Review by: Brian See others by this writer The Academy Is (link) Only registered users can post comments Published on June 1st 2004 In light of the recent name change this band underwent, their new name will provide the template for the remainder of this review. The Academy Is…not a total Taking Back Sunday rip-off, but the sound is definitely there, especially the track “In Our Defense.” The Academy Is…thankfully not that poppy, for what that’s worth. The Academy Is…much less dynamic than they’re obviously going for, which seriously affects the overall feel. The Academy Is…treading that awkward “laid-back-but-not-quite” middle ground between energetic and sincerely mellow á la Northstar, but aren’t comfortable with it. The Academy Is…fronted by a singer who, despite some occasional clever vocal patterns (nonetheless overshadowed by the fact that Adam Lazzara has already done them), really isn’t that strong of a vocalist at all. The Academy Is…pretty good at hiding their lack of talent with lots of pretty little atmospheric octaves. The Academy Is…occasionally capable of writing decent lyrics when said lyrics have an actual direction. The Academy Is…further proof that if you play pop-punk in Chicago (as opposed to Chicago pop-punk, if you get my drift), Fueled By Ramen is probably already interested in you, regardless of talent, originality, creativeness, etc. al. The Academy Is…nonetheless still capable of putting together a decent melody once in a while (I feel quite guilty when one of them is enough to make me sing along), which is why that score to the side is a little higher than planned, yet they still leave plenty of room for improvement. WHAT KINDA CRACK ARE YOU ON? I was at a The Academy Is... concert in November and they were better than the headlinging band [The All American Rejects] William's voice is strong and while I LOVE TBS. TAI is NOTHING like them. The Ep was different than the albumn but thatwas bound to happen. So screw you. EP>full length by far. i dont know what you all are on... but the academy is ROCKS MY SOCKS! you know their great, so admit it. Bill and Adam T. Siska rock it like it's hot. So is he labeling "Chicago Pop-Punk" as bad? Why does this review contradict basically everything he says? Album Owns This album is awesome, The academy doesn't sound like TBS, reviewer just wants TBS#2 (even tho TBS isnt really orginal) this reviewer is.... sucking adam's dick Assumptions. Concept reviews are hard. Don't tackle them unless you really think you can write. The poster directly below is correct. actually he was trying to say that they play pop punk music and they are from chicago. but they dont actually play chicago style pop punk (such as larry arms and alkaline trio). what the reviewer is trying to say is : There's already been 2 one-line reviews bashing the EP so I figured I should put some time into describing what makes it suck. And no, I am far from labeling Chicago pop-punk as bad. The Academy Is…further proof that if you play pop-punk in Chicago (as opposed to Chicago pop-punk, if you get my drift), So is he labeling "Chicago Pop-Punk" as bad? I saw this band with LTJ and Grabass Charlestons, their set was utterly painful. i am sure this review was probably good, but just looking at it gave me a headache, don't do it again some webzine did a review of this record that was shorter, more to the point, but said basically the same thing. Interesting review. I haven't heard them although I heard the singer's solo stuff a while back and it was pretty awful. Couldn't believe FBR picked them up. shit. plain and simple. check out the reviews at pastepunk.com and punkrocks.net if you dont believe me. This score is for a thoroughly confusing review. |
