milo is has a PhD in biochemistry now and is married with kids. But really, how much does that matter? This is a Descendents record, and necessarily eschews the need for lengthy exposition and clever concept reviews.

Their first release since 1996s Everything Sucks on Epitaph, Cool To Be You has it's mature side, handling topics like the loss of an estranged relative (the heartfelt “One More Day”), and a lyrically fantastic track about American pride and shame (‘Merican). Despite that, they haven't lost the childish, self-depreciating streak that is almost impossible to find anything but endearing and sympathetic. “Mass Nerder” talks about being ostracized in high school, while “Dog and Pony Show” concerns itself with singles bars and “Blast Off!” represents an eloquent ode to flatulence. As always, the song writing seems perfectly democratic, with each member contributing excellent tracks.

Musically, the band hasn't changed drastically since 1982's Milo Goes to College;1 they're still focused on somewhat unorthodox melodies, anchored by an incredibly tight rhythm section and some guitar pyrotechnics. The band is clearly tighter and more comfortable with strong melodies, but with the exception of the omission of sub-30 second goof offs like “Coffee Mug” and “Weiner schnitzel”, there is little that will alienate old fans. The production, by way of Stevenson (who has been producing one excellent sounding record after another at his Blasting Room studio) is the best yet, with every instrument clear and not one dominating. The common description of “pop-hardcore” is still undisputed.

Is this the best Descendents record yet? Perhaps not... Everything Sucks is definitely the most accessible, Milo Goes to College their most defining moment, but the truth is the Descendents don't need to change the world of music with Cool to Be You. They already did in 1981. What they have produced is an outstanding melodic record; a welcome maturity that likely coincides with the maturity of their audience, and just solid, memorable songs.

    My Score:

This album, like all the descendents/all material is awesome! they are my favourite band, however it still baffles me when people credit them with "inventing pop_punk" they did not invent pop punk. The Ramones, The Buzzcocks and i think probablt the Damned were all doing it before the Descendents, especially if you consider that their early efforts "bonus fat" and the majority of "college" ain't exactly the most melodic in their catalogue. It seems to me that they did not really emerge as a pop punk band until "grow up" which did not come out until 1985. Yes yes i know there are a few poppy songs on college, but the majority of that album is hard core, or straight up punk rock. Oh yeah, forgot to mention the Dickies too. Come on people, do your research!

    My Score:

Despite what some elitist pricks might say, this album is fucking great. "Merican", "Mass Nerder" and "Maddie" are my personal stand-out tracks, but everyone I know who has the album picks different favourites. Here are some critiscisms made of the album and why they are stupid:-

    1) The album is too poppy: I don't know who was expecting a hardcore album from the band who invented pop-punk, but it wasn't gonna happen was it? "Everything Sucks" was a poppy album, the only difference being that they've got rid of some 30-second punk songs like "Coffee Mug" and "Eunuch Boy". Those songs were great, but I don't want re-written versions of them, they're good enough on their own. People who think this album is too poppy are usually too scared of letting their "punk-as-fuck" image be tarnished because they like a band who can write tunes.

    2) The album is too short: Go get the Circle Jerks' "Group Sex", which lasts something like 16 minutes and is one of the greatest punk albums ever.

    3) Milo Goes To College was a better album: Of course it was, dumbass. Did you expect the new one to be better? Can you imagine how bad the album would have been if the 40-year old members of the band tried to fake the teenage anger and passion of their first album? It'd be like your Dad starting a nu-metal band. What these people neglect to mention is that "Cool to be You" is a hundred times better than any other pop-punk album released since, um, the Descendents' last album, "Everything Sucks". And I think the new one matches that release for quality. Just be thankful that the Descendents didn't "do a Sex Pistols", by which I mean make an amazing debut album and then spend the rest of your life making money off reunion tours and auto-biographies.

Anyway, I think I have ranted for long enough. Go buy the album. And buy
    "Numb Nuts" by Snuff
"Return of the Village Idiots" by the Dead Pets, and
"Sing Loud, Sing Proud" by the Dropkick Murphy's while your at it.

On a somewhat related note: Just a warning, watch out when you place an order at DESCENDENTSonline.com!! I placed an order back in early February for a bunch of stuff including the Descendents "Hallraker" CD. Well after a week or so I got my stuff but I also got a note-card that said the Hallraker CD was on back-order and that they'd ship it to me whenever them get some back in stock.

Well it's now late March near April and I still haven't gotten that damn CD yet. I just sent them an angry email telling them to cancel the CD off of my order unless they know 100% for sure that they'd be able to ship the CD out to me within the next two days. I sent them an email about a week ago asking about the status of the CD but they never responded. It’s really starting to tick me off.

Living in the hills of Tennessee, I had to drive an 80-mile round trip to get this CD and it was well worth the drive.
This album is excellent. Smart, fun, really memorable songs and tight performance. At this period of my life, (I'm 23 and about to graduate from college), I'd have to say that I can relate on a personal level to almost every song on this album; this makes me feel good, depressed, lonely, and like I can conquer the world. It makes me fall in love with punk again and forget about the pointless, dead arguments. (I think "mitch" (who posted somewhere below me) said it best, concerning DK and political stuff, so if you haven't read his yet, scroll down.) Anyway, whether you're some bright-eyed suburban kid or a rural-living loner like me, it doesn't matter.
Music is music, and if makes you feel something or touches you in some way beyond something to impress others with, that's what it's all about.

The Descendents have always been kind of a hit-or-miss band. On every ALL/Descendents release I expect to hear probably two absolute gems mixed in with a lot of filler. Most bands that have that good-to-bad ratio I tend to just write off, but the exhiliration and fun I get from hearing "I'm the One" or "Suburban Home" or "Sour Grapes" makes something like "Enjoy!" instantly forgiveable. Liveage is one of the best live albums ever because it made me feel like I had been to the show. I first heard this band in 1987 and almost 20 years later their best stuff holds up. I haven't heard this one yet, but I'll take a halfassed Descendents cd with one or two classic on it over a consistent one by your favorite scarf-wearing tough-but-sensitive floor-staring screamers any day of the week.

mediocre album, after the ep i was looking forward to it but the album doesnt hold what the ep promised. perhaps some more songs will grow on me, but still, after everything sucks i expected something that tops it.
    - on another note, i saw ALL two years ago on the deconstruction tour, and i was looking forward to see them and i told a friend about them who knew "everything sucks" from the descendents. but what i saw at that show was horrible, they were by far the worst band on the bill, i dont know why they played in my eyes all the bad songs on their albums, the filler songs. it was almost ironic that they were best at the end playing "world on heroin" and a descendents song from "everything sucks". i wonder if that was on purpose, but at least during their show i had time to turn around and watch the half pipe.

That is probably the best single sentence ever written in a review on this site.

I get so tired of going to shows and watching bands 10 years younger than me spew rehashed political drivel they heard Michael Moore or Jello Biafra say and expect everyone to think they're revolutionary. While politics certainly play an important role in the world of punk music, they should never take the front seat over having a good fucking time, which is what ALL rock music should be. No one wants to put on a record and be made to feel inferior because they eat meat and don't any books put out by AK Press.

So kudos to the Descendents for keeping it real and showing everyone that, after 20 years, songs like "California Uber Alles" are slightly more difficult to pump your fist to than "Pep Talk" or "Clean Sheets".

It's been around but it wasn't the music that every trendhopping kid in high school was listening to until a year or two ago. It's one of the sadder trends because everyone who's just jumping on the bandwagon now is trying to act like they'll like it forever when it seems painfully obvious that next year or the year after, a lot of them will be moving on to whatever the next big thing in rock music is. Then the people who still appreciate indie/emo/hardcore/whateverthefuck will be the same ones who wouldn't make ignorant comments about how you "shouldn't be proud of being punk".

    good cd's i've picked up
1.lostprophets- i know there not punk, but this is as good as this type of music gets, its hoobastank if they were waaay better, mixed w/ some punk edge and afi like anthemy chorus's
2.the get up kids - i personally think this may be their best, tracks 1,2,5,6,7,10,11,12 are all outstanding and only 2 duds i think 8,9 are bad

3.1208-sure it sounds like sum41 mixed with pennywise but its a fun throwback cd that makes me miss the days of skate punk and having fun before screamo and emocore and shit. not top 10 material though

4.the new phantom planet is waaay better than their old album, its a bit garage/pretentious but a good listen

some old albums i picked up that kick ass are slightly stoopid and pepper, two sublime like bands, mixing hip hop dub reggae and such

    It was a good review.

But for everyone saying this will be a good year for punk?

What are exactly has or will be released that has been of excellence?

Circle takes a Square - possibily top 10 material
Bad Religion - good, because they always are....

I see nothing else since the beginining of 2004 worth getting, or from the look of the release schedule, nothing worth getting between now and early june.

the fall better be good, because so far this year is lousy.

My suggestion: Sujfan Stevens - Seven Swans

I'm not going to respond to too many comments, but I have to say something about how funny some of the nitpicks about the review are:

    • , I'm pretty sure there has never been a punk song about the estate tax
It was a joke. Sometimes in making a joke, you pick an extreme example, it's the juxtaposition of the absurd with the normal that tends to indicate humour.
    • wow it's a good thing Fat is here otherwise we wouldn't have had any punk rock last year because we all know they are the only label putting it out.
I used the word "others" to suggest that there might have been, you know, "others" but the two examples I gave were two of my favourites.
    • I bet this reviewer hangs out at the mall a lot.
Oh yes, totally dude. The mall is the shizzle.

"I know at least three local bands who have anti-emo songs and their whole persona as a band is being unabashedly proud of being punk rather than self deprecating about it or going emo."

why be proud of being "punk"? punk has been defined by the media and everything the supposed movement is against, yet you wave your stereotypical flag nonetheless. if you haven't grown out of 'being punk' by the age of 20, something is seriously wrong.

..merican is one of the best political songs, great witt. Yah and Descendents were a HUGE influence on all members of Blink182, so I don't see why you kids waste ur time posting insults. Post your thoughts about the CD, not other bands.

The only 'pop-punk' worth listening to. Unless you like Australians swearing too much.

The only popular punk band with every instrument easily recognisable. Does that make sense?

Bill, Milo, Karl and Steven actually all have there own unique way of playing their instrument. Combine that with the brilliant songwriting and you have the best CD this year.

    So far anyway.

My response to this album is like those said before. This album has done an unbelievable thing for me, in a tight package of nostalgia and fun it really rejuvenated me. I absolutely love this disc and am very greatful we got it.

Though, I must add... Are we still using seminal pop-punk bands to give advice to Blink 182? There are a world of newer bands that this seem so much more relevant to, most of who will state their influences as Blink over the Descendents. And to be truly topical, Blink have ditched the Descendents as an influence with their last album. Though it was a harmless comment and this message is kind of a superfluous one..

I own the Descendants/All live cd thing, and I got to say, when I put it on, it's real fun.

And while I don't think the Descendants are going to be a real thought-provoking experience (Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Tori Amos), I think they are really good at having fun, and hopefully it's not going to involve the politics of those other mediocre FAt Wreck bands.
