If anarchy and total chaos were a sound, Greg Ginn would be the man behind it. That's the feeling I got after listening to my first plunge into Greg Ginn's solo output. No matter how some of you may feel about the man himself, you can't deny that he is one unique and intense guitarist.

And for the record, I never said "Pig MF" lyrics were "deep" or "insightful". They are simple, straight and get to the point...which isn't always a bad thing, kind of like THE RAMONES. Hey guys....say what you want.....I really dig this record and I stand by my review. It's total chaos in classic Greg Ginn fashion- it's not for everyone, but it works for me. This record makes me wanna break everything in sight, in a good way lol. Did anyone ever notice that the NOFX song "Quart in Session" and "Franco-Unamerican" sound EXACTLY THE SAME! even with the stupid lil breakdown at the end. I ordered a bunch of stuff from SST a few years ago and they sent me this and a couple more free cds, I guess just because they're nice. It's actually really good. Yeah, his vocals aren't any stretch of good but they work on some songs. Who the fuck are the Streets? I think we all know that it was the Streets who really invented gangsta rap. I love clicking onto a thread for a punk record review and seeing people debating NWA / Dr. Dre. I fucking love the internet.
NWA, anyone? That's how Dre helped invent gangsta rap...
I'm a fucking retard that posts on a punk website even though I don't like the music on the site. Plus, my dog just finished on my leg, again. This score is for Jawbreaker. "And that Dr Dre record defined gangsta rap, Ginn isn't treading any ground that's all that new here." sfbarker: whats wrong with leftover crack? I've no issue with the lyrics, not everybody can write like Blake from Jawbreaker, and not everybody is meant to. I agree, poetic lyrics or anything of the sort would sound forced and contrived on this album, but that's not where it's at fault. I just don't agree with this being a perfect record. "I don't know, it's got to be a god damn incredible album. Just a few I'd probably say deserve tens: Here's the thought from an idiot: To the idiots who don't understand my review.......you don't listen to a Greg Ginn album for the lyrics...he keeps his lyrics simple and to the point, what's the point in going all out on lyrics when the outcome is exactly the same? The reason you listen to a Greg Ginn record is primarily for the absolutely maniacal guitar playing....Black Flag and Greg Ginn created the most insane and umcompromising music in the history of music...no record (other than Damaged or In My Head) can beat this record in terms of sheer chaos and insanity. It blows the shit out of all the "hard" bands which rely on chuggy riffs and growled vocals to get by. As far as Black Flag goes, albums like My War and Loose Nut basically "weeded out" all the fake ass punkers who listened to Black Flag...in my opinion "Loose Nut" is the perfect punk rock album- sarcastic, angry, serious, and darkly humorous all at once. If a reviewer really enjoys an album that much, then I see no problem with them giving it a ten. That's what I give out scores for, enjoyment, not how well it compares to Zen Arcade. "Don't come here to bash the most original/talented guitarist to emerge from second wave US punk " Way to suck off Greg Ginn...honestly, the reviewer must be 11..."Die Pig! You kick you dog!! Fuck Pigs!" is the best protest song of the LAPD? Listen to 'God is a Bullet' by Concrete Blonde, they actually tried on their song. I don't know, it's got to be a god damn incredible album. Just a few I'd probably say deserve tens: "I hope that was a joke Chinatown." I bought this used the other day and threw it away when i got home cause it sucked major ass. I'm not a big Greg Ginn fan, but I'd buy this in a second if it would somehow convince SST to remaster their back catalog. Yeah, god forbid people see music for what it is instead of something to be weighed on a scale... Or that they have the honest opinion that this is a perfect album... I'm not bashing Greg Ginn, nor his obvious contribuitions to music, but I've heard this album, and what I have heard is not worthy to be deemed 'perfect,' as a 10 star score would reflect. "I have actually heard this album, BSD, and it's not a 10. Let's jump to some more conclusions, okay? I hope that was a joke Chinatown. Greg Ginn is a prick & his solo shit shines as bright as a cave. Fuck him, he's a flesh twinkie. This album isn't worthy of a 10 based on its lyrical content alone. Cop bashing is fun, but please, put some substance and creativity into it! I have actually heard this album, BSD, and it's not a 10. Let's jump to some more conclusions, okay? got it. They started in '77 (though sometimes people say '76, if they were around that early they must not have played any shows), and that was when punk rock had already been popularized. i know black flag started in 78 or so, right? so wouldn't they ALSO be part of the 1st wave of punk? that's what i heard someone (i think mike ness or jello) say, that black flag bridged the gap between the 1st and 2nd wave which you can definitely see why as keith morris era flag sounds like the sex pistols on speed. "I'm so sick of not perfect albums getting 10's. from what i've heard, the black flag reunion he did last year was a total joke. he got to feed those cats some gourmet shit. henry and keith's rise above tour however was fucking amazing. greg ginn did some really great stuff, both musically and in putting out great records with sst and having black flag open up the doors for the underground-touring circuit we appreciate today. but that has never made a good solo record. EVER. without the flag to reign in his more wanky tendencies (and they were not completely successful at doing that towards the end) he just churns out straight crap. his soloing style gets old very very fast. That Black Flag show was the shittiest piece of shit ever! most influential hardcore/punk guitarist of all time? I'm so sick of not perfect albums getting 10's. Yeah, but his vocals suck. |
