It boggles the mind that this album went so overlooked upon its release in 1994; maybe if it was released today on a label like Trustkill or Victory it would get some much deserved attention. This album is a cult classic; if you love it, you love it very much. Perhaps the lack of attention is due to a combination of interchanging members, laziness, and drug problems. Though they formed in the early 80's, this is only the second bonafide album they managed to release.

The album gets the shit kicking with "We're Back, We're Pissed." I can't explain how right on this song is; the trademark opening scream by Jason Sears combined with the metal-tinged riffs marry arguably the best percussion combination ever seen in punk rock. The bass -- it is so good, it puts Matt Freeman to shame. This album should appeal to anyone who demands originality with top notch musicianship, and the vocals push this album to the top of the metal / punk rock heap. "Will Knut" combines the rock melodies of Queen with the brute metal force of Avenged Sevenfold.

All the way to the album closer "Take Me Home" this album is classic. If you have never heard this album, try to download it, there's a good chance you'll never be able to find it in your record store. Epitaph Records, who released it in 1994, don't even have any copies for sale on their website. Know that if you get your hands on it, you are fortunate; not many are lucky enough to own this forgotten classic. You would be a dumbass if you're not proud to tease your oblivious metalhead friends with it.

"brute metal force of Avenged Sevenfold"

but Avenged Sevenfold sucks ... a lot. I wouldn't use bad bands to describe better ones.

    My Score:

ok listen im a huge rkl fan i went as far as meeting them kissing a** and actualy hanging out with chris and joe in SF. the reason i found this site is hearing this new band called sevenfold something, and thinking they rip rkl off alot. For one thing they say dose alot. any way its good rkl owns and this is there best ercord but the next will be better

    My Score:

Ha, this is actually kinda weird and bringing memories back. Great to see a review of this posted here. At the time RKL released their albums on Epitaph I bought everything that came out on the label, so I'm the proud owner of all 3 of their first albums, and to be honest, I like the first release (Reactivate) even more than this one. In a way I can understand someone referring to Avenged Sevenfold. Of course there's a huge difference, but in those days I was also confused if this was actually a punk or metal release, due to the many guitar-virtuosity that is on these albums. Let's be honest, there's not that many punkalbums that show these skills as in metal. Anyway, I also had the pleasure to catch these guys live in Amsterdam in 1995, and that bass-player was really amazing to witness. At the same time it was amazing to see how well these guys played considering how drunk and/or doped they were. Maybe it's only gossips, but at that time people talked about avoiding to host these guys in your home or book a hotel for them... maybe someone knows more about that?

agreed this record is most defenitally kickass

    My Score:

This is definitely one of my all time favorites. Yeah, almost every song starts out with "WELLLLL!!!" but that's just the Jason Sears thing to do. Useless bit of Punk Rock trivia: The drummer on this album, Dave Raun, is the drummer of Lagwagon now. Wow. Cool I know. And yes, I have an original pressing. No, I will not sell it to you.

    Best Tracks:

    "We're back, we're pissed"
    "Betrayed"

this record (and i do mean the LP) sat in the bin at Record Convergence in Fairfax for the entire time I knew of that store - about 5 years.

guess I should have bought it. i think RKL is good, but i just have never gotten in to them

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, August 22, 2005 at 12:42 PM (EDT)

how does this compare to rock n roll nightmare? that shit rocks hard.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, August 22, 2005 at 10:37 AM (EDT)

This album is great, other than the fact that Jason sounds like Vince Neil. Too bad RKL have not recorded anything since.

    My Score:

I own this and haven't listened to it in a couple of years. It's great, but about half of the songs start with the singer going "WEEEELLLLLLLLLLL!"

Posted by notfeelingcreative on 2005-08-21 22:14:49

Great record, even though I haven't seen my copy in about seven years, I'm not sure if it's availible any longer, at least not through epitaph.

    My Score:

I haven't listened to this album, but the score's for "Keep Laughing".

What the fuck's up with Epitaph letting things like this and the Insted album and the DFL album go out of print?

Posted by rkl on 2005-08-21 15:40:15

if rkl reminds you of cockrock, you should go ahead and hang yourself now, because its obvious that youre worth nothing to society.

then again, riches to rags is my favorite album ever, so im a little biased.

    My Score:

Awesome album. I took me forever to find all the songs (after years of looking for it in record stores). The bass is amazing, especially in "Betrayed"

whoa, people have died for talking shit about ill repute.

    My Score:

RKL reminds of Ill Repute, who reminds me of 80s cock-rock, which reminds me of why I stopped listening to the radio.

Great band but really re-release your stuff already, it's fucking hard to find!! can't get enough of that Nardcore.

brute metal force of Avenged Sevenfold???

Oh wow....like the brute metal force on their newest album?

Okay, I'm sure the bass on this album is amazing, but there's no way it puts Matt Freeman to shame.

Matt Freeman is the best bassist that punk has ever produced, HANDS DOWN. No one can fuck with him. I still love listening to Op Ivy's "My Life" bootleg for the bass intro... the guy shreds in a way Les Claypool can only dream of.

    My Score:

fan-fucking-tastic album. i think i've looked for a review for this a few times in the archives and was disturbed by it not being there.

one of my favorite cd's when i got it in 96 or so, one of the soundtracks to early high school.

jones, i do the same shit, skimming over reviews. probably half the comments i make say something that was said in the review.

oh, and 'Keep Laughing', in my opinion, is just as good, maybe a slight step below.

i don't usually say stuff like this, but: get this, or you don't belong on this site.

Posted by stevejonestherealbones on 2005-08-21 03:16:09

i need to stop skimming reviews, cause you addressed it being out of print right there.

what the fuck is epitaph thinking...they need to print some more rkl and dfl for the kiddies who are missing out

    My Score:

    Score's for "Keep Laughing" (Mystic).

Playing "Keep Laughing" (since that's the only RKL record I have) made me think of the following: Saw Bill/Caustic Christ/Pist etc., this tour, he had a copy of the brand new Spermbirds record "Set An Example" with fucking Cerebus on the cover, just like "Something to Prove." It's fucking blazing and rad!!! Are we the only ones over here aware of this new record?

Listening to RKL reminds me of the Spermbirds, but I think (at least on "Something To Prove") Spermbirds are the better band.

is this out of print? epitaph released it so most likely....

    "man, good review

except for the part about avenged sevenfold"

this review was probably written a couple years ago when it was okay to like avenged around here.

So this is after "Reactivate". I've played a show with them about 3 years ago, they were good.

    NP: "Keep Laughing" untouchable!

Why even post this review? No offense but if you need to be told how hard RKL rock you should be banned from existing. Awesome album.

"No, you're thinking of "Reactivate," which sucks"

    wrong.

it's not even a matter of opinion, that album is amazing also

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, August 21, 2005 at 2:04 AM (EDT)
    My Score:

No, you're thinking of "Reactivate," which sucks. This album, on the other hand, does not include Bomber at all, and it rocks hard. The sick guitar solos, the bass playing, the drums, the vocals...man. RKL's best in my opinion.

Posted by lushj on 2005-08-21 01:58:35

Is this the one that was released by the one original member (Bomber) who did a record under "RKL" by himself?

Posted by LMChc on 2005-08-21 01:40:35

    man, good review

    fucking amazing

I'm pretty sure I downloaded this cd like five years ago and I really liked it. I must have lost it about four and a half years ago though.

    My Score:

The bass on this album really is amazing. So is the guitar, and the songwriting in general, but the style of bass exhibited on this record is truly unheard-of in punk music.
