“Wow,” I thought to myself, looking at the album. “Bad band name, bad album name, lame cover art…well, I guess it can only get better, right?” Wrong.

This pile of wannabe 80s hardcore garbage is nearly unlistenable. The music is all mid-tempo and not that intense, but that’s not the worst part. The lyrics are so painful; they rhyme every line in the most lame way possible, and they are sung in either a monotone, or in direct relation to the guitar part. There is no melody. Now, not every band needs to be poppy; there are bands that make this work, but trust me this is not one of them. So, is this a band of really young kids who perhaps just haven’t had enough songwriting experience? No, My So-Called Band is three thirty-somethings who have been in bands forever and this current band since 1995. I guess they just like their style of punk, but frankly I don’t. Based on their influences shown on the cover (Ramones, Minor Threat, The Clash, Sex Pistols), they listen to some good stuff, but they just don’t have the songwriting themselves.

But I do like that their hearts are in the right place. They dedicated this album to a younger friend who had passed away, and they also have a song for Rachel Corrie, a peace worker killed standing in the way of a bulldozer about to destroy a Palestinian doctor’s home. But really the best thing about this CD is that is only a 20-minute EP.

Don’t quit your day jobs, fellows. Oh yeah, and please put down your middle fingers in all the band pictures, it’s neither cool nor shocking.

    My Score:

jesus christ greg. lighten up! you rip on a band and then get mad because people disagree with you. if you can't take criticism then don't be a critic. just because you don't like a band's music doesn't mean others don't. i first saw those guys in atlanta in 99 and i liked it. over the years i've seen their reviews in the village voice, razorcake, maximumrnr, nft(uk), under the volcano, dfbpunk, punk-it and other assorted zines and websites. believe me, your review is in the minority. by the way karl, greg's not just wrong about the music, he's wrong about you. you're not a cuntbag!

Boy Karl, you hit the nail on the head that time. Yes, I talk to my friends the exact same way I talk to a kindergarten class! But seriously, I have tried to cut back on cursing so that it doesnt slip out in school, probably a reason i stuck with idiot. I'll make an exception for you Karl: you're cuntbag. Happy?

    My Score:

sonwriting my man, when it all falls down, it's about songwriting...not that all the cheez psuedo punk bands are any good either...face it, there's alot of crap out there, expand your horizons, don't buy into a "punk scene" or any scene for that matter...pick up a fucking Beatles record, keep your roots, like the bands that meant something to you. Stop dressing like an asshole and move on.

    My Score:

nobody deserves to be run over by a bulldozer, kids don't deserve to be called idiots, this album doesn't suck. i can see where some people wouldn't like it. personally it reminds me of an older, more traditional punk and i prefer shit like that over the faux-core emo stuff and the "pop punk" crap that they are shoving down kids throats nowadays thanks to fuse and mtv2. just for the record, i found several more reviews of this band online and surprise they all were very positive.

    My Score:

Rachel Corrie was dumb. To hell with the palestinians... damn em to hell who care about their stupid ideals. Isreal beat their ass and now they have their country, move on losers!

    My Score:

This band DOES suck and Maximum R&R has favorites due to the bands that advertise their crap there so I wouldn't go by anything they say.

As for calling kids idiots, they need that. Maybe if you were called an idiot when you were a kid, you wouldn't listen to such bad music now.

there are no 15 year olds in the band. The most frightening thing about this review is that the guy who wrote it is an elementary school music teacher. poor kids!

the singer of this band has done ALOT for the scene in NC. He's helped put more than a handful of bands into the studio, released NC comps with money from his own pocket, numerous shows... people like this is what keeps punk going.
