For those who have just been introduced to Hopesfall by way of the album A-Types, you must be forwarned: this is a completely different band. Instead of the light guitar-rock band, we have a "metalcore" band that has drawn comparisons (if unfair) to bands such as Poison The Well and From Autumn To Ashes. This is the band's second release, following their Takehold Records debut The Frailty of Words. It is a four-song EP, and it includes the songs "Open Hands To the Wind," "April Left With Silence," "The End Of An Era," and "The Far Pavilions." Despite being only four tracks, the EP is worth buying. Some consider "The End of an Era" to be one of the greatest songs of the whole "metallic hardcore" genre.

This EP has a different lineup than The Satelite Years and is almost a different band than on A-Types. The only remaining member from this album is Josh, the guitarist. For those who are not familiar with Hopesfall's older work, the sound is characterized by soft, mellow bridges and interludes followed by intense (and I mean intense) hardcore. One cannot say that there are any real verses or choruses because the music is very linear, with no repeated parts. The highlights of this album are the two middle tracks "April Left With Silence" and the epic, seven minute-long "The End Of An Era," which are both landmarks in the melodic hardcore genre.

Check this out if you like older Poison the Well, older Underoath, or older Codeseven. Jesus, it seems like all these bands are going downhill (with the exception of Underoath, their new CD was pretty good). If you want to check out a band at their creative peak, then you should definitely pick up this album. Although it may be hard to find at large retailers, any independent record shop should have one or two of this album.

    underoath did go downhill.
    don't kid yourself.
anything after 'the changing of times' just isnt underoath.

    but hopesfall is great.

Ok so for an album as a whole, then its a 4
But as an EP I stand by a 5

    My Score:

the fact that you mentioned "the highlights of this album" make it seem that some parts were better than others, clearly seeming that this is by no means a perfect score.

which it clearly is not, even though this is arguably one of my all time favourite EPs, alongside against me!'s "disco" and taken's "between two unseens".

as much as i love all three of those recordings, they are by NO means anywhere close to a perfect score...

The first time I ever saw Hopesfall was with the Juliana Theory and Snapcase. A friend of mine wanted to buy their cd, but didn't know what band they were and ended up buying a Juliana Theory cd by mistake. When he eventually realised his mistake he went back to J/T's merch tablet and said "Yeah..I thought you guys were the other band. Can I get my money back?" I always thought that was kinda funny.

With everything in this review you are so damn right!

    My Score:

    This EP is incredibly solid.
It is indeed sad that Hopesfall became what they became. After their last album, I was hoping for them to up the ante even further, creating a radiohead-like atmosphere while still bringing the hardcore. These guys do [did] ambient to wild so well.

Also, Trustkill records is the worst record label around. Them or Tooth and Nail.

changing you lead singer usually means change in sound. BLAH fuck that change the band name if you're gonna do that

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, March 6, 2005 at 10:48 PM (EST)

a few lineup technicalites - this ep does not have the same lineup as the frailty of words. almost, but there was a different bass player. adam the drummer may have recorded a-types, i don't have it so i'm not sure, but he is definitely not in the band now. the only original member (or member from this e.p. for that matter) is the guitarist mentioned in the review.

also, far pavilions is on this e.p., not the sattelite years. best songs on the sattelite years are dead in magazines, dana walker, and the bending. oh how i love the bending.

no one should ever use the word "flippin" in place of "fuckin." i hate that movie so much.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 4, 2005 at 9:44 PM (EST)

hey, constanza, this ep is pretty flippin' close to a 10 in my estimation, also...

    The Fever- "Pink on Pink"
At the Drive-in- "Vaya" (unless you adhere to the "legal definition" of 5 songs or less for an EP)
    Fugazi- "Fugazi" and "Margin Walker"
Hot Hot Heat- "Knock Knock Knock"
    Model Citizen- "The Inner Fool"
Against Me!- "The Disco Before the Breakdown"

    there are tons

Funny I just dusted off the mothballs on Satelite Years yesterday. That album was pretty good, Far Pavillions being one off the best songs off it, along with Waitress. A Types=not so good.

    Underoath is not good.

Posted by costanza on 2005-03-04 17:07:41

Can anyone think of an EP that actually deserves a 10 star rating?

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 4, 2005 at 3:26 PM (EST)

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 4, 2005 at 3:26 PM (EST)

they did put out a full length with this lineup-the frailty of words

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 4, 2005 at 3:20 PM (EST)

One of the greatest EPs I've ever heard. If they had put out a full length with this lineup it would have been incredible.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 4, 2005 at 3:19 PM (EST)

This cd is better than anything Poison the Well of FATA ever did.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 4, 2005 at 2:03 PM (EST)

Ah yes, remember when they were good?

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 4, 2005 at 12:42 PM (EST)

Jesus, it seems like all these bands are going downhill

Did you mean to say "trustkill"? Oh well, it's not like it alters the sentence.

    My Score:

Almost no original members, totally different sound and style, it's time to just give up and change the band's name, because A-Types isn't Hopesfall... this EP is Hopesfall.

    Posted by Inspection12e on 2005-03-04 11:53:00

    I'd still skip them pacer.

Posted by pacer on 2005-03-04 09:35:40

Looking forward to seeing these guys at Groezrock now, was gonna skip them but this review makes it sound like they'll be worth seeing.

    My Score:

I don't care that Hopesfall ain't my bag anymore, but this EP is the best EP I've ever heard. Phenomenal. Many people may disregard this cuz it's hopesfall and they 'sold out' or whatever, but this EP is the shizznat. I wish this singer stayed in the band, and then maybe everything would have been alright. Listen to this shit man, it was out before all that autumn to ashes bullshit.

Posted by MarkieStabone on 2005-03-04 07:35:09

man for a second there i thought we'd go a whole review cycle without and 5-star "instant classic" albums, but i guess i was wrong. i didn't even read the review, but i can say with complete certainty that this album isn't worth a 10/10.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 4, 2005 at 7:20 AM (EST)

adam was the drummer on this cd, and is still the drummer. i own all of their cds, and he's in the credits for each of them.

truly, this was a breakout cd in the metalcore scene.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 4, 2005 at 3:37 AM (EST)

    A-Types isn't that bad...
It just seems to be played by a totally different band... News songs are really intense live, but of course not as much as this EP ones...
Please note that there's three new members in Hopesfall since 'No Wings...' Bass, Guitar and Drum player are new people, maybe too emo :p

So please, try to listen to A-Types with a new ear... It seems to be an evolution of the band!

the end of an era is one of the best "emocore" songs of all time. that song got me through my shitty prom.

    k that was even emoer.
