There really can't be that high of a success rate for tribute albums. Either a band will try to cover an artist in their style thus making it sound redundant, or an artist will cover the song in their own style and fall flat on their face. But then, this is Sonic Youth. The difficulty in covering Sonic Youth and making it your own style would leave you with a departure in sound too far to continue calling it tributing. Thankfully, this handful of obscure bands (excuse me if my "Hip Noise-Art Outfits" list doesn't match yours) does it right.

One of the best tributes I've heard in a loooooong time! It's up there with the Marc Bolan tribute on Tzadik. When I saw "Jekyll", for a second I thought Jackyl was on this. This score is for making your video in front of K-Mart because they won't sell your CD. Imagine how many videos would be made in front of Wal-Mart if everybody did that today. wow what a helpful clip of sugarkane. oh wait... Sonic Youth's twenty minute version of Diamond Sea is my idea of Heaven. i'm really curious to hear what racebannon did with "death valley 69" I prefered brian's reviews with his Inagreendase name, as to just plain old "Brian". For some reason I don't like this band. It must be the fact that they're on a major and I'm afraid to lose my cred. Sonic Youth is mhhmm good. |
