Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

The other day I thought to myself, “What’s an element that’s always missing from metal that I’d one day love to see incorporated?” I then placed the bacon, egg, and cheese Hot Pocket onto the desk table and said aloud, “Fun,” when what should happen other than the latest full-length from German death metal act Heaven Shall Burn falls into my lap courtesy of the U.S. Postal Service. More like, “Heaven shall fall into my lap with an answered prayer!”

Eliciting comparisons such as At the Gates and In Flames, you know these guys are just out looking to have a good time. Song titles like “Architects of the Apocalypse” and “Voice of the Voiceless” proves that Heaven Shall Burn strays from both clichés and taking themselves too seriously. The string orchestra and accompanying piano in the closing track to this album are what horns are to ska; they’re simply here to lighten the mood! It’s like cotton candy, clowns, and a day at the ballpark all rolled into one!

I can only imagine the gleaming smile on the drummer’s face as he pounds his double bass into oblivion, and the head-bobbing theatrics of the dual-guitar attack as they noodle away. The only thing you’ll want to do hearing these interlaced, dramatic growls is dance it up, that’s for sure.

[For those looking for a serious review, this is half-decent European death metal mixed with American metalcore that is absolutely killed by how overdramatic the band is. The end.]

wow what a bunch of fucking idiots. taking themselves too seriously? Heaven Shall Burns lyrics focus around issues that, if hadnt it been for your disgustingly and painfully obviously conformist mainstream thought process, you would have noticed are very significant and important. They talk about REAL shit. They dont hype themselves up, they are honest, extremely talented musicians. Anti-gone is one of my favorite albums of the entire year, this is coming from someone who is extremely picky and HATES "hardcore" and "metalcore" and all that other lame shit that has recently emerged. It is one of the heaviest, hardest hitting bands in metal today. I would almost call it industrial, yet its sharp and very crisp all around.

Honestly, it would be nice if they changed it up a little more. You wouldnt listen to it and say "all the songs sound the same" like Cradle of Filth or something, but for at least an instant you might feel that way. This is why i rated it a 9 and not a 10.

    Taking themselves too seriously?

Dude u obviously don't know what u are talking about. While heaps of bands and people are losing their faith in veganism and SxE, those dudes are still true to themselves I would say. I saw them a fair bit of times live and talked a bit with one of them, didn't seem that they were taking themselves 'too seriously'. As the other dude said, read the lyrics and educate yourself! U should also maybe listen to their previous albums to see where they are coming from. Their first mcd is a classic. As fars as HSB album goes, my favourite remain Whatever It May Take.

I don't want to start a debate on that topic but in my opinion, European Metal core bands are more consitant at what they are doing compared to Amercian bands who try to hard (or simply just copy) copy In Flames (Atreyu) or At The gate (Darkest Hour). that said, darkest Hour is a great band indeed!! But I could say the same about some Euro metal act who cpied American bands like xMaroonx's being very influenced by Moning Again, Culture and Birthright.

Anyway the point is, if a review has to be negative, at least make it constructive and objectif!

Who are you to pretend they're not having a good time playing??Just because they're not talking about eggs and giraffes doesn't mean they're sell-outs....just focuse on the technical performances on this album (which are great tho) and read the lyrics...you're right...they're serious...but serious doesn't mean bad!!

The reviewer here is obviously some asshole who doesn't care one bit for progressive lyrics and would rather mock a band that sings about political struggles by talking about how they "take themselves too seriously" and how he's going to enjoy a bacon egg and cheese hot pocket. You are obviously careless and ignorant.

Read their lyrics and educate yourself on the subjects they speak of.

And by the way, classical music makes them serious???? Do you ever listen to metal? Metal is filled with classical guitar-work or violins or pianos. This isn't anything new.

You can go on being careless, but some of us would like to try and do something positive for this fucked up world.

Funny, I could've written a positive review using the same things Greenie used to knock the band.

I think this album is good, not worthy of all the hype, but good anyway.
