Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell (Deluxe)
Register to Vote: Rock the Vote, powered by Credo Mobile

It’s no secret: Between The Buried And Me want to challenge you. They want to obliterate your senses with their blast beats, frantic yet bone-crushing guitar work, shrieked and gurgled screams, and monumental hardcore anthems that sometimes double a standard track’s length. And yet, you know what to expect when you pop in a disc by these guys. Alaska is no different from the band’s first two releases, but with some tweaked songwriting and a more coherent sound when compared to the disappointing The Silent Circus, Between The Buried And Me have cooked up some of their most enjoyable material to date.

Not unlike the band’s previous efforts, Alaska is an exceedingly difficult listen. For fifty-three minutes, Between The Buried And Me rip through eleven tracks of (for the most part) pure fury, with mixed results. There’s honestly not a bad song to be found here; the problem is that a handful of songs on Alaska follow the exact same pattern, dragging on for way too long with little variety. Songs like “Roboturner” and “Autodidact” drag on for five and a half, even seven minutes with little rising and falling action. When you are as brutal sounding of a band as Between The Buried And Me, even the most weathered of ears needs a rest every once in a while. It’s simply a case of too much, too soon with some of these songs. Even with exceptional musicianship, the not-so-good tracks showcased here can feel like hours long.

To no one’s surprise, the better songs on Alaska are the ones which switch it up a bit; “Selkies: The Endless Obsession” opens with a minute and a half of nifty dueling guitar play before vocalist Tommy Rogers enters with his trademark lullaby voice to screaming to growling tendencies. With this song, length is not an issue -- the band throws enough into the mix to keep the listener interested and not bore them. Among the other standouts are “Backwards Marathon,” another eight and a half minute behemoth which boasts a very creepy, atmospheric bridge with Rogers crooning "It’s raining…" over echoed guitar lines, and “Alaska,” which is nothing more than a straight-ahead skull crusher that knows just when to stop. The showstopper, however, is buried towards the end of Alaska (which is unfortunate, because many will no doubt give up by this point), titled “The Primer.” It brings back the melodic yet heavy guitar play found on what is probably the band’s most popular song, “Aspirations,” and is exciting from start to finish.

Just stating that this band is talented is simply not enough. Alaska will truly blow you away with how well the band members play their instruments. For those looking for nothing more than a well-performed album, they should look no further. However, coupled with a more focused approach to their next album, Between The Buried And Me could create an album which would sit at the upper echelon of albums for its respective year. Until then, Alaska will have to keep our bombastic hardcore needs fulfilled, and for many, that may not sound like too great of a deal.

Standout Tracks:

  • “Selkies: The Endless Obsession”
  • “The Primer”
  • “Alaska”
  • “Backwards Marathon”

just for fun i read almost all of the posts for this album...practically all of you are complete morons...first off i don't want to hear anything about oldschool hardcore..generic metalcore...fairweather..or whatever else you newjacks are trying to compare this band too...im sure all of you are just amazing musicians and you know soooo much...dream theatre a joke hahahaha..dream theatre is one of the most talented group of guys ever put together...but anyways between the buried and me is nothing but talent...you say btbam sucks because why??what was that you dont like their name...you don't like btbam abbreviation o boo hoo thats a real good reason to dislike a band...WOW... i havent heard anything that sounds remotely convincing.....since the music all of you listen to is sooo much better why don't you list a few i am very curious...well i would expound on how amazing this band is but it's not that important...so why don't each of you go pop in some bleeding through or atreyu and shoot yourself...because thats about as good as it gets in your cd case

The new Minus the Bear isn't THAT good.

    My Score:

Ok I think this cd is awesome. I think Between the Buried and Me is awesome.

Also, don't compare this to old hardcore. It sounds nothing like old hardcore. It's all awesome, but I think it's more of a metal album.

Not to mention some this stuff is hard to play and write. People shouldn't give this band shit at all.

This is my opinion,if you don't like it, then please curl up into a beetle position in the middle of a four way intersection.

Posted by lou on 2005-10-07 18:59:22

okay, i've always avoided listening to this band pretty much because of their name, because when it comes right down to it, you can usually judge a book by its cover. i like this cd more than i thought i would though.

the kid below me is right, but he obviously doesn't read that many reviews on this site.

Rush is the worst band ever. They are terrible because each member of that band is so insanely talented they could populate entire genres with their talents alone. Yet, somehow, when stuck together in a studio or on a stage they cannot compose anything that isn't short of irritating drivel.

Today I was practicing with a drummer and he put on some Dream Theater DVD...

What a fucking joke of a band. Same goes for Rush.

These are the least talented compositions I've ever heard. Throwing together some solos and having a lame 4 chord chorus are for the birds.

The drummer was telling me that "people want transitions!"... Once again, what a fucking joke.

Music like this sucks because you walk away from the songs not remembering what you just heard. All you know is that you didn't like it, so you don't do it again.

"im so cool, i can name all the old school hardcore bands. I must be really scene!!

comparing old school hardcore to between the buried and me is pretty pointless..... one band plays 3 chords where as BTBAM play all that in one part. And vocally they are singing about politics, while BTBAM are singing about who the fuck cares......
OLD SCHOOL HARDCORE is all vocals
BTBAM is more focused on their instruments
you cant fault either but you cant really compare them"

um, i listed 3 of the most popular hardcore bands in punk history. your average 14 year old kid getting started on punk can recognize them. how that suddenly makes me mr. high and mighty "scene" is quite laughable.

no little grasshopper, the difference between all the bands i "name" dropped and this new breed of "hardcore" isn't vocal style or topical matter or whatever else your deluded little mind can think of. the aforementioned bands are still punk bands. pure and simple. go ahead and get your rocks off to atreyu or every time i die or 18 visions or whatever faux pop metal lite band that tries to attach its name to hardcore PUNK. we all know what is what.

    My Score:

if your trying to say these guys are lazy songwriters.....well thats kinda hard for me to believe. I play guitar and the amount of time for making a BTBAM song would be ALOT more then writing a converge song. I kind of see where you guys are coming from since they never repeat a single part so it sometimes sounds like randomness. But chaotic metalcore is supposed to be like that and with release they added alot more of a progressive feel which i find comendable. But this is all coming from a person who liked silent circus and the reviewer thought that was disappointing so............

Posted by McGarnicle on 2005-09-16 19:42:41

Am I the only one here who kinda stays away from really long band names that imply death? If these guys were named The Boners or The Penises or even The Wangs I'd probably be into them. The point is...less long death names and more short penis (that doesn't sound good) names

Why should people want to listen to "challenging" music anyway? There is a happy middle ground between simple pop-punk riffs and over the top technicality, yet almost every new band is either "stripped down" or tech-metal.

hey there mister i know everything....Dream Theater is spelled like this

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, September 16, 2005 at 1:17 PM (EDT)

this band is not that good. they are part of the new school of tech metal/hardcore bands that think throwing together lots of parts and using odd time signatures is enough to make good songs. it's not. the original wave of these bands was able to do weird and interesting things while still making interesting and cohesive songs. BTBAM are just lazy song-writers who just toss things together with no rhyme or reason and frankly it's BORING. i don't care if they're good musicians, that's not enough. if good musicianship was all i wanted, i'd be listening to dream theatre or something. i want good songs and this band can't deliver. i'll stick with converge or coalesce.
