Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

It’s a beautiful thing when a good band turns to great; when they put out an album that ends all skepticism concerning the band and turns everyone’s head. Such is the case with Comeback Kid’s spectacular sophomore effort, Wake The Dead.

The band’s passion-filled debut, Turn It Around, put this band near the forefront of the straight edge hardcore movement, with its breakneck speeds and heart-stomping breakdowns. Still, people argued that it was a bit too generic for comfort, and that the album’s songs blended into one another after five songs, making for a rather boring listen after ten minutes. Now, I don’t know if the band took those comments to heart, but Wake The Dead has remedied any problems the band has had in the past and has turned out to be a flawless effort from a band who will no doubt be name-dropped as one of the most elite bands in hardcore after this release.

Where Turn It Around failed, Wake The Deaad excels; each song is rather distinct, not in the fact that there are a lot of “departures” to be found, but that each song has its own identity and its own parts that are unique to the song. Also, the length of the album has been cut short by four tracks, from fifteen to eleven, making for a more concise (but no less intense) listen. Lastly, the production is as in-your-face as a hardcore album could sound, making the move to Victory Records (I know, we all groaned when we heard it) a seemingly helpful move. Simply put, Wake The Dead sounds as amazing as the music is. The vocals are cleaner, the drums are more effective, and the gang vocals sound fuller. Check the end of the title track for proof; it’s the best sing-along since Bane’s “Can We Start Again.”

Comeback Kid’s music has also taken a turn towards the more punk rock-influenced hardcore spectrum, exchanging breakdowns for sheer speed and surprisingly more melodic (but no less hard-hitting) riffs. In fact, there’s almost nary a breakdown to be found here; you’ve got your typical slower-paced rhythms to get the kids stomping, but nothing as earth-shattering as the end of, say, “All In A Year,” the opener from the band’s debut. The most amazing part is that you will not even notice; the songs are that good. Besides, you can still get all of the breakdown mayhem found on their debut if you see them live, which I highly consider, for they’re currently on the straight edge hardcore tour of a lifetime, opening for Bane and With Honor.

There’s also nothing like listening to an album for the first time and being ripped in half by an amazing album opener; “False Idols Fall” is the quintessential hardcore anthem. It’s got speed, power, gang vocals, and a powerful closing, and all you can do after the song is over is smile because it was just so absolutely perfect. I can’t remember the last hardcore song that made me smile. From the opening, to the insane gang vocals of “Wake The Dead,” to the anthemic and soon-to-be crowd favorite “Partners In Crime,” to the technicality of “Bright Lights Keep Shining,” you’re left in awe at how good this band sounds. Scott Wade’s vocals are top-notch and unbelievably charismatic, and the guitar work is spectacular, not for its technicality and hard-to-play parts, but just for making some of the best hardcore riffs I’ve ever heard. Every song is excellent, and, as stated before, each has its own identity, something that is hard to come by in recent years with hardcore music.

This is a hands down ten out of ten. I’ve heard very few albums that have knocked me on my ass past a month’s worth of listening, but Wake The Dead has done it. This is one hell of musical accomplishment, and is 100% deserving of a perfect rating. Pick this up TODAY.

    Great album.

Does anyone else's vinyl skip like .5 seconds of the chorus in Partners in Crime near the end. he's like "noth-esle matters" I bought another LP because i thought there was something wrong with mine but the same thing happened.

    My Score:

"Wake the Dead" is an amazing song. One of the bests ever. "Partners In Crime," "False Idols Fall," and "The Trouble I Love" are all really, really good.

Too bad there's the occasional meat-head hardcore part on some of the songs. It's the only thing keeping this album from being as amazing as it could be.

I thought this album was pretty amazing until I finally heard Turn it Around. I'd guess its only about as half as good as TiA, although its still great. I'm worried signing to Victory may've been a mistake.

    My Score:

Absolutely nothing original on this. To call this great is an absolute to all the great hardcore bands throughout history. I heard SO FREAKING MUCH about this band that I can't even describe how bewildered I am. It's just generic hardcore, with some truly awful lyrics, that has been done a million times before, and a million times better.
Do you all like this because you're supposed to? I hate to tell you, the emperor wears no clothes.

An amazing hardcore album!!! CBK has done it again!! Their debt Turn it Around was perhaps the most well rounded, high energy, fast, agressive album I have heard in a while. Every single song was good, not one weak link and on Wake the Dead is no different. Guest vocals from Good Riddance was cool. Only problem I have was that it was not as heavy as their last, and this album almost leaves me to think that these guys will become like Alexisonfire and become mainstream in the next few years. God I hope they don';t become the new trend in "mainstream hardcore"....all that said leaves me to give wake the dead an 8

I like Combeback Kid but on "Wake Up The Dead," they completely ripp off the beggining of Zeke's "Chinatown"

wake the dead sucked. victory records took one of the best new school hardcore bands and turned it to shit complete and uder shit. i love turn it around it was one of my favorite top 10 hardcore cds. then they went on to the music killer labal aka victory record and turn to crap. all you kids that say your hardcore your basically wrong. true hardcore is bands like Black Flag and Slapshot not this new age stuff although i love it its not true hardcore. One more thing when i bought wake the dead there was this sticker that said mammoth breakdowns......where the fuck where they?

    My Score:

I just don't get it. Admittedly, I'm pretty picky when it comes to hardcore. In fact, I hate almost every hardcare band I've ever heard with very few exceptions.

However: the hardcore bands that do it RIGHT (bands like Bane and Avail) are some of my all time favorites.

After all the raving about the first CD, and subsequently the second... I decided this must be one such hardcore band. I decided wrong. This shit is cookie cutter. The breakdowns are weak and I must have misunderstood their interpretation of what a "singalong" is supposed to be. I had to listen to the CD 7 times just to be able to tell the songs apart.

i know firsthand what a prick tony is. i know that part of him is all about selling records and making tons of money. he treats people poorly. he is extremely paranoid. he is antisocial.

but i also know him as a one-time friend. and i also know that he LOVES hardcore. his idea of "punk rock" and "hardcore" may have been skewed from the average 18 yr old who buys his records, but dont think for one instant that he doesn"t LOVE hardcore.

i have never seen a person go so apeshit in a pit than tony did when Shutdown played the fireside bowl in chicago around 1997. he didn't sign those guys to make tons of money...he signed them because to him, they embodied the spirit of hardcore that established his label.

i guess it's just cool to see a guy, who started this label in his basement 15 years ago, still supporting bands like this....who give kids that *feeling*. that feeling that you don't understand unless you truly love hardcore. that's it. score is for the *real* tony victory.

I did buy it. I listen to it on vinyl here but I can't take vinyl with me in the car or to friend's places. I could have just downloaded the album and burned the CD but, ya got me, I decided to buy it. And why not? I've given 5 or so bucks to homeless people before and talked to them a little on 2 or 3 occasions a couple years back and every time the next time I saw the person they said the same exact thing they say to everyone. It's one of those things that sounds great in practice and ends up being (in my experience) a real bummer in execution. I put the money into the punk scene, something I believe in. The money's not gone, I just personally didn't choose to put it toward altruism. I don't see how it's your position to judge how altruistic or materialistic I am anyway. Make your own choices and I'll make my own choices.

Yay for self-righteousness! Yay for assuming the money has disappeared off the face of the earth or that punk record labels aren't as worthy of support as charity!

PS - If you really care about that kind of issue get involved with local politics. I'm about to change my voter's registration to this county so I can vote for some more progressive candidates in the election this year. It does better than the change and even talk I give most homeless people I encounter, sadly.

what you guys fail to understand is that a rating of ten is not just because of music alone. these reviews are opinions; how much you really really like it comes into play in the rating as well as just how good it sounds. there are albums that are amazing musically, but will never get a ten from me because i can't fully get into it and enjoy it every time i listen to it. radiohead is an example of this. but there are also albums that are not only awesome musically, but they make you want to listen to them ALL THE TIME. that's what this album is making me feel like. i can't put it down. yes, it's not the most musically ambitious endeavor out there, but it is done extremely well and better than 99% of the bands that do the same thing. pitchfork wouldn't give this a ten, but i sure as fuck would.

Another perfect score for a good, but not perfect album. Reviewers on this site are over zelous a little too much. People who submit a perfect score should have it automatically scaled back to an 8 and then at the end of the year we can all vote on which ones get the extra two points.
I mean seriously, very few albums deserve this high of a score and when the hype dies down or you get a little older those albums you loved so much when you were 16 don't really stand the test of time. Do you seriously think that this latest Comeback Kid album (although good) is going to be as influential as the Ramones' first album? As memorable as the Clash's London Calling? As ground breaking as Refused's The Shape of Punk to Come? No, most likely not. In fact, indefinitly not.

I also agree with sickboi thus far based on the streams of "Paradise" i think CVA is a better CD for the refreshing fury the CD had. Tons of bands do hardcore with traces of melody and added song structure, PIB was one of the only bands doing one minute songs beating the piss out of you will no frills. I should just buy Paradise already. Jade Tree is shipping the CDs out now right?
