Missed Icepick. Wouldn't have minded seeing them but my wife isn't too into Hatebreed. I'll get over it.

To extremely little fanfare, H2O took the stage just before 10 PM. It's been a while since I've seen them but I know they've been playing a bunch of shows recently. Attempted comeback maybe? I was pulling for a set chock full of oldies, but after about 3 or 4 songs, the crowd started with the "Let's go Murphys!" chant. Ouch. That's not exactly winning over the hometown crowd. But H2O wasn't done yet.

Seemingly unfazed, they trudged on. Despite a really annoying buzz coming from the bass and the drums they kept building momentum...and building it and building it.

Towards the end of the set they played "5 Year Plan" and "Family Tree." It sounded a lot better and more like old-school H2O. They closed with "Guilty By Association," easily the best song of the night and the one that brought the entire crowd full circle, back on H2O's side. Freddie from Madball came out to do his part and the crowd ate it up. Now THAT'S how you win over the hometown crowd.

Now the big question... would the Dropkick Murphys have the balls to play "Tessie," their ode to the Sox in the Big Apple? Time would tell.

The Dropkicks thundered onto the stage with a blistering version of "For Boston" and then went right into "Workers' Song." Any sound problems H2O faced clearly were not affecting the Murphys.

They played a couple of songs that will probably be on the next album, including one I think they called "Mickey," about a boxer from Boston.

It was a mostly heavy set. When they started looking for a fan to sing "Barroom Hero," they said it was time for one of the ladies to sing it. They pulled a chick onto the stage who promptly started singing "Dirty Glass." Her ass got booed and she was whisked off the stage. Another girl came up to sing it and got at least some of it right.

The show came to a screeching halt when the Murphys announced they were doing a different version of "Fields Of Athenry." They said they got a letter from a soldier who was in Iraq and if he didn't make it home to the states, he wanted that song played at his wake. The soldier didn't make it home and he was honored by the band with a somber, stripped down version of the song and a huge ovation from the crowd.

Okay, here we go. The screen was lowered and it was time for the Murphys to enjoy a once in a lifetime opportunity. First off, who ever thought the Red Sox would be able to win a World Series? Sure as shit, not me. Well, I guess when you see an opening, you go for it. So as highlights from the Sox championship season illuminated the big screen, the Dropkicks played "Tessie."

There were plenty of boos, a few cheers and a lot of middle fingers, mine included. Someone even pelted one of the guitar players with a beer. That cracked me up. But I'll reason it this way...for 86 years Boston has watched the Yankees beat them up repeatedly. So we toss a charity championship at them and let them have their moment in the sun. So the Murphys can sing "Tessie" 'til they're blue in the face because it ain't gonna mean squat by the end of this season.

Moving on. They also played "Fortunate Son," "Walk Away," and "Curse Of A Fallen Soul."

At the end of the show, they pulled more chicks up onto the stage for "The Spicy McHaggis Jig." On the pipes for the entire evening was the one and only Spicy McHaggis himself. Good to see him back. From there they went right into "Kiss Me, I'm Shitfaced."

After the encore they played "Boys on the Docks" and maybe one other song. They finished with "Skinhead On The MBTA" and pulled as many people as they could on stage. They even mixed in a little AC/DC ("TNT") into it. Good stuff, good show, good times. Go Yankees!

    My Score:

The "Tessie" stuff went over great during St. Patrick's Day, especially with an intro from Bronson Arroyo to set up the A-Rod stuff, but I am not sure why they did it in New York. Truth is, the song is pretty corny and shouldn't be played anywhere outside of Boston.

One song I am surprised they didn't play there was "Fairytale of New York," which I have now heard them play twice and therefore expect to be in the CD that comes out in June. The part of Kristy McColl is played by Stephanie (I always forget her last name) who does the give-and-take on "Dirty Glass" with Ken Casey. Al sings Fairytale, though. Only thing is, being a Christmas song and all it was strange when I heard it in 98 degree heat last summer on the Warped anniversary.

And by the way, short paragraphs are fine. Ever read a newspaper? Fifty-word paragraphs are for text books and sophomore year term papers.

    what's irish about baseball?

Posted by jamespastepunk on 2005-03-31 00:00:34

Maybe 2007 we'll be contenders again. Sadly, I think its pretty unlikely.

please, loving the red sox is getting as old as hating the yankees- same stroy, different bandwagon

on a different note, this show was awesome- the tessie film was funny, everyone was laughing, especially when Jamie Hatebreed came on stage and started screaming Boston Sucks

The new DKM songs sounded weak though

gone for the season yet wood is pitching in a spring training game tomorrow and prior is just about back...

    zambrano = cy young

barry bonds has some quotable quotes but this whole cop out thing is pretty low

Posted by TheOneTrueBill on 2005-03-29 22:33:04

I think he's an asshole, and his whole "the media is forcing me to sit out the season" is the bigest fucking cop out I've ever heard in my life.

Posted by Anchors on 2005-03-29 21:52:25

Kids right, a healthy rotation in Chicago would slay any possible compitition. Unfortunately, I doubt that'll happen.

And while we're on a baseball tangent, what's everybody's thoughts on Barry Bonds? I think personally, he's a douche, but it's exciting that somebody in our lifetime is chasing the most prestigious record in all of sports.

.. And bring on the 'baseball is not the punx!' comments.

Posted by TheOneTrueBill on 2005-03-29 21:15:48

    That is true.

And fuck the Cubs. the White Sox are where it's at.

I read somewhere that the new Singles Collection has a Nips cover on it..."Vengeance", I think. Someone said that Lars Frederiksen sings on it. Anyone know?

This sounds like it was a good show... FOR ME TO POOP ON!!!

Posted by jamespastepunk on 2005-03-29 18:50:34

Unfortunately, Wood and Prior are likely gone for the season. I wouldn't trust Cubs brass to tell me the right time of day.

Posted by TJmoney on 2005-03-29 18:11:44

not as terrifying as a healthy wood/prior/maddux/zambrano

no team wants to face them in a postseason series...not even the yankees

H2O have always been a great live act.

regardless of the other opinions i thought this was a very well written review, and I enjoyed the description of "Tessie". As a Yankee fan, I can't wait for this season to begin.

H20 does now, will in the future, and has always sucked hard.

    Or "Old Time Hockey"

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 9:57 AM (EST)

H2O Kicked the Murphy's Ass! Dropkick Murphy's are becoming way too big and have lost their edge. The three new songs they played sounded like Smash Mouth. The Tessie shit took it over the top, not because they played it In NYC, but the song sucks so bad it hurts.
H2O on the other hand had real intensity. They attacked the crowd, the pit was much bigger than the Murphys. They even made the songs off GO sound good.
I own every Murphys album and seen them many times, but I'm done until they get a little more "old school hockey"

Posted by theundergroundscene on 2005-03-29 09:25:55

    i hate the fucking yankees

but you're a fucking dolt if you disagree that they have both the best pitching rotation and lineup in the big leagues

    johnson/mussina/pavano/wright/brown is TERRIFYING

Posted by jamespastepunk on 2005-03-29 09:04:14

H2O's performance in Chicago started out slow, but got back to the speed at which I remember seeing them with Shai Hulud back in 2002.

Their live show slayed then and it slays now. Maybe H2O's new CD won't suck.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 6:16 AM (EST)

Fuck the Yankees, Fuck the Red Sox, baseball is a total bore. Who fucking cares? Is this a concert review or a world series flashback? Anyways, I love the Dropkick Murphys, they always kick ass!

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 6:07 AM (EST)

Yankee fans shouldn't be allowed to post reviews. They don't count as people.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 6:06 AM (EST)

No stars for the Yankees. Buncha chokers.

Go Sox. The Nation wants another title, and guess what? If the pitchers stay healthy, we'll get it.

    Wait Till This Year.

Is a review of DKM's "Singles Collection Vol 2" ever going up? It's been out for a couple of weeks now. Here's a short review: It fucking rules. It's mostly a cover album of old oi / streetpunk athems, stripped almost entirely of the Irish influence the Murphys have come to be known for the last couple of years. When I listen to it, I'm almost compelled to quit my job, shave my head, go straight to the bar and then smash up everything I see. But that could be just me.

Also, when's that H2O DVD / greatest hits CD coming out? I thought it was supposed to be around March?

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 12:45 AM (EST)

dude that wasnt spicy mchaggis...that was scruffy wallace. the murphys just make him dress like that to fit their gimmick. fucking lame, but true.

i was at the sat show and was thoroughly bored

Posted by TheOneTrueBill on 2005-03-29 00:28:59

I saw H2O in January, and they started off slow then too. Literaly, they were playing the songs slower than usual. but they did warm up, and I remembered why they were so important to me when I was getting into punk.

As for the Murphys, the Singles Collection reminded me just how awesome they used to be. They need to get back to rockin'

I'm going to be nice because this is your first ever review.

But please, for all that is good and holy, no more of this 17 paragraphs that are 2 sentances a piece business. It's not just you, but it makes for a really annoying attempt to read.
