Street Dogs - State of Grace

Snorecore is a very amusing term that I’ve noticed popping up around the ‘Org recently. I’m assuming it is meant to describe a boring ass, lethargic band that you just can’t get into. Now, most weeks I’d be defending Death Cab For Cutie from such an A.D.D.-inspired term. I’d be stressing Ben Gibbard’s quirky, bittersweet lyrics, Chris Walla’s genius arrangements, or Jason McGregor’s upbeat and always interesting drumming so that I could try to convince you guys that Death Cab can do oh so much and the fact that you get bored while listening to them disheartens me (maybe you need huge music dork headphones like me?). On a normal day I’d be calling Sickboi out to the streets for another rap battle. But the truth is that since I started college and moved into my dorm room, Plans, the band’s first major label release, is about the only thing that helps me sleep at night.

Sadly, there really aren’t any surprises on this new release. Death Cab is the same atmospheric, melancholy little indie rock band they were on Transatlancism, and Ben Gibbard is still using his post-Postal Service “mature” writing voice. The biggest difference here though is that Gibbard is no longer musing about his lost loves, because it appears he’s found love. So in true self-destructive form, most of the songs on Plans are about the end of his current relationship. Throughout the album Gibbard is constantly touching upon when he and his lover will both die. And like always, he is bittersweet and pretty (if you put this CD on when a chick is around, she may even just wanna make out with you, this of course pending if she’s actually thinking out the words to the songs), but he really hits a home run with “Brother’s On A Hotel Bed.” In this elegant ballad, Ben tells the tale of a couple who’s grown old and can’t find what they loved in each other years before;

You may tire of me…because I’m not who I used to be. No longer easy on the eyes but these wrinkles masterfully disguise the youthful boy below, who turned your way and saw something he was not looking for: Both a beginning and an end. But now he lives inside someone he does not recognize when he catches his reflection on accident.
The truth is that even though on this release Death Cab can almost sound like a distorted, jangled out Iron & Wine (especially on track 2, “Soul Meets Body”), Plans could very well just have been Transatlanticism 2. And that’s disappointing. It’s like when I went to see "Spiderman 2" and I basically paid to see the original movie twice (I was pissed). It’s the same thing but with more tweaks and bigger special effects. Not to get all Long Islandy, but it’s deja entendu all over again. My biggest problem with this album seems to be that it’s not the best album of the year. All year I’ve been waiting to get this CD to come out so that I could marvel at how beautiful it is. And while I do marvel at times (the bass line on “Summer Skin” gives me the shivers) something just feels wrong. Given the cast of characters it could have been a much more inspired release.

All in all, Death Cab For Cutie is still a competent indie rock band and Plans is a decent release for them. The kids will gobble it up. Seth Cohen will have a host of brand spanking new lyrics to quote so he can sound “witty” and “cute” (I’m being ironic, I don’t watch "The OC," shut up). The album is certainly no flop, and I imagine in a year or so we’ll be hearing about the plans for another new CD. Maybe I won’t get my hopes so high up in 2007, and maybe by then DCFC will stop ripping off A Wilhelm Scream…

Death Cab for Cutie is the SHIT! They're 1 of my favorite bands of all time (and I don't have a whole lot, just a handful). I honestly can't see how someone can't like...hell, love them. I do admit that Plans isn't my favorite DCFC album, Transatlanticism and We Have the facts... are two of my absolute favorites. Come on, "Tiny Vessels", "Champagne from a paper cup", "Company Calls Epilogue" , "Bend to Squares", "Title Track", "We looked Like Giants", those are fuckin great songs especially tiny vessels and Champagne from a paper cup. I didn't have a favorite singer/songwriter until Ben Gibbard, I really like Gwen Stefani (yeah I like Gwen so fuck whoever finds that funny), but I didn't exactly worship her ability like Ben's. I'm somewhat new to DCFC though I haven't heard the "photobooth" album, and I'm just now listenting to "Something About Airplanes", but they're FUCKIN INSANELY GREAT. Bottom line if you don't Love DCFC then your music preference is...I don't know, somewhere else. They're insanely good.

It was hard to follow transatlanticism. That album was great. But so is Plans. If you don't like Plans why are you posting on punknews.org under the review for it. You obviously are interested in it somewhat. what have you accomplished by knocking it. Remember.. before you become harsh with your judgements, your opinions are just opinions. Chill out.

i'm just listening to plans for the first time while i read all these comments... it's definitely not as good as their last but really how could it be. that doesn't make it bad though. I'm digging it for what it is.

i agree with the guy a bunch of posts down about Mark Lanegan's Bubblegum. If you like that you should also try Twilight Singer's Blackberry Belle... he does a song with Greg Dulli on it.

This and transatlaticism are quite different. Other than that, okay review. Even though I would rate it so much higher.

As a long time death cab fan I thought I'd chip in seeing how most of you are punk fans determined to hate dcfc regardless. That said, it's a pretty mediocre album. There's nothing terribly wrong with it, but there's very little right with it. I'm no writer so I can't really express it better then that, sorry. Not recommended.

Boring sleeptastic overly earnest nonsense. Kind of like that second Spider-Man movie minus the action scenes. Actually, scratch that. The second Spiderman movie dragged out the angst waaaay too long and was an overrated bore but I'd watch it again whereas I refuse to sit through another Death Cab or Postal Service song.

Ben Gibbard is a racist homophobe.

that is why I hate this band.

well maybe not, but I certainly know enough about music to know that this band is boring, unoriginal, and has so much forced "emotion" that it is completely void of it.

Green goblin didn't mean to be evil.
Doc Ock, Nope, it all went so horrible wrong.
Hobgoblin won't 'want' to be evil either.

Venom? He's a regular guy with a parasite.

CANT WE JUST HAVE ONE GUY WHO WANTS TO RAPE MURDER TORCH RAPE, AND DESTROY RAPE WITH TORCHING MURDERED RAPISTS?

Oh, i haven't seen it, but does the OC actually quote lyrics? I thought it was like song during credits type of thing.

anyway, listen to a random 20 seconds of each song, and you get 12 of the same song. Not horrible, but nothing to wake up before 3 PM for.

It's called a B-side. It was released as an iTunes exclusive because it didn't make the cut for the actual album. Meaning, someone who actually knows something about music (not you, clearly) acknowledged that it wasn't as good as the other songs.

death cab's older stuff was decent, but transatlanticism was so flamingly bland. the lyrics were trying way too hard to be clever and ended up coming off as really pretentious and, other than title & registration, the music was in no way engaging or interesting, just really dull. it wasn't a bad album, but it was pretty damn mediocre. i highly doubt this record will be any better.

Spiderman 2 was an overall good sequel - for a superhero franchise. Even though the acting was subpar, the storyline, the action, the characters evolution and the special effects made up for it. Spiderman 3 should rip though, especially since Topher Grace was added to the cast.

New Kanye West is great but is still overhyped. Dude spits his heart out, but struggles to spit quotables (Kanye is outshined on every guest track). Production is top-notch though.

New DCFC is aiight, but is still music for pussies.

You went and saw a SEQUEL and complain about it being like the first one.

Well excuse me for wanting to see progression and change instead of the same kind of Peter suffering for Mary Jane shit. Excuse me for being a tad put off that the movie followed the exact same formula as it flowed from begginning to end. I can assure I have common sense, and while my taste in movies is not as knowledgeable or as refined as my taste in music Spiderman 2 fucking sucked. Now shut the fuck up and eat your pie bitch.

Posted by sickboi on 2005-08-30 13:39:20

Spidey 2 had better action sequences, actual acting, and a better story.

The problem? Fucking Peter Parker taking his mask off for EVERYONE.

Venom is gonna make the 3rd movie the best.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at 1:31 PM (EDT)

How is Spiderman 2 like the first one? They both have a web slinging hero who wears red and blue?

You went and saw a SEQUEL and complain about it being like the first one. Well all your credibility went out the window with me right there. You're obviously not the kind of person that is any kind of position to tell anyone else about the quality of a cd. With your common sense being so low and all.

It's not laziness by any means - it's done for a reason, to connect the dots for readers who have a less intimate knowledge of what's being discussed. Band comparisons are helpful as a qualifying mechanism, and also help elucidate the tastes of the review - they are much more than mere shortcuts.

this album is great. not in the same vein as transatlanticism, more reverting to the somberness of the photo album or airplanes. great cd though. "what sarah said" is an amazing song. all in all, i disagree with the reviewer, but not for the obvious reasons. he said that this album is mostly about a current relationship, and seeing her die. i think, this album is about death in general. it's about coming to terms with mortality, and leaving behind a wake of troubled mourners and sadness.

This is Jonathan from the band Down To Earth Approach.... i'm not afraid to say that this record is possibly the album of the year. You're all crazy if you don't see it... Summer Skin, I Will Follow You Into The Dark, Your Heart Is An Empty Room, Brothers On A Hotel Bed, AND Stable Song (even better then it's original- stability) are all SO FUCKING AMAZING that you'd be crazy not to realize their genious. This record may not have the quirky flair that you desire in a death cab record, but it definitely makes up for it with some of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard. Definitely give it a chance, because it's like finding true love in a record.

Sickboi, cause he's a person and not a reference. He does not need to be researched or looked up in the archives to get the remark.

how could you compare this to spiderman 2?
Spiderman 2 was a great movie in that it showed how flawed peter parker is.
anyways. this cd is pretty good. not great but an enjoyable listen none the less

this band fucked themselves by ever releasing transatlanticism

simply because it's better than anything they'll ever release from here on out

after the first three songs, this thing DRAGSSSSSS

Posted by Marlon on 2005-08-30 00:19:32

The reference has nothing to do with Brand New's CDs per say, but the term "Deja Entendu" is like "Deja Vu" but meaning something you've "heard before" instead of "seen before" thus why deja entendu is not italaicized or capitalized like a CD title.

Deja Entendu doesn't sound like Your Favorite Weapon. Either I misunderstood what you were saying or you didn't listen to both releases.

I may get this. Or I may get one of their older CDs. All I have now is Transatlanticism. What should I do?

I love death cab, but apart from like 3 songs, i can not get into this at all

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at 12:16 AM (EDT)

Death Cab is just music for girls with absent father syndrome and huge vaginas.

    Nothing more, nothing less.
