Fat Mike has a dream, that one day we will all be free of the oppression of George W. Bush. Rock Against Bush Vol 1 shows that he's not alone in his dream, and the caliber of talent on here assures that the basic message of "Bush is a twit" will be getting to thousands very soon.

The compilation is made up mostly of previously unreleased material, but luckily, very little of it falls into the "it's unreleased for a reason" category. Highlights are all over the thing, starting with None More Black's "Nothing To Do When You're Locked In A Vacancy." Kicking off the comp by kicking the listener in the ass, Jason Svechuk and company make me ask the question "why wasn't your full-length packed with songs as good as this?" Akaline Trio's "Warbrain" is a strong Skiba-sung effort, on par with the band's typical above-par compilation contributions. Against Me!'s electric version of "Sink, Florida, Sink" turns the song into a drunken singalong, increasing it's fun factor tenfold. The Get Up Kids' "Lion And The Lamb" is better than about every other song on Guilt Show. Rise Against shows that their sound hasn't changed at all since signing to a major, and leaves me anxiously awaiting their new material.

One of the biggest letdowns was the Rx Bandits' "Overcome (The Recapitulation)." Don't get me wrong, I love the song - I just thought the band would want to contribute a track specially written for the occasion. And while we're on the topic of ska, I should take time out to mention the new Descendents song - it's a ska song. Seriously.

The CD flows surprisingly well from band to band. considering some of the genre-hopping going on here [The Ataris into Pennywise into Denali? Somehow it works.]. The only big drawback is some of the songs are missing a lot in the production part, mainly the Offspring and Social Distortion tracks [both of these songs are over a decade old].

The DVD that accompanies the compilation is obviously very left-wing oriented, but presented in a way where it's not too radical. The inclusion of the anti-Bush commercials created through MoveOn.org is nice, as is the inclusion of a handful of music videos from Strike Anywhere and NOFX, among others. The liner notes are also presented in a way where it's intelligent without sounding stuffy - as it's written inside the CD: "This compilation is not about making a profit; it's about making a difference. It's not about 'let's be punk rock and hate the government'; it's about 'let's be punk rock and change the government.' It's not about who's a sellout or who's more punk; it's about uniting against a common enemy." It hasn't been said more succicently than that yet, and I commend Fat Mike and company for putting the effort they did into this release.

A worthy cause, a worthy purchase.

a good point about bush remaining in power:
better music is made when theres a crap president in office i mean look at the 80s in britain would we ahve such great bands like the exploited if it wasnt for mrs thatcher
would the clash be as good if we lived under a free government
i think not so for good music we need to be opressed
    tho is it worth it?

in the anti-flag song they complain about sweat shops but then the t shirt i got from their gig is a fruit of the loom which is a swaet shop.
now does that not seema bit contradictory?

In comparison to most of the other garbage on this album, Ministry are defiitely independent and great. DOA/ Jello's track is the only one that I REALLY like...but I've had that song for 13 years now, I'm eagerly awaiting The Melvins Jello project. Why not put one of those songs on this thing, along with other AT bands. This comp needed more violent protest anthems to it, it's just too nice....it's like saying "hehehe we don't like you bush hehehe" when we should be saying...."We want your head on stick and to rape your children"...it's not literal...but it gets the disered attention and effect that it needs. This is just (mostly) a bunch of pop bands and alt rock bands contributing songs....with a few punk rock guys thrown in for measure. I do however apprecciate the effort andf all bands even the shitty ones on this comp get my respect for atleast trying. Future ideas for an anti-bush comp- get Ice T & Body count, Henry Rollins and whatever new band is backing him, Jello, Amen, F Minus, Paint It Black, or Black Cross to contribute, their names arent as money making but they are way more respectable and ball busting.

    My Score:

I was just alerted to the garbage on this site by some Ministry fans. Listen, people, Ministry is not a mainstream band. They never sold millions of records. Also, they are pioneers of a genre of music called Industrial rock. The industrial genre is essentially what came after punk in the 70's when punk bands sold out and became commerical. Industrial was a combination of electronics and "found sounds" or samples. It was extremely confrontational anti-music that was first started by the group, Throbbing Gristle. Other groups followed Throbbing Gristle's lead such as SPK, Einsturzende Neubauten, and Skinny Puppy. In the mid-80's Ministry came along and combined elements of Industrial music with rock to create the industrial rock sub-genre. They were, in fact, very influential, whether you like thier music or not. If Ministy would have never come along there are a lot of bands that wouldn't even exist today. Oh yeah, and they were influential before LARD even came out with a CD so saying it's just because he met Jello Biafra is pretty silly. Listen, people, this album is fighting for a very important cause and I feel that's a hell of a lot more important than how you feel about a band on the CD or what genre this CD is supposed to be about. It's Called Rock Against Bush and Ministry is considered a rock band. Also, if you check out Punk Voter there are plenty of other bands on there that aren't punk. I support their efforts and if they want to get bands from other genres to work with them then more power to them. They need all of the help they can get to spread the word.

Shouts to Rise Against, NMB, Strike Anywhere (Even though not a new song there one fucking good band) and strung out who kept the album half decent.

Good cause. However, I'm not a fan of most of these bands except for Ministry and Jello Biafra(Dead Kennedys). The Ministry track rocks! One of their best tracks in years! The version of No W found on the album is an exclusive version of the song. A different one will be on their new album, Houses Of The Molé. The album is worth a purchase for that exclusive song alone. Ministry is in a league of their own and these other pop punk bands can't compete. Take that poser punks!

Wicked comp....not too sure about New FOund Glory track? aggreeance with the "sticks out like a sore thumb" comment....can't knock them for putting the effort forth tho....Fat Mike must see something in them (just not sure what,..?)
Highlights are definitely Strike Anywhere and Authority Zero's contributions....and the new Rise Against track, who are definitely one of my fav. bands, and have been eager to see what their sound is since being signed to Dreamworks......oh yes, and The Descendents track is great (of course, duh, its The Descendents...) and definitely NOT ska....
Oh yes, and whoever asked about who's gonna be on Vol. 2 mentioned Propagandhi......so i guess they were asleep when that whole Fat Mike/Propagandhi controversy went on? Their political views kinda clashed on this one, dealing with a particular track that Propagandhi wanted to put on the comp., so then ended up being offered a spot on Vol. 2, (along with other amazing bands like The Lawrence Arms, etc) but sadly ended up declining. Meh, u cant win 'em all Fat Mike...

"

I have a few problems with this. If you mean "best system" as in "best system to get rich in and potentially have a very high standard of living" then I agree. It is harder to do so now though, 100 years ago, yea, it was pretty amazing, guys like andrew carnegie could come over to america, be poor as shit and then turn into the equivelent today of a billionair, and it still happens every now and then. However, the way the system is set now is that you pretty much have to be born into wealth. Their is very little upward mobility anymore. While people in Canada don't have as good of doctors and the ability to get as rich, they do however have socialized medicine, i believe this is an improvment over our system. Many other countries celebrate more freedoms than we do also, like sweden, denmark etc. Also in terms of education our country is pretty pathetic. We do not put much stock in our teachers, we pay them shit and then complain they get paid too much, whereas in Japan, teachers are held in the same esteem as doctors. I think were like 20th in education, meaning although we are the most powerful nation in terms of money nad military, were dumb as shit and poor people can't get medicine also. We also have a pretty big unemployment problem. To say we'er the "best" is just a typical american ethnocentric statement. Why must we always insist we are better than everyone? OUR Systems the best GOD blesses OUR country. Its nationalism and its dangerous. We are the richist, we have the best army. We are not the smartest, we do not have more freedoms than every other country (at least 6 countries have more freedoms than we do) we do not have the best health care system (although the best doctors) and our preemptive war policy is a bit naziesque. We have taken over 2 countries in the past 2 years and if Bush gets reelected you can add North Korea to that list and probably someone else (most likeley mideast). So talk about how great we are and how bush is the man for the job, and listen to pulley while you get shipped off to North Korea next summer to fight a war for dubious reasons (liberation maybe, or Weopons that don't exist, or to overthrow an 'evil man'...if thats the case we better get ready to overthrow saudi arabia, cuba and a shitload other dictators.)

I love america, i love the music, the freedom etc. But the patriot act and this war are testing my resolve. This country is fucked right now. We live in constant fear of fake terrorist attacks and therefore agree w/ anything the government says its doing to make us safer, giving the gov. unlimited power. Patriot act? sure go pass it. War on Iraq? Ok , the sound like terrorists. Gays shouldnt marry? your right, lets put them in concentraiton camps. Mars is the shit? ok,lets spend another billion. More drug testing in school? sure , we wouldnt want another coke head DUI haveing leader of this country would we Mr. Bush.

You can't teach in the state of PA w/ a DUI on your record....but you can have more than one and run the country! Huzzah! what a responsible president!

I actually read all (or at least most of the comments - some of that shit that Seth kid wrote was way too fucking long) and I wasn't gonna comment because, let's be honest here, arguing about politics on a punk site is about as pointless as arguing about punk music on a punk site. But when I read this comment - "the majority of Europe makes the US look like third world country, politically speaking the US is where Europe was 200 years ago" - I couldn't help but laugh and chuckle at the ignorance. 200 years ago was 1804 - and Europe was a vastly different place. France was just emerging from its revolution, Italy and Germany weren't even countries in today's sense, Russia was dominated by a Czar (or Tsar if you prefer) and Europe was still to see several traumatic and catastrophic wars. If anything, Europe has become more like America in the last 200 years. Look at the EU - Europe is trying to consolidate along Federalist and Republican (not the party, but ideas relating to a Republic) ideals to become a counterweight to American supremacy and economic dominance. To say Europe is more politically advanced is just absurd - I mean Italy alone has had like 20 different governments or something.

Seriously - acknowledge that while the system might not be run by the best person (I personally think it is, but I do wish he'd seriously curtail spending) it is still the best system the world has seen and has proven to be the standard against which other governments are held and the model against which new ones are formed.

We cant possibly have differing minds and opinions in this country! Tying "Religious" people in with politics and saying they are all conservative intolerant buffoons(essentially what you are doing) is closest to a closed minded intolerance as you can get. This arrogant mind set is what destroys our country the most.

Go to resources like http://www.gregpalast.com for more information.

2- I'm surprised by the posters who say "fuck politics, music won't change anything". That's incorrect, and a sad comment on your individual outlooks on art and life.

So far, the Bush Administration has chosen NOT to stand up and take responsibility."Anonymous replied, "This is the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard. How can you seriously blame just one man (President) for a heinous crime that slipped in the back door?"
There's a difference between someone taking responsibility and someone taking the blame. It's one of the downsides of being a leader- even if you are not directly to blame for a catastrophe, if it occurs on your watch it's proper to take responsibility (if not necessarily the blame). Sorry you misunderstood.

What I meant by "liberal" is that my Dad cares about things besides corporate handouts (like he gets any, he runs his own small business, privately owned and founded by himself) and tax breaks. He oposes the war in Iraq, he supports gay marrige, etc.

"So basically, if youre a member of a country club (aka in a higher tax bracket...and dont jump all over me here for this - you know most members of CC's are going to be in the higher tax bracket. It's not a stereotype, just a fact), youre gaining just as much from a Democratic president than a Republican one."
again, people with money (yes my dad is rich) do actually think about things besides how to get more money and tax breaks. My dad is concerned about the welfare of other people in this country and this world.

"If you really wanted to turn heads at a country club, vote libertarian (who want to eliminate the income tax and corporate handouts), or another third party candidate." yea that would really turn heads, i wasn't saying that, i was just saying not everyone in a CC is a republican or a greedy power crazed old man. Some people just belong to country clubs cuz their parents did. like me, like my dad. CC's dont hurt anyone, I don't know what the big deal is. yea you gotta have money to belong, someones gotta pay for the upkeep of the grounds and the professional staff (its not like your payin Mcdonalds wages to the cooks) so thats why its expensive. but if you've got the money, its just somewhere to go for privacy and nice surroundings or to golf low key and shit. fuck off.

I dont know, the golfing is really nice and so is the food. Its also small, quiet and old school. It is a bit snooty to be sure, but I dont' hang out w/ anyone there, I just go w/ my family or girlfriend for a nice dinner on occasion or to swim (the pool isnt crowded).
