(in my car, on the way to a local show)

steve (staring at cds): you got any atmosphere?

me: didn't bring any. you know aesop rock?

steve: heard of him... or it...

me: him

steve: ok

me: yeah it's kind of like atmosphere... except he doesn't rap about girls

steve: then it's not like atmosphere

me: fair enough

steve: put it in

me: ok

(starts playing)

steve: this is fucked up

me: yeah the lyrics are more abstract

steve: the beats suck, its like star wars or some shit

me: its kinda noisy, yeah, but thats def jux

steve: man fuck this

(ejects cd and puts in anti-flag)

If you're expecting rap about ladies ala Atmosphere and straight up beats with conventional samples and the same fucking snare pattern rappers have been using since 1983, then don't even listen to this shit. But if you want to listen to some rhymes with fucking amazing images, sweet hooks and futuristic backbeats, then pick it up. Bazookatooth isn't Aesop's best, though, and his LP Labor Days is probably the best one to pick up first. It's less noisy and the hooks are easier, although the lyrics are just as dense and poetic.

    My Score:

You know what the fuck I'm talking about. Everyone and their mom loves Atmosphere now. Aesop Rock and Mel Gibson and the Pants and even Sage Francis are now getting popular among these indie/punk kids. Fuck this. Sure, I think Sage has got some flow, but this shit isn't hip-hop. This is a distinct emulation of a genre. It's nice to listen to, but I've had enough of indie rock/punk white boys listening to other indie rock/punk white boys trying to rap and thinking that their music tastes are legit.

Besides, Alkaline Trio are the worst, most overrated band ever. Seriously. It's a FUCKING pop punk trio. It's nothing more thank Blink-182. Yeah, I said it. REPRESENT!

    -Jesse

Oh, to the guy who says he only listens to "underground hip-hop" - name dropping Slug like he's something different from Atmosphere doesn't make you cool. Being on Epitaph makes you not underground.

i thought he was a major highlight of vaudville villain but haven't heard anything else from him. if he regularly shows as much talent as he did on the vaughn track, i may have to check out "sin-o-matic"

btw, his new(er) release "blame it on the hooch" has some of the best cover art i've seen in a while.

The chorus of Makeshift Patriot is admittedly pretty godawful, but I thought the sublime backdrop and beats made the power of the lyrics stand out a tad more... I don't think it was really a song written with any emphasis on shaking your ass or bobbing your head...

...but man, that chorus is pretty terrible...

Haha, my roommate and I do an acoustic cover of it. It's... interesting, to say the least.

    My Score:

Yo prankish, though the lyrics may have been prophetic, the beat for "Makeshift Patriot" couldn't have been more uninteresting. He should've hit up DJ Premier or Pete Rock for a remix, then maybe people would've taken notice.

To the dude who mentioned the Killa Bees comp, yeah that disc was pretty tight, but that's mostly because it had a bunch of young hungry Wu-affiliates on the album and a range of producers.

Also, it's definitely no 36 Chambers, but the last Wu album "Iron Flag" went under a lot of peoples' radars. It had a few bangers worth checking for on it (Rules, Uzi (Pinky Ring)). Or maybe they just seemed good because "The W" was so fucking bad.

Posted by prankish on 2004-09-23 16:41:20
    My Score:

Actually my comment was directed at Jesse, who hints at the "hip new trend of liking hip hop" and then goes on to berate Aesop. Is this review garbage? Yes. But that has nothing to do with labeling fans of music you don't appreciate as mere trend whores.

You're correct in saying I sound angry, because the ignorance of the children labeling eachother every chance they get starts to weigh you down over time. It's gotten to the point that liking anything; anything at all, ever, in the history of things to like is nothing more than latching on to a trend. Hell, even if you like the same things as the person accusing you of being trendy, you obviously only like them because you're copying them to be cool. There's no plausible way to appreciate music because it's GOOD, that right is reserved for the most pathetically pretentious and elitist amongst us.

    My Score:

I love Aesop Rock. I love Bazooka Tooth.

Yes, I am a backpacker when it comes to hip-hop (for those who don't know - a backpacker is someone who only listens to underground hip-hop, sometimes used negatively). This record takes a few listens to get a feel for. After listening to 'Labour' over and over, 'Bazooka Tooth' took some getting use to. The flow and beats seem really illogical until you get a hang of what he's trying to do. And when you do figure it out - shit, it's awesome.

The highlight of the record is 'The Greatest Pac-Man Victory', which is about LSD and the end of Aes' drug useage. He spits a verse in which each word starts with the letters L then S then D. Example 'Lazy Summer Days Like Some Decript Land Shark ...'. It's so rad.

If you're looking to get into this type of rap (which I think you totally should, there's some real talent here), look into: Slug, Sage Francis, Louis Logic, MF Doom, Ill Bill, Cunninlynguists, Tonedeff, Extended Famm, Demigodz, Company Flow, 7L & Esoteric ...

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, September 23, 2004 at 2:34 PM (EDT)
    My Score:

    to the comment below:

who are you directing your comment to? the majority of negative comments have been directed at the review itself and not the album. if i were you, i would wait until someone actually calls you or anyone else "trendy" before you go around accusing people of it. i'm surprised you have a user name, as that means you must come to the site a lot. your views on "punks" and "poseurs" would normally come from someone who doesn't know what they're talking about, and doesn't go to a "punk" site enough to go through the trouble of getting a username. it seems like you have a lot of anger, i'd just try redirecting it somewhere else. that's all.

Posted by prankish on 2004-09-23 14:02:20
    My Score:

Wow, I love the "punk" mentality:

"If you like something I don't, then you're just doing it to be trendy."

God fucking forbid someone likes hip hop! What a fucking poseur they must be! Seems to me that YOU'RE the only one concerned with trends here... and it's a god damn shame that you'd let that dictate what you listen to, much less try and apply that standard to other people.

Not Aesop's best album, though still a good listen... and while Wu Tang is up on my favorites list, I still think the current "oh so trendy" Aesop/Sage Francis/Cannibal Ox generation of hip hop has some more interesting things to say.

    Sage Francis - Makeshift Patriot

Was written a month after September 11th, and the lyrics are a hauntingly accurate satire of the direction of things to come... even when it was practically sacreligious to say something bad about America, he wrote a song questioning Sept. 11th before it was "trendy" to question it... so hey maybe you'll like it.

Jesse, your comment about the Wu might have been relevant about 6 years ago, but now the only ones still holding it down are Ghost & GZA. Meth is a fuckin joke (Tical 0 wasn't even worth the time it took to download), Deck rhymes like fire but fell flat on his face with that last album, U-God hates everybodyelse in the clan now, RZA lost his beatmaking touch a while ago, and Raekwon is still trying to ride off the Cuban Linx rep while making mediocre records. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Don't think I'm saying Aesop is any better, though. I applaud him for being different, but I can't stand this CD. Give me some Gang Starr or Justus League over this shit anyday.

I agree. It's unfortunate that this review had to be posted. At first, I was a little excited to see an Aesop Rock review posted on the site. But considering how long ago Bazooka Tooth came out and how this record has presumably grown on most people by now despite the contrast in production style from the last one, I still wasn't expecting a whole lot in terms of groundbreaking material in this review. Nonetheless, I still expected more than this thoughtless entry. In all fairness to the reviewer, no one else submitted anything and there's been ample time so I guess we can't really complain. Anways, a Madvillain review might be nice. But in all honesty, anyone requesting a Madvillain review already has the disc, already knows how good it is and really doesn't need anyone else to tell you that. .
