If a show could be explained through a one-word-sexually-related episode, this one would simply be: "Boner".

The drive from Richmond to Philly is always interesting. It's either smooth sailing, or a traffic clusterfuck. Going up-clusterfuck, coming back- smooth sailing.

Anyways, the Souls' were having a 2-night stand at the Trocadero in Philly's Chinatown. I went for both nights, night-1 featuring Let It Burn, The Unseen, Avail, and the Souls'. Great night, great fun, except for the moronic 13-year old chicks bitching about Avail. Whatever.

But on to my original topic, night-dos. I missed the Loved Ones, and am truly pissed. For those unaware, the Loved Ones features members of Paint It Black, Kid Dynamite and Trial By Fire. If anyone caught the set, please feel free to comment, I’d love to hear.

I did catch Grey Area, playing their second reunion show in just over a year. The set was much tighter than last year’s at the Kid Dynamite reunion. And seemingly much longer. At the conclusion of the set, as equipment was being taken down, the crowd went so nuts begging for one more song, that the drums were actually reassembled for an impromptu version of the classic token entry cut “Birthday”, complete with a monstrous superman-stage dive from Ernie. Highlights: Sour Grapes, Colossus, Birthday… whole fucking set.

Hot Water Music made the drive up from the Salad Days studio in Maryland for the night of fucking rock. In case you haven’t received the memo, phone call or email, Hot Water Music is one of the best live bands on the fucking planet. From the opening of “Remedy”, through several new songs played, all the way to closing with “Turnstile”, Hot Water Music did nothing more than further contribute to the above-referenced wood.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention something. On night-1, the Souls announced that the 2-nights in Philly were for the recording of a live album. Yippy-kaye-yay motherfuckers. Night one was a lot of newer material (“How I…”, “Anchors”). Night 2-old shit. Hell’s yeah…

I love the way you Philly kids get into shows. It always brings a smile to my face. But seeing your reactions to old Bouncing Souls material, amazing. Every single one of you were pumping your fist and screaming your lungs out to “Joe Lies”, “Ballad Of Johnny X”, “Argyle”, “Kate is Great” and so many others. This was by far an incredible night. Maybe I sound a little sappy, but with all the bullshit I see in music today, this was about as pure as it gets. Good music, good people, and even lunch at Geno’s. Rock out with your cock out.

ari katz sings on a Grey area song. I wanted to know what it was called.

During the set, some dude ran up and sang Ari's part. Ernie jokingly said, "Fuck you, that's Ari Katz's part"

This score is for people think you get a good steak at Genos or Pats. They both suck & the only people who go there are out of towners who don't know this first thing about a good cheesesteak anyway. They go to one of those two shitholes when they're in Philly & leave thinking they had a real Philly cheesesteak. Suckers.

At the NY show they said the same thing about recording the show for a live record. Perhaps they will pick the best show and release that one. That would be really lame if they mix and match from 3 or more different shows. The NY show was ok, but there sets are getting to be way too predictable. They play pretty much the same songs every show. Boohoo.

    My Score:

It was great when HWM came out at the end of the BS set to do "Trusty Chords" with them, and Chris from HWM jumped into the crowd and was upside down for at least 30 seconds.

A funny thing happened when I was waiting in line (at least I thought it was funny). Gerald Colepan from Fox 29 local news comes up to the line with a camera guy. He addresses the line: "We're doing a story on how independent groups like the Bouncing Souls can be successful without the help of radio or MTV play! Who wants to talk?" Nobody says anything. So he proceeds to walk up and down the line and talk to one or two kids on camera in search of the perfect soundbyte. For some reason he singles me out. "Wanna talk about the Bouncing Souls?" My first thought was "I don't wanna be on camera like some lunatic fan" but then I thought fuck it; if it'll help bring attention to the Bouncing Souls and real punk in general then it's worth it.
So he starts talking to me and has a real attitude. You can just tell this guy is pissed that he fucked up somewhere along the way, and is wishing he was viewed as a credible journalist and not talking to a bunch of kids waiting outside a punk show. He's asking me these general questions: "How'd you hear of the BS, What makes their shows great, etc." The funny thing is when I was done talking, he says in this funny loud voice "So you mean to tell me that the Bouncing Souls remember that ROCK is supposed to be FUN!?!?" (This must be his thesis statement- why else would he say it so loud and strangely?) I say "Yea, you said it best." He says "NO! Say it!" So I then turned to the camera and said "The BS remember that rock is supposed to be fun." It reminded me of the Simpsons where Apu has the octuplets and the reporter says "Would you say you're on Cloud 9?" Apu tries to respond when the reporter says "NO! Say it! We need the soundbyte!" Fucking reporters and their soundbytes.

ps- the story has not yet aired to my knowledge.

    My Score:

My comment about Brian McTernan had to deal with the fact that every record he produces is starting to sound the same to me. He's like John Feldman in that every record has the exact same snare and guitar tone. Also I dislike "Flight and a Crash" and think "Caution" is decent at best. I had to blame someone so I blamed him. I'll take J. Robbins anyday even though his recent stuff hasn't been so hot. Score is for "No Division," shitty production and all.

i am so jealous you went to both shows. but that is awesome there will be a live cd. lets hope it will be a double cd. they have enough material. and isnt it weird that they are now going to have a live EP and a live full length cd. the live EP is average at best. i think they just put that out so that people would not miss the souls too much.

The Troc's sound is strange..... if you are on the floor it seems to sound better on the floor and not in the back. something with the acoustics make it sound bass heavy and muddle the vocals.
generally upstairs sounds good, but it's almost always 21 ....

i can't wait for the live release. they had a pro-tools rig pulling all the channels off the sound board, so it will not just be the live mix that was pumped through the house system.

    My Score:

The Loved Ones left a good impression in my mind. Nothing really stands out but they sounded big for a three piece and very tight. This was the first time I ever heard of Grey Area and made the 2.5 hour drive worth it. Despite the sound being a bit off (could barely hear the lead guitar) they played an awesome set. What is the song called where Ari Katz sings? I didn't like the new Hot Water Music songs they played because there was no dual singing. Chuck sang and Chris played lead or vice versa. However, they played 3 songs off of No Division! Awesome and Turnstile sounded amazing. Not sure what is the big deal with the Bouncing Souls but whatever, they were alright in my book.
