With a retrospective CD as high quality as Some Mistakes You Never Stop Paying For, there’s a compelling urge to turn the review into a diatribe against the scene, metalcore, or the current hot topic, throw in an MP3 link and then call it a day. Suicide File deserve much better than that as their epitaph, having broken up in 2003, thus, I’m stuck.

The truth is, the CD is straight up sick. Some Mistakes You Never Stop Paying For is a testament to old-school hardcore, with 13 of the 18 songs clocking in at under two minutes and a palpable anger aiming at a multitude of targets, usually at politics, with a handful about society, two or three about girls, and one wonderful song about a landmine. It’s virulent stuff in the most angry, bitter, spiteful and raging sense of the word.

Musically, they wouldn’t be too far from Bane, except with less metal and experimentation. In fact, for their swan song, the Suicide File went on tour with the above group, where I saw them absolutely blow the roof off of Chicago’s Bottom Lounge.

For the most part, the musicianship is superb, the lyrics are mostly quite thoughtful, but occasionally suffers from the saturation F-bombings. Still, you could do a lot worse than Dave Weinberg’s diatribes, even if his lyrical muse has an overactive potty mouth.

The material is comprised from various 7 inches, including their first EP, their split with RNR, demos and compilations. Thusly, there’s a wide range of recording styles and qualities, but the end result isn’t hard to choke down.

For those looking for a no-bullshit approach to hardcore, look no further. With the new material from Comeback Kid and Paint It Black being released so close to it, inevitably, Some Mistakes You Never Stop Paying For will get lost in the shuffle. These songs certainly aren’t mistakes, and you won’t regret the purchase.

    My Score:

Hey, i'm hardly the fat guy on the floor and I've been going to hardcore shows since 87! :) But I don't mean that in the "I'm more hardcore than you" sort of way, for I find nothing more annoying than that. (It's so hard to keep up to date of the latest stuff due to a lack of peer-group that still listens to the same sort of music, any suggestions would be very much appreciated).

The band is awesome, the sound is great. There is a fusion of punk and hardcore for sure going on there. I only have two pins on my bag: a From Ashes Rise pin and TSF pin. TSF really has some raw energy and a very embittered wit that seems to lack all pretension.

As for why good bands like this break up so soon. Well, the brighter you shine, the quicker you extinguish.

    take care people!

amazing cd. this and twilight is every song they've ever recorded.

    My Score:

no, i gotta disagree, it has a twist, but it's still pretty damn old-school sounding. and i am saying that as a large fan of old-school hardcore.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at 12:44 PM (EST)

    other things:
-you associated short songs with old-school hardcore. what? the suicide file had an extremely refreshing sound with a heavy punk/rock twist to it. i think theres...1 or 2, maybe 3 at most...typical "fast beats" in their ENTIRE DISCOGRAPHY. i cant imagine anything less old-school.
    - you complained about potty mouth. give it a few more years, you wont complain about potty mouth any more.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at 12:39 PM (EST)

iuashfiusahuiddfsa suicide file is the furthest sounding thing from bane. also, comeback kid is fucking awful. also, the suicide file is the best hardcore band of the last 4 years.

new review rule: if you started going to hardcore shows less than 2 years ago, dont review punk/hardcore albums. you just sound like an ass. im super-psyched that you are going to shows and into the music, keep that part up. we need more people like that. but wait a little while before you review things on big public sites, cause the reviews are misleading.

    My Score:

That Bane/Suicide File/Promise tour was the first hardcore show I went to.

Truth be told, I was going to go to Atreyu the night before, but it sold out. Thank God it did.

Is it just me, or does the riff from the song Laramie sound a hell of a lot like 'Do You Wanna Dance'?

    My Score:

    Fucking essential.

Why do bands like this always seem to break up so soon?

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at 10:34 PM (EST)

celuloid heroes are a fucking fraud.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at 10:33 PM (EST)

This band always had the most amazing guitar sound....like 50's rock n' roll mixed with hardcore. Easily the most incredible band of the last 5 years, with the best live show...last tour was suicide file, the promise, and bane. fucking nuts.

    Posted by Icapped2pac on 2005-03-01 17:53:51

Tak it easy, I was kidding. And just to make things clear, as I'm sure is the case with this band, most bands on this site are more punk than most bands on this site.

    Posted by Icapped2pac on 2005-03-01 17:50:07

Old-school hardcore is the new metalcore.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at 3:38 PM (EST)

    SO GOOD

the previously vinyl-only tracks sound great on this cd,
i love their first last 7 inches the most. its a shame they didn't do anything more with "another night in america," that song is amazing.

    My Score:

best band in hardcore in the last 5 years

    Posted by primeevil7 on 2005-03-01 09:17:55

I hope to God Indecision taped or otherwise recorded their last show. This a group truly worthy of a live CD.

Posted by sickboi on 2005-03-01 09:12:57

Whoah, when did we get a "no score" option?

PS, Suicide File gets a 30...

Sick band and a damn good review. That fucker Jesse could learn a thing or two about review from you...

    My Score:

shit is genius. these guys take a style that's been done into the ground, and put in some much honest anger and rage that it sounds new all over again.

p.s. the drummer of bars was in the suicide file. the singer of bars is in the hope conspiracy.

Is this the band that the singer of The Bars was in?
