Is it okay if I compare the Locust to Mars Volta in this review? Hold up, don't get mad, just read.

The Mars Volta are rock and roll stars who love to rock out, jam at length, and fiddle with ambient noise. On Safety Second, Body Last, the Locust seem to follow that route. Keep in mind that Locust albums are a fraction the length of Mars Volta albums and about 10 times as chimerical. Both bands have a taste for bombast and have their own very devout following.

One of the key similarities, however, is the use of ambient sounds and noise as bridges between tunes. Much of this EP is comprised of ambient noise that slowly builds to a mild crescendo. Honestly, this is not the best material the Locust has ever recorded. Also, this EP does little to set any new direction for the Locust. If you know the Locust, then you know what this sounds like -- over the top, spastic, not-quite-grindcore, sci-fi punk rock. Now, Locust fans, if you're willing to shell out X amount of retail dollars for two Locust tracks, then by all means get this. If you want to get into the Locust, skip this entirely and buy Plague Soundscapes immediately.

That's right, Locust fans -- two (four?) songs, over the course of two tracks. You might question how long this EP actually is (10 minutes) by looking at the track listing, considering that the Locust are known for extremely short songs ("Armless And Overactive/Invented Organs" and "One Decent Leg/Immune System Overtime"). The lyrics are ambiguous and on-spot as always -- "so call it a lifestyle, but it's really a filthy fucking traffic jam in disguise, and you won't say shit even if your mouth is full of it."

For everyone, fans included, this isn't an overly memorable disc, but it definitely serves as an appetizer to whatever the hell these guys are working on now.

ok ok kids really lets get to the heart of this thing the members of this band were in some of the most original and inspiring bands (struggle, swing kids) in hardcore back in the day, not to mention now (some girls, head wound city, holy molar etc..) justin has a label (three one g) that puts out amazing bands(he released the first unbroken 7') and if you kids could step out of the mall and realize that in four years you'll be all i used to listen to them back in the day to get cred neat!

You guys are all fucking morons. If you don't like the locust then why the fuck read the review? This cd isn't their best, buts its good. The rest of their stuff is amazing, so get your heads out of your asses and go listen to whatever "punk" music it is you listen to.

How can you say this is not punk rock at all? It has to evolve at some point -- you can only do the same three chords so many times.

"Self indulgent noise wank that only kids raised on Green Day and the Alkaline Trio would hail as genius".

    yah, definitely the same crowd.

    My Score:

This cd isnt punk in any way, shape or form. it should not be on this website. This ep is masterful, the locust are so brutal, they just happen to be too extreme for a lot of people. and for the record i dont listen to alkaline trio, im not rich, and i definetly dont wear duct tape

that's just what the locust is, alway a half-assed band

Am i the only one who thinks this review is really lacking? It seems like this is only the first half of it or something.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, April 9, 2005 at 9:16 PM (EDT)

I don't think you reviewed the actual CD or else you would know more specific information about this record. Oh and this isn't typical music from the Locust, it's rather different from what they've been doing in the past.

    That is wonderful.

Remember when someone manipulated a baby crying electronically and pressed it onto vinyl calling it a rare locust ep? They sold these things for buckets of cash on ebay to idiot rich kids who dress themselves in duct tape. Whoever did that (and I'm fucking positive they don't visit this site) needs to be coronated as king of planet earth.

History will view the locust in much the same light as mao's great leap forward.

"This score is for cheesy gimmicks, costumes and just plain rediculous music.
Now lets crank up some misfits!"

    I get jokes.

This cd also reminded me of the mars volta immediatelly upon listening, I don't know if id talk about it in a review though, as there is no real musical similarity. Just they did the same kind of ambience between songs thing that the mars volta did on this new album. I'm not really into that shit, personally, though I love both bands. Anyone, who plays an instrument know that these the locust have serious chops especially the guitarist and drummer. They rock heavily, there is no way you can see this band live and not be impressed. This cd is pretty tight, and I think the band sounds better than ever, though these songs are probably not their best. Their new shit live is unbelievably tight. obviouslly noise rock isn't for everyone. (no type of music is really "for everyone," so why do retards try to comment on every band they don't like? Do the retards have lives? (besides being retarded)) MIsfits suck. (without Danzig... who now sucks)

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, April 9, 2005 at 9:48 AM (EDT)

it's actually 10 songs split onto two tracks.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, April 8, 2005 at 8:41 PM (EDT)
    My Score:

This band is as intolerable as Slipknot's heavy songs (about 95% of them). This score is for cheesy gimmicks, costumes and just plain rediculous music.
Now lets crank up some misfits!

    My Score:

you guys try and make this out to be more than what it is...dudes in costume making noise and selling cds to kids who will listen to it. i dont know what the fuck your talking about with the "they arent meant to be listened to" comment...in that case they would be writing books, or they would only have live shows and they would nt release shit on cd , which can only be listened to and not watched. unless, of course, they release that shit for the money from kids who will gladly dich it out. i am still waiting for this band to be good, cause right now, there is a band out there that dresses up in locust costumes and go crazy live....but i'm not listening to their recorded output because it is a ripoff in terms of price per length...and also, cause the songs just arent that good.

it breaks my heart..believe me...i love bands that dress up

"The Locust aren't meant to be listened to."

"In that case this might be an impertinent question: Then why are they a band?"

Because that's the format they chose to present their ideas. You could call them a noise-project instead. And it's hard not to observe some of the conventions of being "a band" when people will pay for your recorded sounds.

haven't heard this yet have most of their other stuff. The thing with the locust is they are meant to be listened to most people just strongly dislike anything noise related.

    My Score:

Interpunk kept billing this as the most accessible record yet (or whereever they got their description from), but I don't see how stretched-out bits of atmospheric noise qualify.

Still, it's decent, but this and S/T is all the Locust I've heard. I still need to get PS.

    My Score:

The Locust aren't meant to be listened to. That's both the big joke and the secret. They're really more of an experience... but just as a counterpoint to other forms of musical expression.

there's got to be some "listenability" to music. random grind noises with bleeps and blips doesn't cut it.

    My Score:

what you call noise I see as a band that has spent a lot of time listening to fantomas learning how to make their evil 40 second songs into evil 1:30 songs. i loved the parts of this album that sounded like blood brothers raping a NES. but for the most part this album just sounds like slowed down locust songs. to prove this point I put on my vinyl copy of the s/t album, and slowed the record down. It sounds just like this. Minus the NES beats.
