Published on November 2nd 2004

I'll be the first to admit - this is almost a pointless review. Chances are that if you're reading this, you've already made up your mind on whether you hate, love, or carry no leaning opinion towards the once-East-Bay-hardcore-punk-outfit-turned-gothic-rockers AFI. So where does their Nitro Records perspective leave you?

Pretty much out of the psychographic.

Purely intended as a proper introduction to fans first associated with AFI from their 2003 major label debut full-length, Sing The Sorrow, AFI's self-titled retrospective album chronicles the band's back catalog, taking cuts from the band's five full-lengths and two EPs, and even throws in a couple rare tracks: "A Winter's Tale" comes from the Days Of The Phoenix single, "Lower It" from the vinyl version of Black Sails In The Sunset, and "Rolling Balls" and "Who Said You Could Touch Me?," both from the vinyl version of Very Proud Of Ya. The rest of the album comes from the readily available compact discs in stores everywhere.

For these said new fans, it's a nice sampler of material that serves well for the ones looking to reap the benefits of the band's back catalog. The sequencing is mostly chronological, save for the twelfth of fiteen tracks, 1995's "I Wanna Get A Mohawk." "The Lost Souls" and "The Days Of The Phoenix" are widely regarded as two of the best tracks from The Art Of Drowning (hopefully not to the point where these listeners have previously heard them), and their inclusion here is appropriate. The tracks from the two EPs are nice surprises, and the fact that song lengths were taken into account when including older material are appreciative (the vinyl version of Very Proud Of Ya alone has four tracks).

For the rest of the current fans, it basically serves as a recommended mix tape of older material, one you could likely collaborate from your own recordings. The vinyl-only rare tracks are appetizing bites that could move a few copies from vinyl-straying fans looking for rarer material, but for the most part, it's doubtful many of them would be big on what's essentially to them a fifteen-song greatest hits compilation devoid of AFI's newest effort.

    My Score:

Ah... Wow, Dexter Holland and his punk-gone-alternative "let's copy everything that everyone else is doing in the rock scene right now" band known only as "The Offspring" must not be rolling in the cash like they used to... This is like, the most obvious sign of desperation on Nitro Records' behalf. Anywho... I would just like to say I'm a big fan of the punk scene... I drum and play bass to bands such as The Exploited, The U.K. Subs, old-school Misfits, the Damned, A Global Threat, the Unseen and the Ramones on a daily basis, and I'll be the first one to tell you that AFI has never been a punk rock band. But there's something about AFI that still makes their confused genre shit worth while - They've never been afraid to change and do what they want to do instead of what their fans want them to do. I can just imagine some stupid 12 year-old fat kid wearing a spike bracelet and a new found glory shirt after seeing a commercial for AFI's new album... "Ooohh nooo!!! They want to make more money while still making the kind of music that THEY want to make! How HORRIBLE, those stupid sell-outs! It's bad to be on TV 'cause I'm a punk rocker! Anarchy! Tee hee!" Psh, give me a goddamn break. Who said they were punk in the first place? Certainly not AFI themselves - They've always referred to themselves as post-hardcore and east-bay hardcore... The only reason they're labeled as punk is because of the scene they were formed in and the fact that they were signed to Nitro by that dumb fuck Dexter. By the way - I'm old enough to vote and I most certainly didn't vote for Bush though I'm an AFI fan... How ironic :-) But yeah this album is not worth a cent guys. 9 times outta 10 the only people that are going to buy this album are the zit-faced MTV fanatic-kids that saw AFI on there one day and decided they would pick them up as their favorite band for a month or so and become "punk rockers" so they could be "different" (all three thousand of them or so...), and they won't even see the real beauty of AFI's career or even give them the respect they've earned as musicians. Nitro was one of my favorite record labels until I saw this sack of bullshit released. Those bastards are hard up for money and I think it was low that they pulled that shit on AFI.

    LOOKING FORWARD
To any of our fans who may have bought Nitro Records' AFI anthology, we

would like you to know that the decision to create this compilation

was made solely by Nitro Records. While we are extremely proud of our body of work over the years, we would like you to know it was not the band's decision to compile, create or promote a "retrospective" at this point in our career. If you should enjoy it or hear something you've been unable to find elsewhere then great, but please understand it was conceived and sold without our input. We are much more focused on creating our new record for our fans and seeing you all on tour next year.

this is taken from the official AFI site.

i remember going to see a band called the force play. it was an awsome show. it took place in the basement of the veterans hall in santa cruz. the bass player from afi was the bass player for the force. it was the forces last show. i remember seeing hunter get jumped and piled on by a punch of punkers. i saw afi play back in santa cruz years back when they were playing clubs it was great. yeah they sold out now and adopted a new sound. i like their new sound but it seems like the good old afi days are gone. no more raw hardcore representing berkley style sound.
