Reviews

If anarchy and total chaos were a sound, Greg Ginn would be the man behind it. That's the feeling I got after listening to my first plunge into Greg Ginn's solo output. No matter how some of you may feel about the man himself, you can't deny that he is one unique and intense guitarist.

Immediately upon listening to this album you will know it's Greg Ginn, with that classic feedback and off-the-wall playing that are strictly his own. Musically, the album lies somewhere in between Black Flag's Damaged and My War material, as the songs are very fast and visceral, but contain a lot of heavy bass. The vocals are, on the other hand, more reminiscent of something like Nausea, as it's very violent and loud.

To get an idea of the album's lyrical content, not much is needed other than to state the song titles: "Yes Officer," "Short Fuse" or my personal favorite, "Pig Mother Fucker," the last of which sounds as if it could have come directly off a Flag album, as the playing is mindblowing and the vocals are insane. Lyrically, the song is pretty self-explanatory with lyrics like "Pig mother fucker, he goes home and beats his life" / "Pig mother fucker, Pig, Coward, Pig" and so on. It's really effective and probably one of the best L.A.P.D. protest songs ever made.

The album isn't all thrash and chaos though, as songs like "Hard Thing" and "Torn" are very jazzy, bluesy and heavy, which should come as no surprise to those familiar with Ginn's work. Songs like "Nightmares" and "PF Flyer" are, on the other hand, very similiar to the Flag's more experimental songs (i.e. "You're Not Evil" or "Black Love"), with creepy screams and solos creeping in from behind the chaos.

After listening to this album you will instantly understand why, without Greg Ginn, Black Flag just wouldn't have even been a tenth as intense. The man is gifted at supplying the world with total musical anarchy and it's just a shame that he couldn't bring it to the Black Flag "reunion" last year. If you like the Flag, buy this immediately, it's similar to early and mid-era Flag, and suprisingly not much like Family Man or Process...at all.

And for the record, I never said "Pig MF" lyrics were "deep" or "insightful". They are simple, straight and get to the point...which isn't always a bad thing, kind of like THE RAMONES.

Hey guys....say what you want.....I really dig this record and I stand by my review. It's total chaos in classic Greg Ginn fashion- it's not for everyone, but it works for me. This record makes me wanna break everything in sight, in a good way lol.

Did anyone ever notice that the NOFX song "Quart in Session" and "Franco-Unamerican" sound EXACTLY THE SAME! even with the stupid lil breakdown at the end.

I ordered a bunch of stuff from SST a few years ago and they sent me this and a couple more free cds, I guess just because they're nice. It's actually really good. Yeah, his vocals aren't any stretch of good but they work on some songs.

    My Score:

I've no issue with the lyrics, not everybody can write like Blake from Jawbreaker, and not everybody is meant to. I agree, poetic lyrics or anything of the sort would sound forced and contrived on this album, but that's not where it's at fault. I just don't agree with this being a perfect record.

Being best of collections do not detract from the importance of the music. And that Dr Dre record defined gangsta rap, Ginn isn't treading any ground that's all that new here.

"I don't know, it's got to be a god damn incredible album. Just a few I'd probably say deserve tens:

Rites Of Spring - End On End
Jawbreaker - 24 Hour Revenge Therapy
    Dr Dre - The Chronic
    Joy Division - Substance
Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True
    Descendents - Somery
    Saetia - A Retrospective"

And this is seminal for the fact that most hardcore guitarists go on to either tone it down or suck, and Ginn still rocks on this album. People were expecting Gone or October Faction, but he gave them stuff that made his old band look tame.

Atonal, yet constructed noise that's not TRYING to be artsy.

The lyrics, as the guy below me said, aren't the real focus. That's like listening to a Ramones album and saying "well, the music's cool, but why are all of the songs funny?"... If Greg had sang some introverted post-artcore yes-wave crap, it would have sounded forced and dishonest.

Also, "Somery" and "Substance" are nothing more than best-ofs/singles collections... And you rank a Dr. Dre solo record above this... Sorry, you lose.

Here's the thought from an idiot:
I have understood that you're thinking Greg Ginn is a great guitar player and I agree. But I still think that this album isn't a keystone of punk or music as you pretend. It lacks something: Damaged is far better than this album in matter of chaos and in matter of guitar virtuosity I think that both Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr have more to offer.
Even if it's a good record, there's a lot of better album from the American indie underground scene to buy before this one.

    My Score:

To the idiots who don't understand my review.......you don't listen to a Greg Ginn album for the lyrics...he keeps his lyrics simple and to the point, what's the point in going all out on lyrics when the outcome is exactly the same? The reason you listen to a Greg Ginn record is primarily for the absolutely maniacal guitar playing....Black Flag and Greg Ginn created the most insane and umcompromising music in the history of music...no record (other than Damaged or In My Head) can beat this record in terms of sheer chaos and insanity. It blows the shit out of all the "hard" bands which rely on chuggy riffs and growled vocals to get by. As far as Black Flag goes, albums like My War and Loose Nut basically "weeded out" all the fake ass punkers who listened to Black Flag...in my opinion "Loose Nut" is the perfect punk rock album- sarcastic, angry, serious, and darkly humorous all at once.

Way to suck off Greg Ginn...honestly, the reviewer must be 11..."Die Pig! You kick you dog!! Fuck Pigs!" is the best protest song of the LAPD? Listen to 'God is a Bullet' by Concrete Blonde, they actually tried on their song.

You must love Leftover Crack too, huh?

You probably don't even agree with most of those, but if nothing else the arguement can be made that those are seminal releases for their respective genre. The same can't be said here. It's a good cd, but there are holes. That's all I'm saying.

Nope, I've never listened to Black Flag before, nor do I intend to. Punk isn't really my genre---yes, I do enjoy a few dozen new-school bands in the vein of Avail, Dillinger Four, and Paint It Black, but my honest interest lies in indie rock, which is generously covered and coveted on this site.

I'm not bashing Greg Ginn, nor his obvious contribuitions to music, but I've heard this album, and what I have heard is not worthy to be deemed 'perfect,' as a 10 star score would reflect.

This is a music message board. If you're going to admit that you love Alexisonfire, then bash the bands that invented their style of music, be prepared for humiliation.

They started in '77 (though sometimes people say '76, if they were around that early they must not have played any shows), and that was when punk rock had already been popularized.

First wave of punk was just free-minded rock. The Pistols, The Ramones, The Saints, The Damned, etc. all started in 74/75... And they were influenced by proto-punk/rock/whatever experimental music there was... The second wave of punk (which was the entire LA scene with the exceptions of The Screamers, The Weirdos, The Zeros, Germs, and X) was punk rock consciously influenced by other punk.

I think BF bridged the gap between punk and hardcore.

greg ginn did some really great stuff, both musically and in putting out great records with sst and having black flag open up the doors for the underground-touring circuit we appreciate today. but that has never made a good solo record.
