With this 4-song EP, Circa Survive gives us a nice glimpse at what is in store when they release their first full-length Juturna on April 19th. Featuring members of defunct legends This Day Forward and Saosin, Circa Survive provide an intense, masterful distraction from the headbanging and the clichéd mosh. Now don't get me wrong, there's nothing I like more than a pulverizing breakdown.

This is a nice break from the kinetic frenzy that is hardcore punk rock, though. The music ebbs and flows naturally, often experimenting with thoughtful, dreamy indie hard rock with powerful post-hardcore crecendos. The guitars and bass weave in and out with the vocals and drums creating emotional songs that will fill the listener with introspective thought. Oh, there's some heavy riffage here that you'll find yourself bobbing your head to no doubt...and the references to emotional post-hardcore are quite obvious, but these songs are mainly slow to mid tempo dreamscapes capable of lifting you off your feet to a place far from the violence that plagues hardcore today. Every now and again they'll sneak in a little, subtle breakdown that gets the heart pumping.

Aside from the drumming and the stringed backbone, it's the vocals that truly stand out here. Anthony Green (ex-Saosin singer) has a voice unlike anything you have heard before. His soaring vocals remind me of a cross between the melodic crooning and yelling of At The Drive-In's Cedric Bixler and a tripped out Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell. There are times when you don't know if an adult male is singing or an 11-year-old girl...and it sounds amazing.

This will, of course, get labelled as emo by the masses, but make no mistake about it, this rocks in a big way. Post-emo, post-hardcore, Post-cereal. You can call it whatever you want. All 4 songs are different enough to make you want to hear more. This is a huge breath of fresh air at a time where repetitiveness reigns supreme. Circa Survive are for real and as far as I'm concerned, April 19th can't come soon enough.

It looks like if your band is signed to Equal Vision, Duk is going to give you a good review?!

Yeah, 7 Seconds too, but I was just naming newer bands.

Although for this guy I don't think 7 Seconds has that "dead-end" sound...

    "Paint It Black
    Kid Dynamite
    Cursed
    Kill Your Idols
    From Ashes Rise
    New Mexican Disaster Squad
    Avail
Strike Anywhere"- those are all great bands.....but i just dont see them as hardcore punk, they aren't dark (and by dark i don't mean gothic, makeup crap- i just mean angry and "dead-end" sounding, if that makes sense) enough......just my opinion.

Have you ever heard Paint It Black, Cursed, Kill Your Idols, From Ashes Rise or Strike Anywhere(FROM ASHES RISE AND CURSED ESPECIALLY!)

Seriously, I don't think the dead-end aspect was as important to hardcore punk, I mean all those bands are angry as shit, I mean yeah, bands like Avail and Kid Dynamite are both angry and fun, but seriously I don't know what you want these bands to do for you.

Anyways, try Career Suicide, they sound like they're RIGHT out of the 1980s.

the word gay originally meant happy, it turned into meaning homosexual. this doesn't mean all gay people are happy. it has now turned into meaning something lame or bad, this does not mean that the person even thought about homosexuals while using it. Stop being so fucking politically correct, it's stupid.

Posted by bizzlebrizzle on 2005-03-21 21:15:07

You're way too black and white with everything. When Political Correctness tells you what you can and cannot say it is obviously limiting free speach. And anyone lame enough to not say something for fear of offending someone is truely not a free-thinker.

And with the racism thing that's you being black and white again(no pun intended). People like you never take in to account the enviornment people grew up in, they never take in to account the economic factors, instead you just assume all racists are dispicable people, I'm not defending racism, I'm just saying that not every racist is the monster you make them out to be.

I'm pretty sure I can outlast you in this debate, so if you wanna keep going I'm game.

Posted by elvisdechico on 2005-03-21 20:40:42

benny, i don't use those words, either... sorry...

and how does political correctness/awareness limit free speech? if you had a 6th grade vocabulary, you could find alternate words or phrases to describe anything... and if you weren't ignorant to begin with, it would require no conscious effort to seek out said words and phrases... you would just not introduce them into your vocabulary... get it?

and now you're defending racism? yikes

if you want to continue this discussion, i'm open to the idea, as long as you don't resort to name-calling... otherwise, you can have the last word! enjoy!

Posted by bizzlebrizzle on 2005-03-21 20:16:57

In my political sociology class we were talking about how the only people you can safely make fun of anymore are white trash.

    Which itself is bullshit.

Those people have gotten the short end of the stick just as much as blacks have through out history. But instead everything is pitted as black against white rather than poor against rich(damn I'm sounding like the begining of The System Works For Them), but seriously, I mean, why are these people racist? Because they know nothing else. I mean when you're raised only knowing racism, especially coming from your parents who are a huge influence on you, what else are you going to be except for racist? And I mean these people on our supposed value system(because our society always associates the value of someone's life with how much they earn) are basically at the bottom of the barrel they have nothing else to keep them from the bottom except for being white.

IF ANY GROUP IN AMERICA DESERVES TO BE JOKED ABOUT FREELY IT IS RICH WHITE ANGLO SAXON MALES.

I can't see how this is a "break" from hardcore punk...since there hasn't been a Hcpunk release in years.

    Because bands like:

    Paint It Black
    Kid Dynamite
    Cursed
    Kill Your Idols
    From Ashes Rise
    New Mexican Disaster Squad
    Avail
    Strike Anywhere

All don't exist right? I can name a lot more if you'd like.

one time at the chance in poughkeepsie ny, the singer dude from saosin got wrapped up in his mic cord, and the guitarists cord. he spun around and fell over. truly hilarious. he got pissed after the song when the crowd was laughing and heckling his ass. i think his girls jeans kept him from being able to escape the mass of wires.

Is Anthony Green actually gay? or bi? or Morrissey?

    Morrissey was definitely gay.

Posted by bizzlebrizzle on 2005-03-21 02:53:47

PC is a bad thing, it's thought control and it limits free speach.

Go suck on a fucking dick, seriously, I'm not homophobic but more and more I'm just sick of obnoxious straight people that are pro-gay rights. I'm pro-gay rights but I can't stand someone who's straight telling me about how much I opress people when I use gay as a descriptor. For that matter you better not be using the terms "Gip" or "Ghetto" because both of those are very derrogitory to certain groups of people.

Little known fact: Getting "Gipped" is a derrogatory term for Gypsys who are a widely opressed group of people.

    Yeah, fuck off.

Hey ELFoolio...When I submitted the review it was in one big paragraph. The guys who run the site added the breaks. Great bunch of guys and fine editors too. Anyway...not sure I was "sucking cock" in the review, that was a funny comment by you. I was actually trying for the "bang in the ass" type of review but I fell short. Homophobes are so cool. That first paragraph break is my fault. I couldn't really decide where the first sentence of that second 'graph belonged. It was originally tacked onto the end of the first but I moved it out of unsureness.

Posted by ElVaquero on 2005-03-19 22:56:34

About the review in particular: the break between the first and second paragraphs is just bad. Straight up bad. Also, you suck a little too much cock during the review, doesn't help the credibility. Lastly, saying that the vocalist is unlike anything ever and then comparing him to two other vocalists is pretty hilarious.

Keep working on your technique and proofreading and you might one day be passable.

I saw these guys in Tempe, AZ last Sunday and I picked up the EP. They were pretty damn good, but there was something wrong with the mic and Green was drowned out by the instruments most of the time. Before Today was there also. Their drummer beats the shit out of his skins, man he is good. And Gatsby's American Dream, who were better than I expected them to be musically. They were the smoothest and cleanest musically. But the real stars of the show were Bear vs. Shark. Now those guys kicked ass! They fuckin' ripped! No other band got those stiff necked high schoolers to move at all. That dude was up on the walls, out in the crowd, flopping around. Great show by an energetic band. Scary Kids Scaring Kids closed out the show and they were the weakest in my opinion, although still descent, just not nearly as interesting as the others. My score is for this EP, which is damn good and BvS. If they come to your town or anywhere near you better get out there and check 'em.

sounds gay as hell, especially if it has someone from Saosin, the gayest band in the world(Even gayer than Limp Wrist!)

This Day Forward was good though, reminds me a lot of Converge.

I was really impressed by this EP. The hook for the chorus of "act appalled" is so goddamn catchy, it's ridiculous. I had my doubts about these guys before (having only heard the demo version of "handshakes at sunrise", don't get me wrong the song is alright, but not amazing), but this EP really has me looing forward to their full length.

I don't know why but Anthony Green's melodies on this remind me of Maura Davis' melodies w/ Denali and Bella Lea. That's a good thing.
