Anti- Records -- One Day as a Lion

Anyone unfamiliar with No Use For A Name’s history has probably never heard of their debut album, Incognito, which was released by the long-irrelevant label New Red Archives in 1990, and discreetly reissued by Fat in 2001. My copy happens to be a reissue, but the only noticeable improvement is that the horrendous nun-praying-alongside-some-dancing-cats logo of NRA has been pulled from the liner notes and the CD sticker. The sound quality remains the same, which is a good thing. Incognito is raw, flawed, somewhat amateurish in its execution, and really couldn’t succeed otherwise; any illusions of grandeur would sink this record faster than Butterbean in a pool. Although it doesn’t rank among NUFAN’s best albums, it does an admirable job at providing the listener with a ton of fun.

The music on here is a rather strange mix of brutal punk rock, metal, and what can only be described as growling, courtesy of Chris Dodge (of Spazz “fame”). Now, I’m not talking about effeminate, light Iron Maiden-esque metal here. In spite of the metal influences, there are few solos on this album. The songs are constructed around a blend of pounding guitars, screaming, and transitions between slow and fast tempos. The track that epitomizes this sound is “It Won’t Happen Again,” which builds with slow-paced yelled verses before making an awkward transition to a blazing punk chorus. Those who enjoy NUFAN for their poppy melodies would do well to approach this album with serious caution; Incognito is filled with melodic moments, but the majority of these moments are of a nature that will appeal only to those who enjoy bands such as Sick Of It All, the Avenged, and Snapcase. Nonetheless, there are a few exceptions. “DMV” and “I Detest” are surprisingly direct in their approach to accessible punk rock, and would not be out of place on NUFAN’s mid-90's albums. They are, however, simply not of the same caliber of the songs found on those gems, primarily due to Tony Sly’s at-the-time undeveloped singing style and the band’s incomplete search to find true cohesion and direction as a unit.

Incognito’s biggest flaw lies in its pacing. Most of the songs begin with a nice intro...which then proceeds to go on, on, and on, until you find yourself wondering if the track is an instrumental. Take “Felix,” for instance. Its duration is 2:24, but Tony only starts singing 1:08 into it. Now, the song’s chorus is enjoyable in itself, but in this verse-less format it simply feels like a stand-alone chorus, a head without a body. There are never any build-ups. The music ranges from passable to good, so you won’t ever find yourself cringing as you listen, but it detracts from the songs in that you won’t feel a rush waiting for that great chorus to come along. You will merely listen, and, if you like hard-edged punk, enjoy, but the experience will be devoid of any genuine anticipation.

Lyrics? You can forget about the “relationship crap” some purists complain about when referring to the band’s later albums. The sole relationship Tony Sly addresses is a seemingly bitter one ("she’s just a power bitch / that I already know"). Sly’s lyrical themes focus mainly on politics, mean people, and juvenile matters that need not be described here. At times he is pedantic: “People like you should be punched / Punched right in the face! / Feeding us your lies / Gonna put you in your place.” On occasion, he shows signs of a burgeoning maturity: “This is not a puppet show / No one in the world is hanging on a string / Take a look around; there are people everywhere / They might be going in circles, but it's their own thing.” And in “Truth Hits Everybody,” he actually manages a few good lines that hint at greater things to come: "You had me thinking in a backwards motion / You use no Scope to smell your daddy's breath / She does not choose to use no suntan lotion / If you don't like the words, then you can guess.” Wait, that’s a Police cover. Well, he sings it with conviction.

Singing with conviction is not something that can be said about Chris Dodge. In fact, most of his “vocals” on this record (2 complete songs, a few verses, and backups) shouldn’t even be classified as such. “Record Thieves” is a strange, strange affair in which Dodge appears to be randomly growling out the liner notes while the band plays out-of-tune. In “Weirdo,” Dodge at least follows the music, but sounds so bizarre that it will be impossible for your ears, or your brain (which I recommend that you don’t use to scrutinize the lyrics), to focus on anything but the guy. By the way, that latter song will go down in history as NUFAN’s most experimental ever. You’ve never heard a song quite like “Weirdo” before, trust me.

This album just feels like a hodgepodge of good and bad ideas. There are some linear, enjoyable tracks ("DMV," "Sign The Bill"), some which fall a bit short due to the band’s excessive reliance on the instrumental ("Felix," "Hail To The King"), and some which are only semi-interesting due to the hilariously awful growling of Chris Dodge ("Record Thieves," "Weirdo"). Essentially, Incognito is a light-hearted version of NUFAN; one full of little indulgences, goofiness, cheesiness, and most importantly, fun. For a mature and confident effort from the band, check out their latest album instead.

    rehashing shit because im bored...

if youre a sophomore in college and youve never had to get a job, you must have some sort of upperclass roots. there are funds that even the most badass scholarships/student loans wont cover. my "desk job"(i dont actually have a desk) is in the field that im majoring in, so i think im doing pretty good for myself, skipping school & smoking pot & all. i was never bragging, just trying to make a point that not all classskipping potheads turn into societal wastes. just like not all straightedge kids turn into successes.

so the dude wrote a review you didn't like, do you have to call him out on it? and why does this chinatown character feel the need to reply to each and every post made about him? let it go my man. do you really care that much what everyone else thinks?

sometimes reading the comments on the website can be pretty funny, but most of the time it's downright painful. quit your crying. no wonder why hawthorne heights sold 500,000 records. the punk community has turned into a bunch of sissys.

RRRRRRRRRiiiiiiiiiiigggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhttttttttttttttttt. So I'm not even going to read the old review where Anchors apparently mocks poor working class people. But here's what I am going to do (because why not piss everyone off, because this is a message board and meant to be taken with the utmost seriousness)

Anchors: I can see why people think you're pretentious. You do sound like a bit of a dick when taken out of context or when misunderstood. As a whole, I gots no problem with you.
Chinatown: You review sucked ass. It tried too hard to be too impressive and just sounded long winded and self-important. Get over it, not everyone likes your writing style it's not a personal attack (I was taught that in second grade). You may be great in real life, but continuing to make ludicrous arguments about Scott’s relationship with NUFAN and using the word neo-con make you sound like a dick.
RKL: Great that you skipped a bunch of classes and made a life for yourself. That's actually really good. But, if what you say is true, I can point out over a dozen people (including many in my own family) who are now dirt poor, uneducated, bitter and resentful. The fact is I find the story of the guy who cut class and then became a success to be the exception that proves the rule.
As for the argument I don't think there are actually any sides anymore. Well actually there are too many sides to list. You're all battling over a series of opinions that can't possibly be proved one way or the other over the internet. So just accept that you disagree and enjoy the fact that you all are lucky enough to have internet access and smart enough to use it. It puts you above 90% of the world’s population right there.

goddamn man, that was wicked funny.

i'm really begining to think BSD (Will) has a homosexual crush on Anchors. chinatown, on the other hand, just loves to fight.

    this shit never gets old.

and it's wicked re-tah-ded. say it like Ted Kennedy would. fucking massholes.

I'm done trying to explain myself to you kids, because honestly, you've got some thick fucking heads.

You guys are right, I'm a classist. You know, with my 6 figure income and 7 figure house. Oh, and let us not forget the two Ferraris parked outside of my house. Get fucking real. I stated my opinions, and backed them up, and if you want to make a runaround of things, and take others out of context, have a field day with it.

That review got published over a month ago, and you're still, still carrying on about it. Get lives, kids.

    Posted by the_other_scott on 2005-08-29 16:06:50

anchors reviews aren't that great, and the classism thing is kind of lame too

however, the fact that someone is proud that they skipped high school all the time and/or didn't graduate is just as lame

as sappy as it sounds, the more educated this world gets the more progress we'll make

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, August 29, 2005 at 4:06 PM (EDT)

Also, I find it funny that Anchors claims to be some non-arrogant, unpretentious citizen, yet continues to dog people for their jobs.

That's awesome, Anchors. Maybe in Syracuse, everyone who's unemployed or has a shitty job only has it because they want to be punkrock, but in Kansas City, it's more because there are no other options. Discrediting everyone who doesn't go to a university is pretty much the epitome of "pretentious college jerk". Good job. Be sure to respond claiming that I have some bias against college kids, but I know some, and none of them have your discriminating attitude towards the less fortunate.

I'm with "rkl" on this one... In fact, the fact that Anchors is such an annoying, uninformed, biased asshole is more the reason his opinions mean nothing than the fact that he jocks Alexisonfire.

I'm also rather disturbed by what I infer from his reviews in regards to what he thinks of the less fortunate.

Keep trying to cover up your classism, though, Anchors. Just remember, without those terrible, awful-smelling, ignorant underclass dwellers, the society you live in would go kaput.

anchors: unlike yourself, i only make judgements based upon posts made on this site. in your posts, you have been unsympathetic towards the common class, which is a stance the gop has taken since the dawn of the new deal.

    pre·ten·tious

    1. Claiming or demanding a position of distinction or merit, especially when unjustified.
    2. Making or marked by an extravagant outward show; ostentatious. both of those definitions mark you. youre not the only person of intelligence(and your actually being smart is highly debatable) on this site, regardless of whatever pedestal you attempt to place yourself upon.

Let's do this piece by piece. In my posts I've been unsympathetic? I mentioned a few working class positions in my review, and have explained since, more than once that the people I'm refferring to are high school drop outs, who drop out on their own accord.

I've never claimed any position of high merit or distinction, though you can make all the insinuations and assumptions you want. You may think I act arrogant, and that's cool, but until I say "I am God of all that is Punknews," you have no claim. And as for the second part of that, I don't own a lavish house with various furs and a Range Rover, so you can shove the ostentatious claim up your ass as well. I'm guessing you don't know what that word even means, or else you wouldn't have been dumb enough to associate that with me.

Keep trying, kid, I've got all day.

Young Republican? Come on, stretching much there? I don't much involve myself in politics, but I'm not exactly Carlton Banks, and I'm a democrat if anything. Secondly, you're saying I'm pretentious because I use big words? Please, you used polysyllabic instead of "big," and I'm trying to impress people? I don't need a dictionary, thesaurus, or anything else to write my reviews.

I'm so fucking sick of people who don't even understand the word "pretentious" calling people that.

if i had wanted to impress you, i wouldve said something along the lines of, "they dont give national merit scholarships to idiots."
part of being smart, as you seem to consider yourself to be, is being able to determine the meaning of sentences by using context clues.
punk rock was made by the working class, for the working class. young republicans, such as yourself, are just a corruption of ideals. just because you can write long-winded sentences full of polysyllabic words(with the aid of webster's, im quite sure), doesnt make you intelligent. in fact, its just an indication of you being a pretentious jackass.

They're not just any band. They're the guys who got you into punk music, and then more or less landed you a job at an indie store, a role as this site's editor, and a place at Alternative Press. And, despite all of that, you simply write them off as washed-up because they decide to change their sound. Yeah, Tony's voice is a bit higher than before (he quit smoking and took some vocal lessons). Yeah, the songs aren't as aggressive as before (they are, however, doubtlessly more creative and possess bigger, better choruses; all you need to do is compare a random song such as "Alone" with "Apparition" to see that).

It's like you have this set image of No Use as an aggressive
skatepunk band with raw vocals. I dunno if it's because you were so struck by Leche Con Carne! that the band's eventual departure from that sound seemed like an absolute betrayal to you, but up to now you've yet to offer any valid criticism as to why No Use isn't a good band anymore.
I mean, you like bands with soft vocals and a mellow sound (Weezer, Copeland). Just because No Use progressed into that rather than starting right away simply isn't an excuse to hate them. If you separate the various elements of their music (instrumentation, production, lyrics, and so forth), you'll see that they've all improved over the course of the past few years. Yeah, Leche! and Making Friends are my two favorite No Use albums too, but that's because I, like you, was introduced to independent music by way of those two albums. I was able to accept their change in '99, and still think that they're one of the greatest modern punk bands in the world right now.

I like how you keep on bringing up comments about our "intelligence" in your posts. How the fuck would you know how me or rkl perform academically? If you're basing it solely on whether or not you agree with our comments, well, then, that shows a great deal of immaturity on your part. I won't, say that you're dumb, since there's no real way of knowing that by reading a few of your comments here and there.

Besides, "fairly decent" is a pretty relative term. Mowing lawns during the summer for your elderly neighbors in considered "fairly decent" by some people, I'm sure. So if you want to continue to act like the minimum wage desk job you have is something special, go for it. I have so much awesome stuff I don't know what to do with it all (not to mention a virtually complete collection of Boris The Sprinkler 7-inches). -Scott

Seeing as you hate No Use, you should sell those two 7-inches on E-Bay. Just last month a copy of You Bug Me was auctioned for over two hundred dollars. Not only will you make plenty of money out of those two recordings, you'll also be handing them to someone who actually appreciates the band.

""Truth Hits Everybody" is not a NUFAN song, it is a police song. Please don't make a comment about tony's lyrics in the song when they are not his they are sting's."

to chinatowns credit, he addresses that its a police song.

NUFAN was co-founded by Dodge. NUFAN had an ep which was #3 on slap-a-ham. (Try finding that on ebay!) The original band was to be black-flag oriented fast hardcore, but obviously there was some conflicts about that.

Chris Dodge played in many ground-breaking bands like Stikky, Spazz, Ancient Chinese Secret, Burn Your Bridges and did some strange solo noise stuff as Jesus Philbin. He also filled in for Doug in Hellnation for a while. His best stuff, if you ask me, is the East West Blast Test project with Dave Witte from Discordance Axis on drums. Anyone remotely interested in weird fast music should pick that disc up.

I can't even get past the first paragraph. There are soo many fucking problems. First off Fat made a big ass deal about the re-issue. I remember recieving several e-mails about it as well as seeing it all up on their website. Secondly fat floats as would Butterbean. Thirdly, don't try and use big words, they don't work for you.

P.S. I even like NUFAN for godsakes.

Sorry if I came off as anti-Spazz? I love them with my whole heart. I need to find one of their records soon, or I just won't know what to do with myself.

This is one of the worst albums I've ever heard. Damn this band used to suck. Well, they still suck, but at least they've managed to put out a few decent songs in their current lineup.

Chris Dodge was in this band was also in Spazz. I wouldn't call Spazz a chaotic mess. They are like a perfectly-honed buzz bomb of thrash madness.

Now Larm, on the other hand...
