Published on June 11th 2004 I'll start by saying I was never a real fan of this band. I've seen them live, opening for random acts, and wasn't a fan of their live show. Their music struck me as generic, their band as nothing outstanding, and their stage presence nothing stellar. However, I was interested in hearing this album after some kids seemed to like it more than the new Bad Religion album. That being said, you can wonder my astonishment at actually finding myself enjoying some of "Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge," the major label sophomoric effort from My Chemical Romance. The album starts off with an incredibly hooky "Helena." The lead singer has obviously had major label vocal training since the last album. The production is the most obvious improvement, as the chorus is so full and energetic that it's almost... good? By the end of the song, I almost found myself singing along to the amateurish, high-school-heartbreak lyrics. But I'll say more on those later. "Give 'Em Hell, Kid" starts off with a quick paced bassline, some fast drums, and all in all a pretty nice track. However, when the chorus picks up, I feel like I'm listening to the last song all over again, with lyrics so obviously written for singalongs at a live show, they lose any meaning they could ever possibly hold. Example: "If you were here / I'd never have a fear / So go on, live your life / But I miss you more than I did yesterday." Ugh. The album keeps up with this formula, of a very well produced, very hooky (in a dark, Hot-Topic-sellable way), easy-to-sing-with choruses until it becomes painfully obvious that there's no end to shallow water anytime soon. "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" not only has the worst title for a song ever, the song follows through with being equally bad. The lyrics really show here; show how badly they are written. The song recounts some high-school love interest and then bursts into the chorus of repeating "I'm not okay, you wear me out." Skip. Now, either "The Ghost Of You" is actually a good track, or it's just a good change of pace from "I'm Not Okay..." but I found this on the same moderately enjoyable level of the first track. And then... the album keeps going. And going. And going. I keep listening, but I have trouble differentiating one song from the next. Songs like "It's Not A Fashion Statement, It's A Deathwish" turn me off from the beginning with such awful titles, but I give them a listen anyways. It's all pretty formulaic.
All in all, the production is the most redeeming quality of the album. It brings a fun little summer flavor to the CD, and the catchyness can even make you like the disc for a few listens until you actually pay attention to what they're singing about. Shallow, unoriginal, overproduced and yet fun in a disposable and commercial way, don't rush out to get this one.

To me the production's the worst part of the album. This album would be much more post-hardcore if it wasn't for the production behind it, which seemed to poppy it up. I could be wrong, but that's what I got. You guys paly good I would guess so yeah but really you guy's play awesome why does everyone love my chemical romance so much? they suck. end of story. There's just something a/b this album! It's great. UNLIKE The Black Parade. I would classify this band as extreme brutal death/grind. I love this album, I really do. my favorite album of all time. fuck you, brand new fanboy. me being a Fugazi and Minor Threat fan I like My Chemical Romance gasp they seem like a really cool bunch of guys unlike Fall Out Boy they are true to themselfs I liked this album. My Chemical Romance is pretty good. They have really good lyrics and Gerard Way (as my best friend says) is totally fuckable. At first I paid out my emo sister for liking them. But the more I've listened to this album, the more I've fallen in love with it. Gerard Way is one charismatic frontman. Helena, I'm not ok, Thankyou for the venom...every tune pumps out teen angst and frustration with a variety of things, death, young love, the Catholic Church. All things that any young person (eg. me) that was brought up on a not so healthy diet of rosaries and mass can relate to. "Preach all you want but who's gonna save me?" Awesome, explosive, real. And using vampires and zombies or whatever as metaphors? Brilliant! Dude, i seriously agree, i mean, when this first came out and no one knew about it, i thought, yeah this is a good band, i'll listen to them for a while, and they were good, when i could listen to them and not have to hear it be over-played on every radio station in town. Especially when all the total moron kids at school who are supposed to like crap like jay-z and christina aguilera or whatever, started singing it all the time, the i realised how much of a photocopy the lyrics are on this album is, it's pretty much the same as any old crappy newbie band out there that wants instant fame. i do admit liking them to start, but i agree that the lyrics are incredibly shallow and generic. not much more neds to be said for the black parade album. all i can say is good riddance to another pemo band (pop-emo). - - - herby Speedy, speedy, speedy.....and pretty pop-like in what's related to lyrics. The drummin' reminds me of a fast-paced Offspring version, but the lyrics belong more to pop, or even drum and bass....not a bad album as it comes, but shows the wide range MCR has to evolve in quality of lyrics and music.... I used to be addicted to this amazng album!! Well i simply know that this aulbum is amazing! It is out of this wourld! I think that Gearad Way is the most dreamyest guy on the planet even though my bro and dad think his gay i told tem that he has to be bysexawal because he is married wiv 2 kidz. I cant belive he is 30! ha my sister has this cd but every time she goes to work i steal it from her room just to listen to it... the one time i stole it for about a month becasue she wasn't listing to it and i still have it haha i love it ... it s great master piece personally i love the first cd better. but you know; they are still learning everything. give it time. this cd was good. everyone says for your "sophmore" album, itll suck. well i don think it sucked, i thought it was good, could a few touch ups, but you know, they were a not very well known band who just wanted to make music, thats what they did. good job.. I bought this cd after hearing the song "Helena" once and I just HAD to hear the rest of their album. I love this cd and if you really listen to it, the lyrics mean a lot more than they appear to. There are lots of metaphors that are easily missed, which is why a lot of people don't "get" my chemical romance. Also they deal with a lot of deeper subjects (also easily missed in the goth theatrics). I know this guy has a right to his opinion but judging the songs based on the titles is a little bit too "I'm not gonna like this no matter WHAT!!!" I heard this album on my friends Ipod and I liked it so much I payed a couple of nigras to steal the Ipod from him. After they stole it he killed himself though... he was an hero. i love it! It is a very good album. Hits like Helena and I'm Not Okay and very cool songs like It's Not A Fashion Statement, It's A Death Wish. Decent album, but the lyrics and subject matter leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe they'll grow up and stop whining like emo bitches. I absolutely loved this album! this is one of my favorite punk rock bands on the circut right now and im pretty sure it will stay that way for a while. When I first heard MCR it was on my friend's iPod and I fell in love with them. So I went out looking for one of their albums and finally found one. It wasn't until I listened a couple times to where I understood what the songs meant. I've also realized how much I relate to them. I love those those guys so much! I didn't want to like this but I can't stop listening to it recently. I can probably listen to it because I have the ability to drone out those lyrics. I think it is one of the best albums ever made!!!!!!! half of the people endorsing this cd can't even spell what they're saying. This is one of the most important rock albums of the last decade, reinventing MOR, bringing back singalong to metal, and a huge measure of IRONY. Do you even know what that is? It usually comes with a SENSE OF HUMOUR. My favs are Hang em up high a more metal, goth one which took a few listens to like , then so this is not a fashion statement but a fucking death wish and what can i say i'm hooked with all there songs you can feel what gerald way was feeling and he says stuff in his songs advice, stuff that helps me. Yes, it's true that the band can't seem to shake the same themes of heartbreak, death, and violence, but "Sweet Revenge" as a whole is an enjoyable, high-energy CD. I have never listened to their first album, but I can still respect the catchy lyrics and melodies that are present on this album. Tracks 1-6, 9, 12, and 13 are usually blasted on my CD player, especially track 4- hilarious ending (*giggle*). Those of you accusing the band of selling out... where would music be without bands actually being seen and heard in the media?. Don't hate a good band because it's gaining success and popularity, or getting too "mainstream," as it has been said so many times. All in all, this is a good album. I just hope the band can shake things up for round 3. this cd rocks, but the first one is better, especially the drums, i think they switched drummers or something or maybe bryan jus toned down whe they went main stream, anyway my chemical romance is awsome Well here's what i thought, when i first burned myself a copy of this CD i luved it. i though damn what a great band. B/c i immediately luved the songs especially Cemetary Street or however u spell it. well anyways so i thought WTF why not go and see them live. So i decided buy tickets to warped tour. i went to warped tour and i thought i'm so lucky. well it turns out they were ridiculous. i mean what was up w/high five time. i laughed my ass off at that. but fuck the good thing about going to see them was the fact that i went crowd surfing and some hot asian fell on me. anyways seeing them lowered the score. and by the way they look really fucked up. i mean they dress like Michael Jackson. they need to start workin on performin better and less worrying about their clothes. absoloutley.....ave i spelt dat rite This album is just as disposable as all of the other emo/screamo bands hopping on the bandwagon. What are they doing on punknews.org? They're not a "punk" band by any stretch. Listen to the lyrics. There are NO songs about individuality and NO songs against the establishment. And just to let you know now, I have the album. I've heard all of the songs. If you want to argue, make a VALID point. You're not proving anything by saying, "lYkE oMgZZ!!!1 mcR is sOoOoO aWesUm!!!11 iF u dnt lYkE deM u suX!!!!" Everyone has their opinions, but they'll probably grow out of this album in a couple of years. This is by no means a "melodic" album, but rather Gerard wailing blatantly out of key about disposable-but-marketable topics. If you're on punknews.org, you might as well listen to some PUNK music, like The Clash or Bad Religion or Dead Kennedys, but most of you probably haven't heard of any of those guys. Sigh....what a mess the music scene has become.... Sur e sexy as he seems this boy clearly got problems, his wife is woprse than him. Strung out was playing and there were people in the pit but when MCR started playing the it filled up like crazy. They were all young emo make up mother fuckers who know nothing about the scene. I, in fact like the creative, humurous titles for the songs-but wished the the songs in themselves would get off the sappy dieing romance topic. As an 11 year old, I can't quite comprehend why people would either dislike a band because it's popular, or having a main goal in life to have sex with the band memebers...but that's just me. This cd rocks. I have a really short attention span, and usually get bored of albums really easily, but this 1 i listen to all the time, and i mean all the time. Gerard is a HOTT SEXY BEAST i listen to the same cd every day and NEVER get tired of it even though i easily get tired of others cds MCR is one of the best bands there is! I love this album. I listen to it every day, about three times a day in its entirety. I had never heard of MCR until the beginning of July 2005. Then, I saw the music video Helena, and I got hooked. I bought their sophomore album first, and then, when I had heard from a lot of people that the first album was better, I went out and bought that one too. my chemical romance produce music that i just dont get tired of. i always want to listen to them. there's nothing better. I would like to state for the record that I am a 22-year old male. I listen mostly to Devo and NOFX and their respective soundalikes, and for some reason I really enjoy this album. Does that really make me the only non-15 year old who likes them? Come on, there MUST be others. Get over yourselves. whoever thinks MY CHEMICAL ROMACNE is bad..u need to go see a fucking doctor or something..ur all so fucking retarted..i mean gosh.. i love the whole album and i think the videos are great too. i love the first record too and everyone has a different opinion so i'll just say mine. they're one of the greatest bands i've heard and they're visually interesting too by how much the move around. they're just another band doing what they want to do and they've influenced me greatly. they help me concentrate, which helps me write. i thank them for that, and the chance i hope Frank Iero will give me when i finish my book. So we were stoked that they were coming out with a new album, so when a friend got it like the day it came out we all went to have a listen, the first song was very good. after that it just seems like a mere shadow of the once good band. Then we stumbled upon "I'm Not Okay" I was literally cringing at this piece of pop-punk shit. After hearing this and alot of very repeatitive drums we took the CD and tossed it. This band changed my life. They changed the kind of music i listen to. Their music is so awesome. Always full with energy. They have a different quality that other bands don't have. All of it seems to be coming from an IDIOT who doesn't understand much of anything, the point to the songs, or the catchy and intoxicating music. Here is my story. I had heard of MCR before I never really gave them much thought. Then one morning I was watching MTV2 and Helena came on and I saw Gerard Way and I thought I had died and gone to heaven(or hell :P) because he was just so hot to me. This made me listen to the song closely. That same night I went out and bought the album and I have been hooked on listening to it ever since. That was back at the start of April. For the most part the songs are all different in beats and what they are trying to say. I love Helena, but my personal favorite is the last song "I Never Told You What I Do For A Living." It really brought out my true self and has changed me all together. I love having this dark out look on things. Black is definitely my new color and MCR pictures is the next thing to cover my bedroom walls and dominate my Pictures file on my computer. MCR is great. It all just depends on your taste in music. If you took the time to actually listen to it before you formed your judgments upon it then maybe you'd get that this album's concept is baised upon a love of the band, old horror movies and the macabre, and it's mixed with personal feelings and things that have taken place in their life. Gerard's voice was just as good then as it is now, and the musical structure is a fantastic mix between your catchy screamo band, and metal riffs. Until then, ta ta. i forgot to change my stars =) I could not be happier with the new CD. i think it's brilliant and it's all i can do to keep from singing/screaming along while listening to it. I think Gerard has so much passion in his voice... it aches to listen to him sing... in the best possible way! Ill be honest, i really liked the first CD by this band, and I enjoyed them live. I even wear their t-shirt all the time. That being said, I just cant get into this new CD. Ive tried to listen to it on several different occasions, and it just doesnt grab me. Its not a bad record, but its not a good one. And considering the amount of mediocrity pouring onto the shelves lately, this fits right in, as nothing groundbreaking, but good enough. I dont know about anyone else, but I dont think Good Enough cuts it anymore. I have to say, this was a pretty damn good record. But compared to their first CD, "I Brought You My Bullets You Brought Me Your Love," "Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge" is a lot pop-ier. It's "violent-pop," to quote the June issue of AP magazine. There was a lot less screaming, which really surprised me. I guess you can't expect another "Vampires..." from "I Brought You My Bullets..." But the vocals were still amazing, and when Gerard sang "hotel Bella Muerte," on "The Jetset Life is Gonne Kill You" that definitely got me listening. My favorite track had to be "You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us in Prison." The lead singer of The Used sang along with Gerard, which gave the song a really nice sound. The little guitar rift at the end of the song was terrific. "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" wasn't one of my favorite songs, though. It was more mainstream and less MCR. But I'm not going to put the song down, because ever since it's been released on the air My Chemical Romance has been getting a bit of the lime light they deserve. I liked the lyrics in "Thank You for the Venom" and "It's not a Fashion Statement..." is an awesome song altogether! The album wasn't what I expected it to be, but it was still a great one. It was just different. The lyrics were still one-of-a-kind, and MCR took a a good next step with "Three Cheers for Sweet this album is amazing and mcr is one of my favorite bands. they are nice boys who put so much effort into everything they do. this record is more produced than the first, but equal in the level of talent. and i definitely dont think their lyrics are "highschool" related at all. whoever said that is a shithead. theyre a great band. and their style is appealing and catchy. theres nothing wrong with catchy. so, if you like hard hooks and alot of energy... you should most definitely get this album. then get the first. bitches. Let me start off by saying Green Vandal is a prick. Yeh this album is decent not as good as the 1st, in my opinion. Way's passionate vocals blow most singers out of the water, they are emotive and strong (much like the lyrical content). The guitars are well arranged and intricate, the bass is pounding and the drums are...for want of a better word...phat! Admittingly this album is not nearly as good as the first, nor are the song as complex but the music is good. My opinion is the same as it was for their first album - this band is overhyped and undertalented. Not bad - there are about 4 stand out tracks that are fuckin awesome, but the rest isn't great to listen to It's pretty good. Pretty formulaic too though. I wish they would've done a little more with the Old Westernish bits that only pop up twice, like the whistles in the beginning of "Hang 'em High" and the intro of saloon-styled piano to "You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us in Prison." I can't see them pulling it off as well as someone like Murder By Death, but it would be a great change of pace for this style of music. Thats a fucking lame cover, looks like its for some anime crap seems like this band has some musical potential. i mean, they seem to have the ability to write pretty catchy riffs. maybe when they stop writing about vampires and girlfriends, they'll be alright. |
