Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

My honest opinion is that the Aloha Films Group is slightly mismarketing their product. Beyond Warped does not focus too much on the behind-the-scenes aspects of the tour; instead, it follows the standard path for documentaries about one of the most successful festivals in the history of music with performances and short interviews.

The DVD opens with a performance of “Punk Rock 101” by Bowling For Soup and is followed by the band describing how effective the Warped Tour staff is at physically setting up the show day after day, city after city. The majority of the video is delivered in this format as the musicians lend a little insight on how they feel about certain characteristics of the Warped Tour, the benefits of the diversity on the tour, the weather, and several other topics.

While many may complain about the lack of main stage acts out of the 20-plus bands on the disc, there are still quality performances by the household names. Guttermouth’s live renditions of “Party Of Two” and “Bruce Lee Vs. The Kiss Army” prove they deserved to be on the Warped despite an early departure. Anti-Flag lend two solid performances with “911 For Peace” and “Got The Numbers.” Epitaph’s upbeat pop-punkers the Matches fly through a bouyant performance of “Jack Slap Cheer” and later on you see bassist Justin San Souci hand-crafting shirts for a few fans. The River City Rebels forced themselves onto the tour and I’m glad the crew caught snippets of Saucy Jack, the trombone player, as he was a comedic treat on the dates I attended. The decision to mix a feature on hardcore dancing with a performance by From First to Last is a little sketchy, but the unintentional humor behind this scene makes it worth watching. Perhaps the strongest performance on the DVD is Billy Talent’s dedication of “Try Honesty” to all the people who make Warped Tour happen -- although it’s rivaled by a very cinematic edited cut of "Kids & Heroes" by the Bouncing Souls.

The most astonishing feature of the Beyond Warped DVD is the visual and audio quality of the footage, recorded entirely on High Definition cameras in Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound. Supporting the technology are several excellent camera angles of the groups, the fans, and artistic scenic shots spanning across two hours of impeccable footage.

The only significant fault with the DVD would be the lack of big names, but the bands on the media are listed on the back cover so you are not duped. Think of it as finally getting to see a few of the bands you missed because you were off watching Bad Religion or Rise Against. Another minor aspect that would be appreciated would be to include which city the performances were from on the screen as well as song titles. Other than those simple tweaks, kudos to Aloha Films on a job well done and we should all look forward to more standard setting media from them.

and yes it has alwasy been corporatte, nor have i ever cared about that, shit, i see a lot of 'punx' drinking dasani water at shows and hitting up subway afterwards. who fucking cares.

but i think the guys point was, its become overly-sponsered, if you catch my meaning. like at 97 there were only a handful of sponser booths, now theres shitloads and it does make walking around a hell of a lot harder. so its alwasy been corporate, but one could make the arguement that it has in fact become more corporate, not that i care.

"I'm so punx i went to the first warped, that means it was the best... Did i mentioned how punx i am, im fuckin punx to da max"

it doesnt make us punx, it makes us old. and the old ones were better. look at my lineup from 97 listed below and tell me theres a better lineup since. also, it was about half as much money and half as many sponsers and crowd back then. so it was smaller, easier to get around, cheaper and a better lineup. i guess thats punx? wtf are you talking about? i'm not bragging just stating facts.

"I saw Orange 9mm at warped and they blew every other band there out of the water....for several years afterward."

Fuckin A right. Those guys were incredible live. I even caught them after that awful "Pretend I'm Human" album came out with like 12 people in Grand Rapids (Kottonmouth Kings were the headliners, so you know I got the fuck out) and they killed it. That probably had to do with the fact that they complied with the crowd (or me and my 6 or so friends amongst the crowd) and elected to play almost their entire set from their first 2 albums, except for 1 song.

Quciksand was pretty sweet, too. I'm glad I had the chance to catch them when I did since Walter can't keep a fucking band together ever.

actually fuckface, if you look far enough back, before it was dominated by Epitaph and Fat bands, you see headliners are bands like L7, Quicksand and SNFU, who were tiny in comparison to Offspring, Bad Religion and Rancid. the tour gets worse by the year but maybe you can't see it because your head is so far up kevin lyman's ass

GET IT RIGHT PEOPLE!!!! Stop fucking acting like "oh it's been on a decline from 96 or 97 or 98". FUCK YOU. This tour has ALWAYS been incorporated with Vans. Yes, the first year was as well. I didn't have a problem with it then or now. While I agree that the quality of lineup has been questionable, it's still Warped. I find it comical that people think in 96 or 97 there were no corporate sponsors and that it was an underground festival. Kind of an oxymoron right? I have went every year except for 2002 and I don't bitch about how cool it was the year before. STOP WHINING ABOUT HOW MUCH IT SUCKS AND JUST BUY YOUR TICKET ALREADY. You know your going anyways.

    My Score:

i went for the first time in 97 and over 7 years I've had the pleasure of witnessing a solid punk rock festival decline into a crass, commercialized version of what it was supposed to be. Last year I showed up late and missed Tiger Army's set because I couldn't find the main stage through the unbelievable number of merch booths. I'm not joking, it was unreal. The people behind warped have seen its economic potential and now that's what they're worried about- cashing in. If it's about the music, like they claim it is, why not set up the merch booths in the parkiing lot so if you want to grab a shirt you can do it on your way in or out, instead of being surrounded by it while trying to check out a band. People can defend it all they want, but warped is put on by Vans, a company who makes their shoes in mexican sweatshops. What would make you not think that warped is about the people at the top lining their pockets?

i think i'm done with warped tour. last year i went pretty much out of habit, and we couldn't really find anything to do after seeing the few bands on our list. i never went to the tour back when the line up was fantastic, but even a few years ago it was more entertaining. at least it's headlining act wasn't story of the year.
anyhow, it seems like other kids are enjoying it, so i guess they can keep it alive or something.

    Nice guys.

    TERRIBLE music.

"Fire in the Hole" is one of the most laughable songs ever. This band, their "sound," and that whole type of thing... that 1997 era shite... was awful.

The first year was the best year because of quality bands. The first year you got to see Quicksand, Orange 9mm, Sick of it All, Civ, Seaweed.......just a great tour. The choice of bands for the past couple years has really sucked. The overall quality of the Warped tour has dropped off more and more every year to the point that its unwatchable/unlistenable.

"this tour is just a mere shell of its greatness from years ago."

no shit. I REALLY got into punk music when I attended Warped 97 (when i was 17).

    the lineup was

social distortion (one year after white light)
the decendents (one year after everything sucks)
    bouncing souls (s/t just dropped)
    pennywise (full circle just dropped)
    lagwagon (double plaid era)
reel big fish (turn radio off era)
mighty mighty bosstones (lets face it era)
sick of it all (built to last era)
suicide machines (D by D era)
blink 182 (dude ranch had JUST come out)
less than jake (losing streak era)

I forget who else was there, 5 more bands, no one great i think, but just look at the above 11 bands....and the era of their careers they were in (for most, their best album had either come out, they were up and coming and unknown (blink), or they were in the prime of their career/live show (social D, pennywise, bosstones))

tickets were 20 dollars on the nose i think. crowd wasn't too hard to deal with, the tour was still relatively small, maybe 4000 people in attendance, compared to the 15,000 it brings now.

i miss those days, but i still think the tour is worth going to, but it will never match 97.
