Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell (Deluxe)
Register to Vote: Rock the Vote, powered by Credo Mobile

When I picked up the seminal Give 'em the Boot compilation in high school, I thought I had found heaven. It turned me on to nearly every band I currently hold in high regard, and remains a constant favorite. It had memorable tracks from amazing ska and reggae acts, and some extremely potent punk forces as well. One of these was the amazing song "Fifteenth and T", by the Swingin' Utters. From this song, and "The Next In Line" from one of the Fat Wreck comps, I went on to purchase A Juvenile Product of the Working Class and have been hooked ever since. Now the Utters release a long overdue high quality representation of their live show, and I'm incredibly stoked.

After nearly 10 years of love for them, I finally got to see them live my senior year of college, with Pistol Grip and One Man Army in Cleveland. I had my fears, because of the massive amounts of energy and rawness that their albums contain. I was afraid they would be loose and sloppy, too "punk" to play well live, and oh boy was I wrong. They put on an incredible live show, and I have seen them another time since, with Max Huber. When this CD was announced, I was again afraid, because I felt it was now impossible to capture the live spirit and energy of this band on tape. Proving me wrong, the Utters released an amazing CD, fully of piss, vinegar, quality, speed, and great songs.

The CD starts out with "Don't Ask Why" and ends with "Catastrophe" and the in between is pure live goodness. The sound quality is great, Jonny's voice sounds awesome, Darius' rocking guitar is heard, and everything else just falls into place. To put it simply, the CD is a quality testament to the Utters as a live band and a legend in the "punk" field. They throw in some of the more laid back "adult contemporary" (as the put it) tunes like "All I Can Give". They play classics like "London Drunk" and "Teenage Genocide", the latter coming in perfect segue from the amazing rendition of the aforementioned "Fifteenth and T". Overall, there isn't a whole lot to say, aside from that this CD is awesome for fans of the Utters.

And that's what a live CD should be. It's for the fans who may never get to see them, or for those who want to remember fondly the live shows after the band is gone. The only complaint I could have with this CD is that it's too short. It has 23 songs, and leaves me wanting for more. This is a problem that you'll see with live CDs or "Greatest Hits" compilations of older bands. They strike a good balance of the old and the new, and the setlist can't really disappoint, but I want to hear every song they've ever recorded live! However, what you walk away with is a quality document of the Utter's superior musicianship and wonderful personalities.

"Seems like people such as yourself would only enjoy gerneric sounding bands like Youth Brigade. I've seen the utters perform a handful of times, and were as always, amazing. Even if what you said were true about the utters being drunk at that particular show, that still wouldn't justify any of your opionions about them as a band. By reading your comments, you've probrably never even heard a swingin' utters album. Get a life."

I own three albums & a 7". That's one of the reasons it pissed me off so much when I saw them live. I'd actually wasted time convincing people to stick around for that bullshit.

And who the fuck is calling Youth Brigade generic? They were playing what most bannds are trying to do now 20 years ago. Watch Another State of Mind.

What opinions is the drunkenness supposed to be justifying? I stated pretty clearly that they were too drunk to play, and that caused them to fuck up every second song, and alienate the people that were willing to give them a chance & stick around. I think the only real opinioon that I implied was that they were burned out assholes, which is an opinion based on my personal experience seeing them live, and not a judgement of them as human beings.

Regardless, The Utters still suck, and you can eat a bag of dicks.

uhh, i wasnt comparing the two, I was saying the Briggs suck. I was saying the Utters are good because they are a pretty straight forward punk band but not skinhead/wifebeater/combat boot -do-the-hardcore-pick-up-sticks-in-the-pit garbage band like the briggs, or casualties or some other god awful punk band. not comparing any bands. I dont think the Utters sound like Story of the Year but I'd rather hear the Utters than some lame screamo band of the week also. Although, I'd rather hear Story of the Year than the Briggs...

The time frame is confusing me... Didn't "Give 'Em the Boot" come out in 1997 (as well as "Physical Fatness") or so? Where do the "10 years of love" come from?

i've seen the utters all over the country and they've never dissappointed me. first time i saw them was at the middle east with bouncing souls and the descendents. they easily matched the other two bands performances. i saw them a couple more times at coney island high (r.i.p.) and they always put on a great show. but here's the clincher... i saw them at the troubador opening for youth brigade and it was pretty obvious to me and a bunch of other people i talked too after the show that they blew youth brigade away that night. and don't get me wrong i really dig youth brigade.

i'll be picking up this one today.

Now i'm not saying the utters are amazing or anything, yea they are kinda middle of the road and they do have some bad songs, hell bad albums ( i thought the s/t was terrible) but the new cd is really good and 'juvenile product' is great, its just a classic, brings me back to 97 when punk was new to me. They arent one of my fav bands but they are a good solid listen if your looking for some straight up punk that isnt that gutter shit only 16 year olds can listen too (like the briggs) or some super cliche band of the week ( like whatever fashioncore band is hot at the moment)

"The Utters fucking suck. There. I said it, and I mean it.

I saw them play with youth brigade last year. After youth brigade finished, a good chunk of the crowd, who were there to see youth brigade, decided to leave after a couple utters songs.

The Swinging utters, being way too drunk to keep things tight, spent the whole show swearing at the people who did stick around, and bitching them out for not appreciating how much the swinging utters kicked ass. Pretty fucking punk.

If half the crowd leaves after the opening band, maybe they should be headlining. Also, maybe you should be appreciative to the people that decided to stick around and watch you suck, instead of bitching them out. Also, maybe you should try giving people a reason to stick around (For instance, not fucking up every second song because you drank too much before you got on stage, Most local bands learn that after their second or third show).

Fuck the utters. They said they would never come back. I hope that wasn't drunk talk."

The "Trailer Park" of the Bracket Live CD is great.

And Swingin' Utters aren't amazing I don't think but a thing which really makes me love them is how it gives me a feel of laziness and is just so awesome to break a few beers and chill out to, mess around. honestly, that says it all. Give em the boot was one of the first comps i ever owned, I remember getting it summer of 97, right after the warped tour. I was 17 and punk was new to me, well other than rancid, greenday and nofx, who i got into a few years earlier, but thats when i REALLY got into punk. It turned me onto the swingin utters, as 15th and T was my favorite song on the comp, not to take anything away from the slackers and hepcat...or rancid. ...i'm gonna go listen to that comp again, see ya.

Great cd. Something worth mentioning is the comic book that comes with the liner notes. It's patterned after Scooby Doo, and has the Utters being chased by the ghosts of Joe Strummer, Joey Ramone, Sid Vicious and Darby Crash. Of course, just like Scooby Doo, these ghosts end up being people dressed up to scare the Utters away for some reason, but it's still pretty funny.
