The Clash; you may not like them, but you have to admire them. Along with the Sex Pistols, the New York Dolls and others, they brought punk to the "mainstream" and made what real punk now stands for. But more than being a simple punk band, they brought ska, dub and reggae into their music, bringing ska-punk along in their stride.

This CD is a compilation of live shows from all over the world (NY, London and Boston). You can hear all the classics, which I don't need to tell you how good they are, and other great songs: "London's Burning" (with some great vocals by the great Joe Strummer), "Clash City Rockers" (the great intro, yes), "(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais" (one of the greatest ska-punk songs ever, in my humble opinion), "City of the Dead" (just great), "I Fought the Law" (some great drumming), "London Calling" (with THE intro of punk history), "Armagideon Time" (some great reggae with some nice bass-work), "Train in Vain" (very nice drum-guitar duo), "Guns of Brixton" (woa! who doesn't like that one!), "Know Your Rights" (great "public announcement" done by with a guitar), "Should I Stay or Should I Go" (excellent, excellent) and to close it off, "Straight to Hell."

Now, you may be thinking "Hey, hasn't he just said that 12/17 songs were simply awsome and great?" Isn't he kind maybe a fanatic? No, I'm not a fanatic. Yet in an age where bands such as Simple Plan and all the other Blink-182s and Good Charlottes are thought of as the symbols of punk, it's good to hear some awesome, simple yet smart and political "real punk". They sing about politics ("City of the Dead," "Straight to Hell," "I Fought the Law," "London Calling") and "silly" things ("Should I Stay or Go") and influenced bands ranging from Rancid to the Libertines, passing by Celtas Cortos and the Suicide Machines. The Clash did what many bands weren't able to do: Be influenced, have their own sound, stick to it and then influence others.

"I fail to see what's so punk rock about the Clash. I mean, everyone's heard of them. My grandmother knows about them for chrissakes, and she's 75. Isn't punk based on being unknown? Fuck the Clash; they're bigger than Good Charlotte."

That is extremely retarded. For one, you don't have to be "Unkown" to be punk, there are plenty of bands that are known that have earned the "Punk" title. And anyways, half the kids at my school dont even know who the fuck The Clash is!

Anyways, this album is one of my favorites, it has alot of their good songs (and some of their bad ones) I think they could have picked a better version of "Guns of Brixton" just because the vocals bug me and I've heard Paul do them better live.

I'll confess enjoying Mondo Bizzarro as well. The "Touring" RNR high school rip off, and it's funny because if you listen to "I can't wait till tomorrow", it's Misfits I turned into a Martian with different words. That always made me laugh. Gabba Gabba Hey

Whoops, my bad. Maybe I should post after I've had a cuppa coffee next time. Okay, Animal Boy DOES have "Somebody Put Something In My Drink" & the title track, but Halfway to Sanity has Bop Til You Drop, Weasel Face, Garden of Serenity, I Know Better Now, and Go Lil Camaro Go.

Brain Drain is also criminally underrated with Merry Christmas I Don't Wanna Fight Tonight, Zero Zero UFO, Pet Cemetary, Don't Bust My Chops, Come Back Baby, and their version of Palisades Park.

I'd say the next listenable Ramones record was Adios Amigos.

Posted by housewrecker on 2005-10-25 15:39:14

I LOVE Too Tough to Die. Dangers of Love, No Go, Chasin' the Night are some of my favorite underated Ramones pop songs. I guess we're off topic here, but it's cool when people actually know good music.

Posted by TheOneTrueBill on 2005-10-25 15:27:04

I don't know, I always felt that Animal Boy was the best of the Richie era. Too Tough To Die has a few too many slooooooow songs and Halfway to Sanity seems kind of bland. Maybe I'm just biased because Animal Boy was my first Ramones album outside of the first four.

But you're right, Go Lil' Camero Go is a great song.

Posted by housewrecker on 2005-10-25 14:11:13

It's Go little Camero Go. And Merry Xmas was on Brain Drain, their next album. Both albums are great....Animal Boy does have Something to Believe In though....

"Funny thing: I used to think Joe Stummer's lyrics sucked, but then looked at the rest of the 76-78 bands... I think only Crass stands up to them in that department, and maybe the Sex Pistols. And Crass sure as hell could not play as well."

I was looking through the liner notes of Stations of Crass the other day and just noticed that that cd's lyrics read like a big article and a good one at that.

Posted by lushj on 2005-10-25 11:14:49

"Woah woah woah, you like Halfway to Sanity better than Animal Boy? Are you nuts?!?!"

I'm crazy for Halfway to Sanity- "Hey Little Camaro Go" with Deborah Harry? "Merry Christmas I Don't Want To Fight Tonight"? Ramones pop radness! I thought Animal Boy was a little blah (though it has some good tunes).

Posted by housewrecker on 2005-10-25 11:08:17

LushJ you are right on again. I don't just kiss your ass cuz I was a criminals fan either.

I do agree that SOME people say they like the Clash because it's instant cool points. Like when a glam rock band wears a Ramones or CBGBs T-shirt. The reason certain bands give instant cool points from cool people is not always totally unfounded. They actually ARE that cool. It's not a matter of saying everything old is better. Clash were fusing reggae and latin influences when a lot of today's hit bands are still stumbling trying to play power-chords. They really did have something to offer. Stiff Little Finger knew how to craft a well-written pop-song too. The early 90s DIY scene made it uncool to know anything about music. You had to play a pawn shop guitar and if you ever studied music or took a lesson you were a poser sellout. That's gone now and the Clash are one of those standout bands who could actually play.

Posted by inanechild on 2005-10-25 07:43:18

I don't understand this trend, especially among newer punk fans, to dismiss older bands as being overrated and any fans of those bands as merely trying to "prove cred." Although I'm a fan of older punk, there are plenty of bands I think have an unjustified legacy, but I have no interest in bitching on every review page. It smacks of simply trying to loudly justify why you don't know anything pre-Nirvana than actually expressing an opinion, and as the Godfather said, there's a website for kids like that...

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 25, 2005 at 12:08 AM (EDT)

Yeah, anyone who doesn't like the Clash for one of their forms (be it punk, pop-rock, hip hop or white boy dub) is is undeniably musically underdeveloped.

Funny thing: I used to think Joe Stummer's lyrics sucked, but then looked at the rest of the 76-78 bands... I think only Crass stands up to them in that department, and maybe the Sex Pistols. And Crass sure as hell could not play as well.

    My Score:

Musically, you're dead to me if you have heard the Clash and can completely dismiss them. Ditto Devo. Sorry, that's the way it is. I think that's echoed by others here. They aren't necessarily the greatest every single moment ("Cut The Crap", 4/5ths of "Sandinista"), but that makes them even better 'cause they AREN'T superhuman.

The Clash are the Batman of music, cause while they aren't perfect at least they aren't Superman- the dude who has super-everything powers and is boring as all get-out to read because he can do everything. Batman (and The Clash, and The Ramones, and Devo) fucked up enough to make it interesting. Would "Halfway to Sanity" be better than "Animal Boy"? (Thank Ramone it was GREAT!) Would "Wombat Cock" be more cohesive- er, listenable- than "Sandinista"? Whew!

So yeah, this live record is 8/10. As rad as the live 1980 Devo record. Not as rad as Ramones "It's Alive" (though that's one of the best live records ever). The new live Dictators? Fucking rad- at least a 7 or 8 outta 10.

Exactly. They're one of the few bands from this era that these kids are familiar with though, so its why they choose to like them instead of other underground punk bands that people have forgotten about.

Man I can't believe all this Clash dissing. When I was younger I only liked their first album because it was the only one "punk" enough for me. When I got older I learned a lot about music, studied a lot of history, and traveled more of the world and then the songs REALLY hit home, musically and lyrically. LIstening to Spanish Bombs in the south of the Andalucia part of Spain while drinking tinto veranos in the sun is about as awesome as life can get.

What's with all of the anti-Clash sentiment? You people who hate them are either 15 or have really bad taste in music. Chinatown, you call them generic pop rock, but also think that Twin Cinema is the album of the year?

Maybe some of you don't like them because you don't think that they're punk. That's mostly true, their self-titled was their only punk album and the song "All The Young Punks" from Give 'em Enough Rope was basically their way of telling the world that they had moved on. Calling them punk is really just a courtesy because their first album was so influential and so important to the development of the genre. So if that's the case and you only like punk, maybe you should try something else, give this band a proper listen. You must be very bored. And if you're 15 (or so) in a couple of years it's going to hit you and you'll tell all of your peers that you've been a life-long fan.

i think youve got things a bit backwards. when i was 15, i was really into the clash, to the point where i went through 3 tapes of london calling.
then as i got older, i realized there were better lyricists out there, and i also had the desire to listen to heavier music.
i dont hate the clash, but i wouldnt put them in my top 5, or even my top 20(just speaking of bands from the 78-85 era, even). there's better stuff out there. so people dont like it? big deal, no reason to get your diaphragm in a wad.

The title "From Here to Eternity" originally comes from a 1953 movie about military men in Hawaii in 1941 right before Pearl Harbor. Also unrequited love and backstabbing, etc. innocence about to be lost.

You all would recognize the super famous scene of two leads kissing while laying down on the beach and the wake washing up against them. It's used in almost every single one of those movie montages that the studios release to celebrate however many decades of movies they've made to touch different generations, etc.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 23, 2005 at 5:29 PM (EDT)

did they get it from here?

i think the title "from here to eternity" is bigger than just being the title of a clash album...

Now, really, no one actually thinks (and this includes the youth) that Simple Plan and Good Charlotte, etc. are "the symbols of punk."

This is a solid disc, but do people who have it along with a heavy Clash collection actually find themselves listening to it? I don't. I tend to listen to the classic albums (S/T, London Calling, Combat Rock, Sandinista).

yeah, I bashed blink 182, but not for not being original (which they aren't really anyway), but for being THE mainstream name in punk music. When you ask a non-punk fan if they like punk, they'll probably say:" what, like Blink 182?". That's irritating.

    My Score:

Part of what made this one so perfect was that it didn't turn into a live "greatest hits" record, but covered a lot of their best material. A lot of these live albums turn into a singles showcase, but this one really manages to provide a solid overview of the band and it doesn't hurt that it sounds amazing.

"Be influenced, have their own sound, stick to it and then influence others."

You bash Blink182, but is that not what they have accompished in a way with the 10,000 clone pop punk bands out there? Just a thought.

    Moo

I love this album. While they put a little too many songs off the first album on there, it's still got great sound quality.

This is a ridiculously good album. I got it when I was still kind of new to punk rock, so it helped me to appreciate the Clash a lot. Some of their studio recordings were still a bit "out there" for me to appreciate at the time, but when I heard them in a stripped down setting I grew to know and love them. Then I went back to the records (Sandinista! in particular) and loved them.

    True story.
