Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell (Deluxe)

Woo. More psychobilly. I can sum this up in a few words: If you like psychobilly, you'll like Demon City Wreckers. If you don't, you won't.

I don't know about any of you, but I really can't tell a difference between any of these bands. Whether it's Tiger Army, Nekromantix, Horrorpops, etc. -- they all sound goddamned the same. Yeah, I understand that you embrace the whole motorhead culture / hillbilly demonic imagery stuff. That's nothing new. I bet these chumps have those weird stylized pompadours as well.

It's not horrible. Not at all. I'd rather listen to it than most shitty types of music, but it absolutely just does nothing for me. Whatsoever. It's hard for me not to see it as a novelty act. Like power metal. It just seems silly to me that the people who play these types of musical genres actually take themselves seriously. But enough of my ranting.

Inner Demons features two vocalists trading off, though if they weren't split in stereo, you wouldn't be able to tell. There are ten songs, each song has four chords, and each combination of these four chords is around three to four minutes. Each song also features the same zombie imagery. But I'm sorry, I'm just ruined on zombie songs after Zeke's "Evil Dead." Now that was a fucking song about zombies. Anyway, as far as psychobilly goes, I've heard much worse. But I've also heard better.

first off your saying all psychobilly bands sound the same and dress the same ,look at the fuckin punks all with spikes and mowhaks punk lost orginallity years ago. And if psychobilly is such a shitty type of music don't review it or listen to it i think your review sucked and that you suck. Stick with green day records. You make fun of the 4 chords and yet punk was built on 3. i hope we meet someday so i can kick your fuckin teeth in.

    STAY PSYCHO!

    My Score:

Well that's the problem with generalizing everything. They don't sound anything like any of the other psychobilly bands. They don't even call themselves psychobilly, i don't think. They get trashed by most other psycho bands and fans for being too punk and haviing too much of a hardcore influence. They also take a lot of shit for not "dressing the part". So you're unfairly pigeonholing them based on what somebody told you they were.

    My Score:

Jesse seems to be the only reviewer on this site that actually seems to understand the stars system. A 4 isnt terrible, its just not very good. Anything a 5 and over is moderately worth your time. I never see him go overboard with the stars and I appreciate that. I used to think he was a dick, but he has become my favorite reviewer on this site.

I like psychobilly quite alot, but it is true that the whole genre is just a incestuous take on each others work half the time. When they are not switching band members, they are taking fashion cues from each other. That is both one of the genres flaws and strengths. I could see it bothering some people. Doesnt bother me all that much.

    Hello,

In the world of reviewing, which I take no part of because of assholes like you guys, there are going to be shitty reviews from people who dont like the music. Not everything can be a 3 1/2 . Gotta have some 1s 2s and 3s. Jesse does a good job of tell me ( atleast ) what Cds suck ass and what I shouldnt waste my money on.

There is only one song where the vocalists trade off. The first one. Also, these "chumps" don't have pomadours... if you would have even looked in the booklet you would see that. Also, only two of the ten songs have anything to do with "zombie imagery". That's why your review wasn't fair or objective, because it seems like you didn't pay much attention to it. Which is fine, i guess, but judging by the bands you mentioned, it seems like your knowledge of psychobilly is limited to artists on Hellcat and the ones that have appeared on the Give 'em the Boot compilations. It's like handing a Willie Nelson CD to 50 Cent and asking him to objectively review it. Review it as a punk record, not as a psychobilly record. It sounds more like a punk record to me, anyway.

That comment was complete shit. You go ahead and establish you arent a fan of my review..... and that's all you do. If you arent a fan of my reviews then why the hell are you commenting on this??

You're just being totally unfair to the reviewer (me), who no doubt put at least some effort into this and you're being unfair to the fans that actually want to know what this reviewers opinion.

    Ha! Served!

I wrote this review for the same reason you wrote that comment. You didn't like something, and you wanted other people to know. Only, actually, I'm supposed to write these reviews. I'm a staff reviewer. It's my job.

Rubber City Rebels, Mad Ciity Bitches, River City Rapists, River City Rebels, Murder City Devils....

How about the "Unoriginal City Namers" as a band name? eh?

    Posted by the_other_scott on 2005-08-12 21:07:15

i think the murder city devils, the demon city wreckers, and the river city rebels should have a band brawl

i think we all know who would win that one, and they're not even a band anymore

its funny how you guys dont even know the guy and are inferring that he likes emo haha.nekromantix and tiger army are fucking overrated anyways.

    My Score:

Tiger Army and The Nekromantix are two tottally different bands. If you are gonna stereotype, this new wave shit punk all sounds the same. Coheed and Whatever sounds just like New Found Glory who sound just like Fallout Girl who sound just like everything else. Psychobilly is a sub-genre of punk that celebrates debauchery. Its all about a good time. Now go whine about your ex-girlfriend who is fucking the starting quarter back.

Dude I got that Zeke CD today for 3 bucks used, as well as "End of Time" by the Dehumanizers on LP for 2 bucks... I didn't know what I was getting with the Dehumanizers, but I'll be damned if it doesn't make me want to go out and raise the shred... Skatey crossover metal. All the songs are about how society hates them, or apparently how much they hate smokers.

Also, I found the 3-Way Cum "Killing the Life" LP... It's amazing. Not quite classic enough to warrant a review 9 years after it's initial release, but if you dig Capitalist Casualties, or to make a more well-known comparison, F-Minus, you'd definitely love this shit. Dual vocal, extremely fast crusty hardcore, but not grindy.

Psychobilly sucks unless it's the Cramps.

For fuck's sake, why do you write about psycho bands if you don't have a clue about this genre? Stick to your shitty emo/metal arty-farty bands.

Posted by Jesse on 2005-08-12 03:18:32

Yeah, yeah, Tiger army and Nekromantix sound nothing alike. I know this. I'm just trying to make a general point.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, August 12, 2005 at 3:13 AM (EDT)

Man, if you can't tell the difference between Tiger Army and the motherfuckin' Necromantix, you've been inflicted with some serious mental retardation.
