This was without a doubt one of the most highly anticipated hardcore releases of 2005, and thankfully, it delivers. For those of you who don't know, Paint It Black plays raw hardcore punk in the vein of early Black Flag, Minor Threat, etc. I personally find this band to sound very similar to the little-known 80's hardcore band B'last! (just listen to their album It’s In My Blood), which isn't a bad thing.

one of my favorite hardcore albums, and band such a good record. when i first got it i wasnt so into it, but after a few listens to totally grew on me Just got this album the other day, so far so good! Kickass driving tunes. Great record. I will buy every album PIB puts out if their as good as the first two. This album is pretty sharp, but I like the no-bullshit style of CVA more. And I prefer the production on it. Thank you, PIB, for restoring my faith in hardcore. "Goddamn, where has Comeback Kid ever said they were christian and where in their lyrics does it ever say anything about religion?" "Goddamn, where has Comeback Kid ever said they were christian and where in their lyrics does it ever say anything about religion?" I'm digging this album mostly for Yemin's tempered and more moderate rage, and the fact that they introduced a melodic element to the music. The combination makes the album more anthemic as opposed to just a collection of songs. Big ups to that first comment - the lyrics on this thing put 90% of the world's hardcore bands to shame. Rock on, Dr. Dan! Yeah, I understand some of what you're saying Kenjamin (especially stuff like Reagan Youth's early output), but these new records don't get the intensity of the bands playing together that those old ones do... And it depends what you like better about it, the intensity or the loudness. I prefer the old sounding stuff because it sounds like what it was: 4 or 5 pissed off adolescents playing hyper charged rock n roll... Stuff like this is no doubt awesome, but sounds kind of too professional. If anyone wants to read a non shitty review i strongly suggest this one This album doesn't sound overly professional to me at all; after hearing "Election Day" I actually thought of "Wake Up Screaming". HAEV U GUYS HEARD DA NU 50CANT CD???!!!?! WTF H3S DA IL3ST RAPAR 3VER!1!!! OMG WTF MAH MOM 2K M3 2 G3T IT AFTAR SKOOL 2DAY1111!!! LOL "Stuff like this is no doubt awesome, but sounds kind of too professional" F-Minus= The greatest and most underrated punk band in recent years. Stuff like this is no doubt awesome, but sounds kind of too professional. F-Minus fucks up one of the tracks on Wake Up Screaming disc but Albini just leaves it all in. Love it. Oh and Albini is fucking untouchable. Shellac on 180gram? Christ that sounds good. BSD, that's what bums me out about listening to records from the 80s. and before. I mean, the intensity of the player translates but the volume and tone are just not there. Whereas, I'm sure the live shows were amazing and sounded great, seeing as how most hardcore bands of today are using vintage equipment from the 70s anyways. I think what matters most is just representing the energy of a live set when it comes to recording hardcore... I mean, yeah, these bands try to "experiment" on record, but the best hardcore has always been a live thing. That's why I think "Wake Up Screaming" was so good, it sounds exactly like F-Minus did when I saw them. "it is essentially the new Sunset Strip hair-metal" I don't know, it doesn't seem to clean to me. I downloaded it a few weeks ago, and thought I had just gotten a shitty bitrate, but bought it Tuesday and sure enough, same quality. well said cos Hardcore had to go somewhere. Whether it was Bad Religion adding more melodic sing alongs or Youth of Today emphasizing the breakdowns, music can't just stay the same forever--which is exactly why it burned out in the mid-80s and evolved (or devolved, probably) into crossover. There wasn't anywhere left to go, what with so many bands playing short, fast and loud. Sickboi - "265," the new 50 cent is pretty hardcore I don't have any idea as to where someone got the idea this album has clean production. "CVA" was 10x cleaner than this. "we HATE the direction that these new and supposedly "punk influenced" bands are taking music. Screamo, cookie cutter atmospheric indie rock, metalcore (not punk metal), new-wave dance garage rock... whatever you wanna label it, it has no edge to it... and we ("wack scenesters") think it sucks." Brandon, I know your position on hardcore/metal but you don't seem to take into account anything besides what has been going on in Britain and the US. Scenes like brazil came from metal roots (armageddom, existencia de odio, RDP) and evoled into a modern hardcore with only slight metal influences. How would you explain scenes like japan or finland? International scenes have their own styles with varying degrees of experimentation. Eh, what about Fugazi, the Rites of Spring, NoU, and others? Shit, even Helmet. To the kid who thinks I am a "whack scenester"- metalcore, emo, screamo, etc. is not an evoltuion of hardcore punk. If anything this crap branched off from a mix of radio pop punk and nu metal. In my opinion hardcore punk DID evolve, but that evolution kind of disappeared. Hardcore punk EVOLVED would be bands like Flipper, Nausea, Samhain, late era Black Flag, Butthole Surfers, etc. I know those bands all occupy different musical styles, but they all seemed to have the intensity and edge of early hardcore punk.....and most started out that way. That style never went much further than those bands, and therefore today there is very little "hardcore punk" influenced music. Fuck you. Fuck all of you. "i think he was being ironic." "DAVE WAGENSCHUTZ is in the great GREAT band GOOD RIDDANCE, lets not forget that, he rules and so does ROOD RIDDANCE FOOLS" "i think he was being ironic." "you're all a bunch of wack scenesters. too cool for metalcore, too smart for pop-punk, too happy and/or unique for emo...so now it's back to hardcore & hardcore punk, where a lot of this other shit came from. you bitches." "DAVE WAGENSCHUTZ " DAVE WAGENSCHUTZ is in the great GREAT band GOOD RIDDANCE, lets not forget that, he rules and so does ROOD RIDDANCE FOOLS Fuck this Comeback Kid talk... Paradise the new record NMDS is recording will be the best hardcore records of the year. No thanks ma'am.. I'll pass on trash you'll get it if you watch more duff. I dont get what you kids have with her........ why is the black goo coming from the suit in the shape of africa? you're all a bunch of wack scenesters. too cool for metalcore, too smart for pop-punk, too happy and/or unique for emo...so now it's back to hardcore & hardcore punk, where a lot of this other shit came from. you bitches. Lohan is just a trashy lush. it looks like someone smashed hillary duff's face in with a frying pan. not attractive at all. score is for rolling stones Dude, don't hate on the Duffster. She's cool. cursed -II is way better than this and the new comeback kid Yeah I would say this is actually a bit better than CVA overall. Do you kids really like Hilary Duff?..hahah why? thats just sad Exactly what Jesse said... Lavish production for hardcore usually just turns me off. Nice rant against the Duff Stuff. The production isn't that clean. Its a near perfect album and Paint It Black is just going to get better. Musically it's written well, but the delivery just isn't what I want out of a hardcore band. The ultra clean J.Robbins production turns me off. - This cd owns ass. Better than CVA imo, and thats something amazing. "Hilary and assking stage is cool" Two more points: Pink Slip kills everything This album is fucking amazing. Probably the best of the year so far and going to stay like that. Seriously the best hardcore album in a long time. But the live show is where this band thrives. I saw them in Philly for their release show and it was honestly the best show ever. "they think Jesus exists!" This band fucking rips live. Go see them! Goddamn, where has Comeback Kid ever said they were christian and where in their lyrics does it ever say anything about religion? I hate to bum out those Comeback Kid fans, but they totally sucked BEFORE I found out they were christians! Paradise is a great record with deep roots in hardcore (Dag Nasty, Embrace, the Faith) with a contemporary sense of urgrncy. CVA was very straightforward and the basslines drove most of the songs imho. Paradise has a lot of little quirks that seem to be love/hate: the rawer production, more variation in the timing within songs and a whole lot more feedback. Also there's a lot of melodic riffs in places they wouldn't be on the first album making the guitar stand out more than the bass. I like it better but it's easy to see how any of those changes might be off-putting to others. "Is "Atheists In Foxholes" anti-atheists? If so, eww." "Seriously. I'll probably cause a shit-storm for saying this again, but I like None More Black a hell of a lot more than PIB." "Last time I counted, 8.5 is still pretty good. Probably not as good as your bands new record though, right?" "Is "Atheists In Foxholes" anti-atheists? If so, eww." The Hilary Duff shit is plain lame. Just a bunch of 13 year old kids who can't get any mumbling "Hilary and assking stage is cool" CVA is a shitload better than this. Is "Atheists In Foxholes" anti-atheists? If so, eww. "Shorter, Faster, Stronger" "easily one of the most promising hardcore bands in the world today..." "Hilary Duff jokes... They're not even funny in an ironic way, just really fucking annoying." Since this thread has evolved into a discussion of quality of reviews... I might as well throw my own into the fray... first of all...this review isnt that great. second of all, i've had this album for 2 weeks, and i can honestly say it's one of the best hardcore punk albums i've ever heard. he does get it right when he says this album can rip the face off of just about any other band releasing albums today, but honestly, dan yemin wanted to experiment with this record, and he did just that with songs like "pink slip" and of course, "memorial day". CVA stuck to the hardcore rulebook, and in many ways is EXACTLY what hardcore used to be, but this wasnt supposed to exactly be a typical hardcore punk record. in many ways, this demonstrates even moreso what real hardcore is about. it's not about fucking fashion, it's not about cool breakdowns, it's about playing music that means something and actually expresses something. i think this album has more heart put into it than any hardcore record since CVA, period. CVA is one of my favorite hardcore albums of the last 50 years (can't start comparing them to Django just yet), but this shit is straight whack. I can't dig it. My score stands. I was talking about CBK witht he whole Jesus thing. Of course life seems beautiful when you've got something like God or Jesus to believe in, but I just can't relate being an atheist and all. That's all I was saying. Whoah, whoah, whoah....back up. I saw them on Fri in NY, and let me tell you this band fucking rocks. This is the hardcore punk album of 2005. A mixture of Minor Threat, Embrace, and sheer fucking rage. "Also, moneenerd, have you ever actually listened to CBK or gone to a show? After listening to them heavily for the past 2 years and seeing them like 8 times, I don't see how on earth they are preachy at all. Posi = Preachy? You kids will call anyone out on anything, even if it doesn't make sense" "is this melodic?" let me rephrase that: is it melodic AND minor-key? most hardcore chord progressions suck I didn't like the mp3s I heard. I think i'll stick with CVA for now. Awesome band, what I've heard of this record is really impressive. This album's pretty fab, but got to say I was actually disappointed with it- with the amount of hype people were giving it. Still rocks massively though. Despite track 4. What the fuck is up with that. People sure are funny on this site, diminishing opinions that don't match this sites "bandwagon." Yeah, Victory or CBK asked for "hXc album of the year" debates when they put that sticker on the CD. An 8.5 at best? That's not even an option, fucker. Why is everyone comparing this to the new Comeback Kid? They're two different styles. I guess victory brought it on by slapping "HARDCORE ALBUM OF THE YEAR" on the cover... even though i cant say im really too into these guys, im gonna pick this up and give it a shot. blast were nothing but a black flag rip off. still a great band though. An 8.5 at best? That's not even an option, fucker. Here's what allmusic.com has to say about the new Evens record (it got 4/5): Hey....where's The Evens review? That record came out today.... Shut up wanker. "Election Day" rules. This record is an 8.5 at best. Its a good CD, maybe a great CD, but thats only in comparison to the rest of the garbage out there now. CVA is a superior CD. This guy does good reviews, they get to the point and are not long winded crap. Amazing. Destroys the new CBK, easily. Bane are gonna have to be pretty on a the ball to top this. yawn 'you sir, are an idiot. this record blows comeback kid back to canada (and i don't even mind the new comeback kid, so that should tell you how good this one is!). ' 1. This is hot shit. Hilary Duff jokes... They're not even funny in an ironic way, just really fucking annoying. looking forward to this. I don't know why, but CVA never did anything for me. At the same time, I respect every one of the band members, and their past bands, so I've held off trying to force myself to like CVA, and just try to dive into this one, and chalk CVA up to circumstance and personal preference. Better than Comeback Kid? Let's not take this too far now people. Scott, I don't understand why you would hate CVA but love this one. The riffs from "Labor Day" and "Pink Slip" were originally written for the last Hilary Duff album, which Dan Yemen worked on. Jade Tree reviews should be handled exclusively by Scott. Plus, you paid money to see Finch. Don't tell me to shut up. Hey, I'm allowed to comment on the quality of the review here. That's one of the main points, I'm assuming, of having a forum for each record and show review. This record deserves a way better review than this. Thanks for clearing up the reviewer guidlines. Moneenerd shut up. The kid's trying. what the... ok im not a great reviewer, but this is staff review work? sheesh. disappointing. if i didn't know how amazing this album already is, and read this review, i don't think i'd take the risk this reviewer wants me to make by buying this record. "so how does one become a staff reviewer again? This guy has like 10 reviews and counts. What are the rules again?" "Better than Comeback Kid? Let's not take this too far now people" Yes, better than preachy Christian hardcore. Easy. so how does one become a staff reviewer again? This guy has like 10 reviews and counts. What are the rules again? Better than Comeback Kid? Let's not take this too far now people. excellent album better than CVA, and that was a damn fine record itself. "Labor Day" is awesome. Judging by one song, the drummer rips it up. Fantastic. I'm getting this... Hey Brandon, what are your thoughts on the Wrangler Brutes? They're doing the 80s hardcore too and I think it's great. haha. never mind..."pitch" does not equal "paint it" like i originally thought 2 paint it black reviews in one day? come on...was my dfl review that crappy....i mean, i know it was crappy...but that crappy? damn, this record is hot. I downloaded it a few days ago and it's pure tits. I think it's better than CVA and I loved that one, too. Hopefully this album is available at my local record store Okay, my original comment was hastily written, but all I'm asking is to go a little further indepth than "ripping the face off". Score is for the review. I know a number of people who liked CVA who haven't liked this - and I'd like to have seen a review that actually fleshed out what succeeds and why. totally beats the new CBK, but cmon... more couldve been said in this review "Then why is the review so damn short and give you no idea whatsoever of what the album sounds like" Shit, this is wack. Two hardcore albums I like in one month?!?! My favorite album of '05 thus far. That will change with the release of either the Fingers Cut Megamachine or the NUFAN record. this is my score early candidate for hardcore record of the year. yes, it beats the new comeback kid. sooo good. Then why is the review so damn short and give you no idea whatsoever of what the album sounds like? Yeah, this rips. Plus, lyrically, it's one of the most well-written hardcore albums of the last ten years. For real. |
