Small Change is what every hip-hop group should be, and everything a hip-hop group should try to avoid. Taking the stage was guitar, bass, drums, and two MCs, and coming out of the speakers were some of the most energetic rhymes I've heard over some of the most basic and horrendous beats. The drummer put more stock into how he looked drumming than his actual drumming, and I can assure you he treated the group like it was rap-metal. While I don't have much to say about the bass, the guitar licks were as lame as your high school's wannabe jam band at a talent show. Honestly, I'm a better guitar player, and I can't play shit. But while there was nothing short of a musical holocaust happening with the musicians, I couldn't help but be drawn in by the lyricists as they made their way around the stage, ripping out rhythms and lines that honestly impressed me more than I expected them to. Moments of precise delivery made me feel like these cats just need to get a good DJ, and then it would be smooth sailing from there. It doesn't hurt either that in between songs they said that someone looked like Coach McGuirk from "Home Movies." Goddamn I love that show.
1 - I just really wanted to do a footnote because everyone else is doing one, and I truly just wanted to be cool. I'm sorry, honestly.

Did you see Trampled by Turtles at the Luce block party? That's one kick ass group. This isn't ironic love. It's not on Pitchfork, either. Sure they have a more varied taste in rap music, but they stuff they pick is generally good, and/or relevant to the music world. I love hip-hop just as I love jazz and punk and blues and rock 'n roll and electronica and reggae and ska, metal and country. Every musical genre is good if it's done well. This is why I listen to Hank Williams, Black Sabbath, Mos Def, F-Minus, Minor Threat, John Coltrane, Múm, and hundreds of other groups. it doesn't have to be an "ironic love of hip hop." it more of just realizing that hip hop can be good music too. i definitely agree with jesse on that last paragraph as well. jesus let's keep the indie rock "ironic" love for rap on pitchfork... They also played Braces, which I found on iTunes the next morning. It's on some non-corporate hip-hop comp. It's pretty damn good. See there's the predicament. Because I'm better than the White Stripes. But if the White Stripes are better than me, we've stumbled upon quite the vicious paradox, eh? Eh? The White Stripes are better than you. I don't have ADD…ooh what's that shiny thing?! woulda been a decent review if he didn't have A.D.D. I looked at the lineup and immediately thought Jesse is reviewing this. When I want social commentary in my rap, I'll listen to Grandmaster Flash- "White Lines (DON'T DO IT!)". |
