Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Well, they tried.

Some will say that it’s “cool to hate on Senses Fail”. I mean, their careers started conventionally enough by today’s screamo/hardcore/whatever standards. Their debut ep From the Depths of Dreams was a decent showing, suggesting that this band could crank out some fairly entertaining, energetic, and catchy songs. Thanks to high internet sales and rigorous touring, they did quite well for themselves, achieving sales of over 120,000, and solidifying a dedicated fan base. But then came the drama, the label wars (does that really say Vagrant/Drive-Thru?!), the trash talking, and the premature leakage of an already-delayed album that was rumored to be “disappointing” to label execs. A lot of us love to eat that kind of stuff up, and place negative (and often violent) feelings upon the band based on all this extraneous stuff alone. Come on guys, this is just a band trying to do what they love. All the label nonsense and other fourth grade shenanigans are irrelevant. This is a band. They make music.

It’s just too bad that the music they make is boring as hell.

Let It Enfold You isn’t all that different from their EP, but the good things got worse and the bad things got ridiculous. None of the songs escape the very tired formula of modern screamo: spiraling guitars, occasional double-bass drum fills, and unimaginative vocal melodies doom potentially interesting tracks such as “Bite to Break Skin” and “Tie Her Down”. Someone once said that it’s hard to scream and not sound stupid, and it’s painfully evident throughout, as “You’re Cute When You Scream” and “Rum is for Drinking, Not for Burning” contain several almost laugh-worthy moments. While Buddy’s lead vocals have improved overall as far as pitch and accuracy are concerned, it’s hard to imagine how the intro to “NJ Falls into the Atlantic” and “Irony of Dying on Your Birthday” were seen as a good idea by anyone involved. The obligatory imagery of violence, blood, pain and the like isn’t left out either. There are no surprises here, folks.

Some of the inherent catchiness of the EP shows up every once in a while, making “Buried A Lie” and “Let It Enfold You” the few bright spots on a album chock full of similar sounding songs. At the very least, Senses Fail keep the tempo mostly upbeat, and spare us any overblown string sections or moog lines.

When it comes right down to it, it doesn’t really matter if you hate the labels that put this out or you heard from a friend of a friend that Buddy made fun of someone you don’t know. The bottom line is that this album will be remembered for being unmemorable. Chances are you already know if you’re going to like this, and it’s going to sell like flan regardless, but if you’re looking for anything superior to the EP, you’re not going to find it here.

Pretty good cd, especially considering a lot of the crap thats being cranked out these days. I can't believe people give this cd 2 stars and fucking Napalm Death gets 5. Lmao napalm death barely cuts it as music and i AM A METAL HEAD!!! i guess its all perspective.

What the hell is it with all the Hawthorn Height haters?

But that's any time and review comment (isn't it?)

Senses Fail has a great "Let it Enfold You" CD. Actually if it wasn't for them I wouldn't lke punk.

My next door neighbor got me hooked on these guys and The Used, Hawthorne Heights, Smile Empty Soul, and Early November. From then on I've loved Punk.

For those who dis, take a minute of time and think about how hard bands work to give you music that you bitch and rave about. I swear, I've heard more men on Punknews.org bitch about punk and heavy screaming than women.

Posted by BooFace on 2005-11-16 10:49:36

Senses Fail is one of my all time favorite bands
yes- the lyrics may be depressing
but its the kind of music that gets you through your day
i couldnt live with out 'em

    Posted by Angel-Jin on 2005-09-22 13:43:24
    My Score:

Okay, once again. It seems like alot of the people remaining anonymous and reviewing these CD's don't even like that particular genre of music. Which in any case, is flat-out ridiculous.

Senses Fail isn't really the average screamo band. Their music is way different. Screamo, as is apparent in the name, is like Dashboard Confessional except with, you know, lots of yelling. This isn't really screamo. Their music isn't about how the love of their life dropped them on their ass and now they write sappy songs about it. Their music has more of a hard hit compared to others like Silverstein and Hawthorne Heights. The message in their songs might convey the sappy lost romance theme, but not as much as alot of the Victory family does.

Senses Fail is a great band. I will say that. Their sound is just...different. It's a predictable kind of different, but it's different nonetheless, and that's rare in this day and age.

Senses fail are a great band. They talk about death so much though. Very depressing lyrics, yet the hooks are great. I still like the last album much more. If you want a good laugh watch the dvd that comes with the cd (not if your 10 and you have your parents there with you). Over all I give this sophmore cd a.......................8. I guess they all have sophmore slumps some times. The albums good but the last one (From The Depth of Dreams) is great ill give that a 10 any time. I hope they come out with a new 10 worthy album sometime. Lol Dans drums sound great. What are they C&C?

It only got a 7. Senses fail is not beautiful. They mix the same old, same old screaming overing over generic riffs. You are an idiot to say they are the first of their kind, unless you believe evertyhing ap says.

    My Score:

It's really funny how original most of the anonymous posters get.

Anyway, it's quite apparent that alot of people aren't ready for Senses Fail's music. Not many bands can pull off the agressive but yet beautiful sound and lyrics but seriously...Senses Fail gives me shivers. I will totally admit that I don't listen to them for their talent but they just created something amazing. I don't care if people don't respect my opinion, I listen to my music for me. I would also like to add that I'm listening to Hawthorne Heights as I'm writting this.

Oh, and after reading TheMarc's review and then glancing at his page I thought it was truely hilarious to see Yellowcard on his favourite albums list (but that's a new rant entirely).

It sounds like your mind was made up about these guys before you even listened to the CD, who cares what label they are on? as long as they bring the great music, which they did then I dont care if they are on Jive (ok mabye i do care about Jive...bad example)

    Posted by md40_07 on 2005-07-06 11:05:53

These really good, From songs like Let It Enfold You to The Irony of Dying On Your Birthday they have a wide variety of songs, i admit HH doesn't have a variety at ALL, but these guys can do a song without screaming then play a song that is even better than Hawthorne Heights

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks their music is trash. Some of the WORST lyrics I've heard. I'm not usually one for hating on music but I can't get past their obsession with suicide and death. I mean atleast some bands with weak lyrical content make up for it with energy or good muscianship, not with Senses Fail they try to make up for it with song names... and fail miserably.

Once upon a time, in the city of Los Angeles...
"Marty, Marty listen to me. Bring me something the kids will cry for.
Get out there, and get us stoked!"

Meet Marty, major label A&R scout, forty years old, gut hanginh out.
Red Ferrari, Marty livinh in L.A. bumps another line to get through the day.
Dumped by his girl, he paid for her liposuction,
His friends call him "Money", in his introduction.
And Marty knows nothing but claims to know it all,
Lose the flat screen TV if he drops the ball.
You're as good as your last hit, find the next big thing.
If he doesn't bring the bling, his cell phone won't ring.
What's the trend, what's new? What's a label scout to do? Office life, Marty 11:32.
The label pres. calls and yells, "Sign more emo!"
How about screamo? "If it sells, sign Nemo,"
"We're down 2%, and BMG knows,
My Daughter likes Dashboard, so get me one of those!"
He checks AP.net, the Scout and more,
yelling band names to his assistant through the door.
The kids like this, who cares if it's great?
So he signs a band called Hearts that Hate.

    "Marty... we've got a hit."

Cry tonight. My hands around your hands.
I won't let you die tonight.
Cry tonight. My heart's in your hands.
    I won't let you...

Hearts that Hate, Marty goes to their show, up in the club and here we go.
Marty sees a girl in a Simple Plan shirt with a Senses Fail boy, thatÕll never work.
He finds his label friends in the corner they huddle,
An emo cattle auction, they penetrate the bubble.
They talk about Victory and signing TBS,
Dissing the same bands they just tried to impress.
So the lights go down, the crowd starts to scream,
Hearts that Hate have hit the scene.
Blake on vocals, and lead guitar,
He does a backflip, "Look how different we are!"
They show up at the studio to record it,
A TRL, Billboard Modern Rock hit.
They auto-tune Blake, but he can't tell.
He says, "I've got perfect pitch, damn I sing well."
ProTools, Logic, cut, copy, paste, quantized solos and quantized bass.
Signed, sealed, deliver and sent, across the U.S. and the single went...

Cry tonight. My hands around your hands.
I won't let you die tonight.
Cry tonight. My heart's in your hands.
    I won't let you DIE

Momentum builds, but it all caves in.
Industrial comes back, the pres. needs a NIN.
Marty finds a new band called "Fetal Coil"
And Hearts that Hate try to keep their fans loyal.
They re-work their sound for album number two,
As "Machines of Hate," but their career is through.
They break up and work pushing mops and brooms,
Blake gives guitar lessons in his living room.
Blake gives guitar lessons in his living room,
Blake gives guitar lessons in his living room.

"Can you teach me track five Mr. Blake?"
"Hey, I wrote that song and it goes like this!"

Cry tonight. My hands around your hands.
I won't let you die tonight.
    My Hearts In Your Hands.
    I won't Let you DIE
    Cry Tonight (Die)
    My Hearts In Your Hands.
    I Won't Let You Die
    Tonight. (Die)
    My Hearts In Your Hands.

i've listened to the album, actually...i own the album. and its not that great. almost all of the songs sound the same, the singer sounds like a sick chicken when he screams, and for the most part, the lyrics are cheesy. 'so let me take this medicine to quench my love for violent things'- what the fuck?! these people are demented.

i will be one of the first to tell you that i liked the EP, but the full length is musical garbage. its just like the new used cd. they had a chance to make an album anyway they wanted it because of the huge fanbase that loves(but should hate almost) everything they produce(just like the used). but they opted for (just like the used) musical crap! its banal, the lyrics are horrible, and to top it off it just plain sucks(just like the new USED cd!). this will be on the top of the used cd bin at my local record store, and i'll walk out with the new A Perfect Murder, new Hot Water Music, or anything with talent!

All of you ignorant enough to abuse this album without listening to it truley are dickheads....
However if you gave it a go and its not your cup of tea fair enough...

This is really good however, i am still loving their ep more...

face it man, some of us DO hate it based on giving it a chance. I have heard the ep straight through, multiple times. I've seen them live. I hate them. Its a cheesy watered down version of Thursday and Thrice, w/ the phoniest , corniest violent imagery lyrics ever. Like Matt Skiba or Chris Connely if they had no talent and were 18 year old suburban jersey kids listening to 'full collapse' over and over and over again and getting that scream/sing thing down. this, matchbook romance, story of the year, silverstein and hawthorn hights are just little boys w/ no clue about punk rock or emo, making a trendy band and copying their fav. artists. good thing screamo is on the outs.

Idon't understand this notion that every band like this has to add some amazing new ingredient to the genre of music they play. Face it, this type of music is popular now, and a lot of bands that have similar sounds and styles are gonna come around and be successful or at least get their albums out, and there's nothing wrong with that. If they do it well, they do it well, simple as that. I knew exactly how this review would be before I even read it. Somebody is just gonna go on about how they the band does the same old this and the same old that. This is a pretty enjoyable CD, and reviewing it by spewing off all the things you think are cliche' about it is just stupid.

Max Payne is pretty damn good. But not at the full $60 new price. Now that the original is very cheap and the sequel has lowered in price.... they are pretty fantastic games... and I don't even like that genre that much.

I'm not sure about this whole "Sense Fail" genre. I saw them on Jimmy Kimmel and that was my first time seeing/hearing them, but the sound was way too awful for me to be able to blame them (although I have a feeling like they suck). The audio was just such poor quality, you could barely hear anything.

I don't know who this band is, but that's the worst album art I've seen in a long, long time

    "um, is screamo still "in"?

    serious question btw."

it's on its way out. is indie rock replacing it or did it replace indie? i'm unsure. (not that i'm dissing indie rock as a genre, just commenting on it's relative status as being "in")

I think you put a 3 for the score instead of a 1 for your score. maybe you should fix it.

because of this band, everyone i know bursts out and starts singing "187" when they find out what my address is.

it doesn't help that they bore me.

i remember the first time i saw senses fail, they played a show with TBS and Matchbook Romance (the getaway at the time) anyways, i never seen someone try as hard as buddy to act like Adam from TBS. Adam is bad enough, but buddy took the cake with his hair pulling fake crying and rolling on the ground. so so bad
