Tuesday nights are widely regarded as the worst night for a band to play a club. Turnouts are usually consistently low on Tuesday nights, for some reason, and bands usually dread the night, even if they're in a big city.

Well, someone forgot to tell Cleveland, because the line to get into this show stretched a quarter-mile down the block from the Grog Shop.

After patiently waiting for what seemed like an eternity [and what was, in actuality, around 30-40 minutes], I got inside, only to find out that Chromatics had already played. Don't get mad at me for not seeing them, I was there before they were even supposed to go on. Blame the line.

Next up was Kill Me Tomorrow. Not knowing what to expect when viewing their set up - guitar, bass, a strangely-assembled stand-up drumkit, and numerous drum machines and samplers - I was bracing for the absolute worst. What I got instead was some of the most unique music I had stumbled upon in quite some time. The only words I can think of to describe their sound are "dirty" and "sexy": these songs were raw blasts of power, with a goth-industrial tinge, that sounded like what the Faint would sound like if they grew up in the slums of LA and not the midwest. An incredibly solid set, to be sure.

Hardcore freakout experts Daughters were up next, and half of their set [which, truth be told, couldn't have been more than 10, 15 minutes tops] seemed to be open mic night for the singer, who cracked as many sardonic jokes as he screamed songs into the mic. In short, the dude was hilarious. During Daughters' set, the first real energy of the show was released by both the band and the crowd, with fingerpointing and moshing galore spreading through the far-beyond-sold-out crowd, raising the room's temperature a few notches [to roughly 150 degrees fahrenheit, give or take a few]. Twenty tiimes more intense live then on record, Daughters are a definite force to be reckoned with.

After an all-too-long gear change [really, any amount of time was too long at this point, considering just how fucking hot the room was], Seattle's pride and joy, the Blood Brothers, took to the stage and dived headfirst into 13-song set with brand new song "B. Horses." The kids didn't seem to care that they didn't know the words, or the appropriate points in the song to clap along or point their fingers in the air - they all simply went off, regardless of what was being played. The band took this unabashed enthusiasm as a cue to test out new material, which they did - seven songs of it. It ranged from the slow waltz of "Crimes" to the coulda-been-a-Burn, Piano Island, Burn outtake "Trash Flavored Trash." The one thing all seven songs had in common, however, was that they were all unbelievably powerful and strong, both in the musicanship and the lyrical voice patterns. The band's new album Crimes easily has potential to be their best yet, with this material.

Even though the set was very heavy on new songs, the band didn't forget about their old albums - "Jennifer" and "Birth Skin/Death Leather" represented their first two discs, and Burn saw a total of four tracks played off of it, including set closer "Cecilia and the Silhouette Saloon". As the band unplugged and tried to leave the stage, they were mobbed by dozens of kids all wanting to shake their hands, ask for a pair of drumsticks, or simply give them a thumbs up for a job well done that night. The band deserved all the praise the audience was heaping upon them, as they are truly one of the best bands in hardcore right now.

wow, that anonymous camera kid is a moron. sure, his/her? pictures are nice and all, but i actually prefer the ones that scott took. a crazy band like blood brothers is fitting for wild shots like that. oh, and the lighting isn't always sufficient. in my shooting of bands i've needed my own light plenty of times.

jeez, its not like these people have to look at the photos.

Blood Brothers--eh, i used to like em. cool to see live, though.
Daughters--kinda cool. not my style, but good energy.
Chromatics--cool. i liked their stuff. really strange. that's all i got to say about those bands...

Kill Me Tomorrow-- if you didn't appreciate them, you're just a dumb hipster with no taste in music. they rocked your face off. so good. anyway, all i came here for was to say, "hey-thanks for taking a picture of my arm!" (that's my fist in pic no. 10 of the KMT pics, thank you) but then i saw how underappreciated Kill Me Tomorrow is so i just felt i had to say something. oh well. i love them. if you don't, i really don't care because i get to keep them all to myself, and you nerds can listen to your angry nonsense. i hate cleveland kids, even though i am one.

scott, i think those are some damn fine pictures, people are assholes. I mean, here's a guy doing a nice thing and posting pictures and shit, and you guys are just bitching. It's not like you're paying to see them, you yo-yo's.

*sigh*. I see that you have no concept of composition/elements of a photograph. For one, you should never use flash at a concert. The lighting is almost always sufficient to get great shots. Secondly, that trail effect caused by lights is only the sign of your inability to keep your hand steady during the shot. There are shots with hands and heads in the way and the band members are nearly indistinguishable. When you do use your flash, the skintones are washed out and the members are left in unnatural poses. It looks as if you shot haphazardly without regard to composition or what you were shooting. Sadly, my camera didn't accompany me to the blood brothers show, but I have examples from others if you (and the others here who see the message board) to examine.

Yes all shots were taken by me, live, during the performance.
The bands include Reel Big Fish, A Perfect Kiss, the Lawrence Arms, and the Story Changes. All had lighting comparable to that of the Grog Shop. I'm just saying, please, if you are going to post band pictures, at least make them worth looking at.

I have no idea what I left out that makes you deem my photos "rotten." Again, let me see yours so I can learn.

The show itself was amazing Scott, but your pictures are rotten. Way to grab the setlist and get movies, but you seriously need to nitpick your shots more.

It's not cool to sift through 50 pictures to maybe find 1 good one (if that even exists)

also, the new dillinger escape plan sounds better than anything i've ever heard from them (bear in mind, that's just from a couple of snatches i heard from an advance demo at a record store)...less math-noise-grindcore

I have to agree with the person who said they didn't like 'Crimes.' That was the only song out of their entire set i didn't like too much..

Kill Me Tomarrow was fan-fucking-tastic. I loved their set, and they had some of the coolest shit ever in their songs.

Blood Brothers...wow, just wow. They were incredible and the energy was flowing like Niagra Falls.

All I know is the Blood Brothers were perfect last night in St. Louis. The energy in there was like nothing else I've ever seen. And in talking to the guys after the show, I've come to the conclusion that they're the nicest, most down to earth dudes ever. The new shit was amazing, I can't wait for the album. Daughters were great too, and Chromatics and Kill Me Tomorrow were interesting to hear, but I liked it. Great show.

Daughters have a mix performance live. I saw them in Iowa City and the singer seemed pretty bored, but in Omaha he got naked. That probably had to do with the drunk guitarist from Exam...

i saw this tour a few days ago in columbus at little brother's and the blood brothers were not only the only reason i drove 2 hours from cincinnati, but they were also the only good band. chromatics made my ears bleed, kill me tomorrow was lame and daughters? i laughed at that band.

dillinger escape plan(only not as talented) locust= daughters. yea they fucking straight ripped off dillinger's fucking style. way to go. and that guy fucking sucks at singing. and the only song i didnt like that the blood brothers played was "crimes"....what the hell, it was just toooooooo slow and there was none of their crazy screams...they just traded vocals back and forth. it wasnt too bad, but it just didnt sound too much like them.

Saw this in Brooklyn. Blood Bros. were absolutely amazing. One of the best sets I've seen all year. I'm still ticked that Daughters dropped off our stop, though...

Chromatics was weird. There was this one song where the wife (?) just kept yelling "witness!" and then "ha, ha!" into the mic as she played maracas.

The one thing all seven songs had in common, however, was that they were all unbelievably powerful and strong, both in the musicanship and the lyrical voice patterns.

Completely agreed. I wasn't sure if they could top BPIB, but they've seemingly outdone it.

I like the Grog Shop a lot, thus far. Good location, plenty of nearby parking, it's air-conditioned [unless there's a billion kids in there], clean bathroom, good PA, no barricades... Plus it's getting some pretty big shows for such a small room. I'm a fan.
