Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

If ever there was a band who believe in the mentality of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," it's definitely Pennywise. Ever since their self-titled debut they've stuck rigidly to playing rapid-fire skate punk and seemingly not really caring whether people like it or not. Album number eight The Fuse is therefore going to please ardent fans of the band, whereas the detractors will most likely remain unimpressed by the 15 tracks on offer here.

"Knocked Down" kicks things off as they mean to go on, albeit with slightly less crisp production than the last couple of (admittedly pretty nondescript) efforts; however, Jim Lindberg's voice is still a commanding presence and the musicianship is as tight as ever. On tracks like "Competition Song" they ape Bad Religion almost down to a tee, but to me this is not such a bad thing; if you're gonna sound like another band, make sure it's a good one. Their message still remains a political one, but they also make references to the struggles of every day life and the current state of humanity. "Fox TV" and "The Kids" both show that there is still a hunger in this band which might not be sated for a while yet, and there is almost a metal infuence on a couple of tracks, albeit not as evident as with other awesome punk bands like Strung Out or A Wilhelm Scream.

Maybe there are one too many songs on The Fuse, as songs like "Disconnect" and "Premeditated Murder" are pretty substandard compared to the fury and blitz of the first few tracks, but this is a relatively minor point of contention for me. As somebody who has been a fan of this band and defended them from the usual criticsims levelled their way for a good few years now, this record proved, after the disappointment of 2003's From The Ashes, that there was still some life in this particular dog yet. The trends may be changing all the time, but it is pretty refreshing to see a band stick to what it does well and that gives the fans what they like. The Fuse isn't their best work by any means, but while they may not top the albums that were released in the mid-90's, Pennywise still have the ability to leave an impression, which this album certainly did with me.

The Mars Volta they are not, but for anyone who still appreciates the skate punk Epitaph sound, you could do a lot worse.

pennywise are better musicians than 99.99999% percent of all punk bands.

they kept their music fast and tight, they didn't change styles to meet with current popular culture.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, January 28, 2006 at 7:43 AM (EST)

It's not thier best but I don't think they put too much heart into it at all. From the Ashes was a great Cd. It was a change, so fuck your ass.

Just to clarify that I hate The Mars Volta, my point was that if you want complex music, listen to them.

I gave this album a good score despite the possiblity of getting verbally molested for it, so don't start on me.

    Thanks and peace,

I'm aware how strange this may sound, but this is my favorite Pennywise release. It culminates various styles they've adopted over the years, ranging from the energetic Fox TV to the hardcore crunching Stand Up to the slower, more straightforward Lies. True, it's nothing groundbreaking from Pennywise, but the variety keeps me entertained more than previous PW releases.

From a long time PW fan: I fucking hate this CD. It's a joke. For a band that once had so much passion, energy and creativity, this disc stands as not even a shell of their former self. These songs are so pathetic, cookie-cutter, if it wasn't for Jim's voice, I would have guessed this was some shitty new band trying to emulate the old PW sound.

Ugh - I feel dirty for having just listened to this. If some no name band put this album out, there is no way people would be sticking up for it as they are.

Give it up Pennywise - get your passion back or hang it the fuck up. Stop wasting our time.

The Fuse may not be as good as previous Pennywise albums, but it's still pretty damn good. Go do yourself a favor, and listen to homosexual The Mars Volta with your penis hanging out with your preppy drunk ass hip hop lovin friends.

The more I listen to it, the more I like it. My cousin gave it to me about two months ago and I only listened to it twice until it came out. Since Tuesday I gather that I've listened to it four times, and it keeps getting better. The production isn't as bland, the songwriting is still moving back to the Full Circle era high, and the message is still strong.

What I really hate about this album is that it blatantly recycles old hooks. Broken ones, at that. However, it is still mildly enjoyable. It has some energy, but there doesn't to have much heart in it. The songs sound like sour of the moment deals, and the band sounds as though their just writing music because it's their job. Oh well.

Posted by Anchors on 2005-08-10 12:57:27

If artwork is meaningless, why do bands do it at all? Fuck man, why don't they just sell their albums on blank cdr's in clear jewel cases!

Just like Crooky said, if it wasn't for the art, there'd be a huge fucking contingent of people who didn't buy records anymore, what incentive is there? You can have the same thing on a CDR. And don't tell me that it's to financially help bands out, because bands make next to nothing off albums. It's merchandise and touring that give them the money (little as it may be for some.)

And what does buying paintings have to do with anything? You can't enjoy paintings and album artwork separately? You're a fucking clown.

An album should be a complete package. Obviously the music is by far the most important aspect, but that doesn't mean bands should just not give a fuck what the cover art looks like, and what's in the liner notes.

If you want two albums just about equally at a record store, but can't decide, and one has awful cover art, and one has great cover art, which are you going to take?

    Just sayin'..

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at 8:46 AM (EDT)

My score is for anyone who judges music by the cover art. I think more bands should put in to their music what they waste on album art. Also, Pennywise is awesome, as is Lennywise.

They keep making music and people keep buying their records for one simple reason, Pennywise provide, fans of the genre (PW especially) get what they are looking for in a band. there must be a reason for this, eh? Pennywise is an awsome punkrock band!

perhaps the most meaningful comment that could be made about pennywise is that in the comments of the review of their latest release, a number of people seem to be concerned about a band that no longer exists and a college football video game.

    just saying is all.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 7:46 PM (EDT)

this is insane. pennywise why? i cant even bring myself to comment thouroughly. but even the review is writen by a fan, and it still gets 3 stars. who is going to buy another mediocre pennywise album? this is embarrassing.
as for the "if it aint broke dont fix it" comment. i dont think that saying is relevent anymore, it was meaningful maybe 3-4 albums ago. but now, ok, let me put it in skating terms...
its like learning a kickfilp, and never bothering with any other tricks. sure the kickflip is pretty cool, no-one will argue that, but if thats all the tricks you want to do. you are a boring, shit skater.

NOFX being on the soundtrack doesn't suprise me that much. They had a song on one of the Tony Hawk games a couple years ago, remember. The context may be a little different, but really....it's not.

Posted by greenparticle on 2005-08-09 17:45:59

regarding ncaa 06, i was really surprised about a NOFX song (jeff wears birkenstocks no less!) on the soundtrack. they won't show a video on mtv, but they will contribute a song to a video game? intruiging.

but i wasn't surprised at the jawbreaker and BR songs on there - i mean, really, they've both been on majors at some point. it was inevitable, what with all the kids liking "punk" nowadays. :-P

You are a retard. This junk IS a trend, a timeless one which kids get into when they turn 13 and it typically ends when they turn 15 or 16. The fact that you are STILL into it and playing it off like you are against the grain is sad. This is why these bands always have 13-15 year old audiences and then the few older jackasses in the back that won't grow up. As for 'white belt' type trends, ever notice how they start with older kids, then the audience gets younger and younger until it dies? It works different. One is a sippy cup, one is pokemon.

'full circle' is one of my favorite punk albums of all time and was one of the soundtracks to my sophmore summer in highschool...

therefore i've always had an affinity for these guys...I really liked 'straight ahead' and I thought 'land of the free' was another great album.

then i kinda started losing interest in the band 'passing out of the phase' i guess when i was about 22

i gave them another try w/ 'from the ashes' and was THOROUGHLY disappointed. It was hands down their weakest effort and first PW album I heard that just did nothing for me with the exception of a handful of tracks (yesterdays....uh...like a few of the early ones...)

this is their last shot. I'll give em one more try for old times sake.

Though overall the standard straight ahead skatepunk blasts that Pennywise fans are used to work the best. Though suprisingly for me one of my favourite tracks is probably the slowest P.W song yet, 'Lies'. Overall its most comparable to Straight Ahead though with a darker tone about it.

Im always really bummed by the thrashing pw gets everytime they release a new album. I have always loved the band and enjoyed all their efforts. Granted some of my favorite bands are from the fat/epitaph category. Nofx, lag,pw, strung out, rise against, anti flag. But to me that sound that gets regurgitated throughout these bands albums is not boring its just punk rock. I'm not saying that there is anything extraordinarily different in these albums but hey its punk. Punk to me is that pw sound of beating drums fast fuckin guitars and bottom line the one reason why punk is cool the lyrics. I just think that all the horse shit we hear today that gets labeled as punk rock is a joke. I know what punk is like to a lot of us and honestly it doesnt get more punk than pw or bad religion playin the same four fuckin chords over and over but progressing with amazing lyrics. So hey fuck you..no one ever said these guys were the stones they are what they are..u either like it or u dont...punk is not for everyone

I agree with the sticking to a formula comment. I have (and I guess still do) loved Pennywise for a long time and must say they are an awesome live band. However, the slight (and I do mean slight) changes over time are not enough to keep real solid interest. I feel they could have taken the best songs from there last three or four albums and had one album that could possibly beat their mid-90's work. However, most of the tracks lack the urgency and emmotion of that work.
