Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Can I explain Saetia? No. Can I tell you what they sound like or anything pertinent to making a decision on whether you should buy this CD? No. So I'll make this short and sweet.

Attempt at describing Saetia's sound: Melodic and violent, chaotic and collected. Moving from one to the other quite easily, often times in the same song. Heavy on the screams, the vocals sound like, gasp, there is some actual meaning to what is being said. They are loaded with emotion. Emotion = emo right? Could be, I dunno, don't really care, cause Saetia sounds pretty damn good. One of those bands that can't be pigeon holed.

Attempt at describing Saetia's history: I've got no clue. All I know is that it says in the back of the booklet that they were a band from Feb 1997-Oct 1999. Again, according to the back of the booklet, they released one LP, a 7", and a demo cassette, as well as a random comp song. Far too little, that's how much material Aerosmith should have released. A band this good should have stayed together and released more, but what can you do?

The CD itself: Contains 22 songs total, 17 of which are listed. What the last five are, I've got no idea. But it's five more songs, and that's not something to complain about at all. Recording quality may not be the best ever, but the music more than makes up for it. 22 songs for like 12 bucks? Sounds like a deal to me. Level Plane put out this release, a great label that not many people know of.

*I get scene points for doing this review and liking this band, but since I loathe the notion of any tribulization of any scene or music in general, you can have them. You're welcome.

    My Score:

Saetia were indeed incredible, the only thing that could've made them better is if they had a better screamer. Unfortunately they didn't get the mass of their fans until they broke up.

and this was a pretty weak review considering how influential this band actually was/is. Score is for the review.

Fucking amazing cd. If you like this you should check out Hot Cross (already mentioned) and Off Minor - who are actually better than Hot Cross. Also, one of the guitarists also formed The Fiction, who are ok. But they do have a split with the Birthday Boyz - who rock ass. This is good screamo.

they are great and original, too bad they didn't stay together, but i heard those 5 unlisted songs on the CD are them playing live at ABC No Rio. 22 songs... cheap price, good band, thats a good deal!

    Posted by Sally_Field on 2005-03-28 14:09:01

Probably the only band I'd give a 10/10 to. Or at least a 9.5.

I'm sure bands love to have more fans years after they broke up than they did when they were actually together.

there's one or two songs that leave you a bit "what the fuck?!" but the rest of them are so incredible it doesn't matter. that reviewer don't give this band justice. it's great they lasted such a short time - the legend that was Saetia lives on and it's so much better because they'll never fade into a shit emo band (some people may argue that they WERE a shit emo band, but i disagree. sorry.) this music is amazing. fact.

This sounds like what it would sound like if a bunch of kids in NYC were really into gravity records hardcore but also in tune to the trends sprouting up in the suburbs to the east and west of them in the late 1990s. I thoroughly enjoy this album, although there are some fairly absurd moments. On track 11, the line "because the softest lips tell the most precious secrets" makes me want to fucking HURL every time I hear it. There's more than enough energy dumped into all these songs to make up for the minor annoyances, however. People seem to either give this band entirely way too much credit or talk copious amounts of unnecessary shit on them, so I guess I'd say you're either gonna love this or hate it.

This discography rules for two reasons: 1) because it has everything and 2) because it allowed me to auction off all my original pressings of the records contained herewith for a couple hundred bucks. Thanks, Skylab/eBay!

Are you fucking kidding me? Since when do all music lovers have to like the same music?

I never could get into this band. Maybe it was the fact that so many people said it was absolutely fantastic, so I was expecting more than there was to here. To each his own I guess.

    My Score:

Saetia is a great band period. The intensity that Billy brings and his style of writing is in no comparison. The lyrics are violent but meaningful. The cd I agree is very long, but listening through all the way is like reading a book. Altough I never got to see Saetia I did, however, see hot cross and find him to bring a lot of intensity, probaly more intensity that you will witness than going to any other show.
For the comment about You and I.
I think you and I is an awesome band but I feel people take advantage of their old style and use it for scene cred mostly. They put out tons of emotion and it isn't the typical love song emo screamo that people sing. Their songs were different and always had issues surrounding them. They have inspired so many bands (thursday) but still are a band that people are truly unaware about. A note would be to buy the discography cd and the curtain falls. It has explanation and writings in there that are pretty cool. Definitely check out THIS SHIP WILL SINK and HOT CROSS. Hot cross is ex saetia, you and I. This ship will sink contains you and I. Also Casey and Chris of You and I are putting out demos to their new band WE ARE EMPIRE. I am stoked for this.

Incredible, Incredible, Incredible. Anyone who claims to love music, and does not own this album is a fraud.

Though, we shouldn't all complain about them breaking up so much. Doing that style of scream ruins your voice completely after a few years, anyhow.

Plus, Billy went on to start Hot Cross. Good move in my book.
