New CDs are tough. Maybe you bought it for that one song that kicks your ass every time you hear it on the radio, maybe you borrowed it off a friend and have never heard it before, or maybe it’s the newest release by one of your favourite bands and you’re itching to get your hands on it.

Whatever the case, there’s always that training period where you listen to it, possibly while reading the liner notes and “get used” to it. After doing this a few times, you can sing along, anticipate the next track, and genuinely “get” the CD. To me, one of the marks of a great band is how painlessly this process takes place. With No Address’ Time Doesn’t Notice, it’s amazingly short. The CD has characteristics of an instant hit, so much so that it’s very surprising that Time Doesn’t Notice is the band’s debut release. The sound is so personalized, refined, and polished. I can’t pick a favourite track; they are literally all good, with no skippable, “not quite there” exceptions.

There are elements of grunge in some of the guitar tracks and in the vocals; Phil Moreton has that gritty, sore throat sound (but only in the best possible way). Overall, the CD has a truly likeable, creative, and dynamic sound that does not expire after only a few plays.

In the band’s bio, it says they nearly didn’t record “When I’m Gone (Sadie)” because they had played it too many times. Whew, what a close call that was. That song rocks my socks. Other highlights include “It’s Alright,” “Never Coming Back,” and “A Step Away.”

Comparisons are inevitable. This band sounds like other bands -- good bands. Three Doors Down, Treble Charger, and maybe just a soupcon of scrunge rockers like Jet immediately come to mind. That being said, they add their own particular brand of blusey sexiness to everything they touch.

Excellent lyrics: check. Great delivery: check. Toe-tappablitlity: check. Good recording workmanship: check. Best CD I’ve heard in a damn long time: check.

if the music is good then what else is there that really matters? seems like you are more into the image than into the music.

I saw them when they opened up for Crossfade and well...it didn't go too well. They got majorly booed and had things thrown at em. I admit, I booed too, but probably not for the same reason as everyone else. Honestly, they don't have much stage presence. Their music isn't too shabby, in fact I kinda liked it, but they definitely need to work on their presence on stage. So...sorry for booing, but now you have some constructive criticism to diminish that. Damn, they need an email so I can tell em personally. Oh well.

Whoever said this band sucks and that Ben is a prick has clearly never listened to the band or met any members.

    My Score:

Couldn't agree with you more, Jesse. If they would just play that soldier-anthem single on those tornado-siren size speakers over all of Iraq, Pakistand, Afghanistan, and Syria, all of the "insurgents" would surely surrender just to stop the aural pain.

Posted by Jesse on 2005-04-18 03:29:28

And Three Doors Down might possibly be the worst band I've ever had to listen to in my life.

Posted by Jesse on 2005-04-17 18:54:09

Yes, because I so often wish to buy an album after hearing a hit single on the radio all the time. Do us all a favor and head on over to AbsolutePunk.

    ZING!

Yep, I'm feeling like an asshole again. Deal with it.

"Actually, I think the more painful the process of "getting" a CD or a band, the better the result is, not the opposite. I CD's like The Animal Collective's "Sung Tongs" and Radiohead's "Kid A" when they came out, but as time progressed I eventually came to fall in love with these albums. The easier an album is, the more disposable it is, if I can find it instantly enjoyable, it's just good sounding pop. But when I really have to try to get into it, that's when I feel more rewarded.

I have never agreed with a statement more in my life. All my favorite CDs are the ones I didnt like at first. All the ones I loved at first are now collecting dust. There are some exceptions of course (REFUSED!) But that is generally how it goes. Well put.

    My Score:

Are you being serious? Most of the albums that they review are put out by labels such as Rough Trade, Sire, and Sanctuary; essentially, the sub-labels of majors. I'll hijack a short school bus the day I see Pitchfork review something put out by, say, Asian Man or Thick or No Idea. Real indies.

"So it's not punk, related to punk, DIY, or connected to the underground in any way? Don't we have pitchfork for these reviews?"

Pitchfork reviews way more bands that are more punk, DIY, and underground than most of what's reviewd on this site.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, April 15, 2005 at 3:15 PM (EDT)

I heard one song off of it and thought it was good. I might pick this up.

And why isn't screaming in music over with? Do any of you still think that's cool?

a "soupcon" is a fancy-dancy* word for "little bit", most often used by snotty cooks**.

*fancy-dancy is not a real word

    Couple of things:
    1) Not really sure what a soupcon is.
    2) Three Doors Down and Jet aren't good bands.
