Drama, the suicide of original drummer Derrick Plourde a couple months ago, was the catalyst for Joey Cape's inspiration to write this 9th full-length of my (once) holy Lagwagon. And never in my 37-year old life have I been moved as much by music and especially these lyrics as with these dozen songs that are so much more than an epitaph on a great musician's grave. For me, while I never actually knew the guy, it's not the homage to Plourde that really touched me, but we all are pretty aware of what sorrow an act like this causes to all people close to him. And that's what comes through in these songs as far as I'm concerned; in the first place the unbelief, the questions unresolved and the doubts that clearly haunt Joey, but also the comfort he's offering to Plourde's relatives and his attempt to rid them of their guilty feelings. I'm not an emotional guy really, but these lyrics really gave me the shivers at times.

ok you dumbass anonymous people...if a song doesnt have emotions then it sucks so dont call it emo. if your best friend kills himself and you write a song about it im gonna laugh when ppl make fun of you for being"emo" we cant all just write songs about the government and stuff...plz.. this album carries the same lagwagon taste with a different feel. darker and deeper. yet stil amazing For whatever reason Lagwagon has never done it for me, although I think they're pretty good. But the track Never Stops is awesome live. I heard it on the Fat X-Mas comp and they pretty much out-NOFX NOFX (or at least NOFX of the last 7-10 years) amazing record. not as catchy as previous albums...but so damn good. One of the greatest albums ever, no doubt in my mind. shit man lagwagon are shit. listen to them it is shit. shit band that every yank seems to love. Awesome CD. I can't stop listening. People need to lighten up. We all view life differently and like different stuff. I didn't rate this until after 2 months of listening. Then seeing 2 live shows in Australia including 1 in Geelong with around 200 people where people were falling down onto the stage. Then listening to it again. Sad Astronaut makes me cry. Itīs real emotional hardcore music. This is an album that shitty emo bands would like to make. Itīs real emotional hardcore music. This is an album that shitty emo bands would like to make. Took about four solid listens to realize just how much I love this album. That's certainly not a bad thing, especially considering that I would have been taken by it right away if I had read the liner notes during the initial listen. This is a great album both musically and lyricly with an obvious genuine passion flowing through it...i dont understand the negative comments that say "eeww fukin emo"...these very same people would be slagging it off if Lagwagon made a happier album like "Duh" The most tragic loss for Lagwagon is their sense of melody. ahhhhh good album... i admit it cudda been a little better but theres too many good songs. Automatic and Heartbreaking music took a little while to get used to, but there great. Resolve, Sad Astronaut, Rager, the Worst, Creepy and finally the Days of new are greattt. Days of new and sad astronaut are two of the best Lagwagon songs ever. i just bought "resolve" and listened to it once while reading the lyrics. for some reason, i get emotional listening to bad astronaut records and "blaze," and this one continued that trend. i never really got into old lagwagon stuff (my brother has been listening to all their old shit for years.), mostly because of the rougher-edged vocals, novelty songs, and straight punkishness. if "blaze" had no novelty songs ("e-dagger" and the one about getting old) and "houston, we have a drinking problem" didn't have the covers (though "break your frame" is kinda good) and that shitty song, "if i had a son," they would be perfect albums. derrick was a phenomenal drummer, and bad astronaut's arrangements and vibe of sincerity make them one of my top five bands... of aaaall TIIIIIIIIIIIIME! but, seriously, what i've read about derrick as a person and the secret track from acrophobe lead me to think he was a great person to be around and a great loss to all who knew him. "resolve" kicks some butt. Ok, I've had time to let it sink in. I don't think Fallen is on anyone's album. I believe it is an iTunes exclusive. Somebody who has it, please post it as an mp3... I have heard the song Fallen. Its a pretty good. So who has actually heard the song "Fallen"? Its not on my album although it is on the iTunes tracklisting and apparently on some people's albums. the closest thing we'll get to a "new" bad astronaut record probably. word on the street is they are releasing the "last" album they recorded a few years back though. I think Lag will do atleast one more cd, but if not it's a great album to finish with like that dude said. Bad Astronaut is over(hope to god they put the cd out). I'd love to see Joey take over vocals for the gimmes, or maybe just sing a few songs. Spike is awesome but no-one can beat Joey. Can't wait till they tour here again! "am i the only one who finds this album really fucking good, but it took like 5 listens to realize that? I thought it was average on first listen, pretty good on second...now i'm like really stoked on it. 'infectious' and 'days of new' are incredible. "I haven't listened to Lagwagon since Blaze, but I used to love them" i guess it is emo, being that its emotional songs written in response to the suicide of a friend. jesus you guys are stupid assholes Not, "emo", but definitely horrid. this gets my "boring album of the year" award i'm gonna keep runnin my mouth for a bit here. "Trashed and Duh are really over rated albums. It's cool to say Trashed is the best, but it kinda sucks!" am i the only one who finds this album really fucking good, but it took like 5 listens to realize that? I thought it was average on first listen, pretty good on second...now i'm like really stoked on it. 'infectious' and 'days of new' are incredible. 1. Hoss hosssss 1) Hoss 2) Let's Talk 3) Double 4) Blaze 5) Trashed 6) Duh 1) Trashed 2) Hoss 3) Resolve 4) Double Plaidinum 5) Duh 6) Let's Talk 7) Blaze I have to be honest double plaidnum is my favorite (maybe because of one time "special guest" member Ken Stringfellow, of the Posies, plays lead guit on the album, maybe becauase the production is like nothing in the wagon discography) but its my favoirite, contoversial I know. Lagwagon was my favorite band about 5 years ago, more into the whole indie-rock scene now, but joey cape (lead singer) still remains the best lyricist i have ever read/heard. Jesse the bassist inspired me to play bass, I love this band. Order goes this way folks... 1) Double Plaidnum 2) Trashed 3) Hoss 4) Lets Talk About Feelings 5) Lets Talk About Leftovers 6) Blaze 7) Duh (maybe classic, but by far their worst production, and the worst lyrically, and muscially) I have not heard Resolve, ordered it off Fat to get the band autograph it for free, but I think It will be somewhere among the best. Really my list between 2-4 are interchangable depending on your mood. I love the Caper. 37 eh....probably shouldve already settled down with a wife and family, dug a pool in the backyard, paid off the minivan and have an old dog thats ready to die rather then posting rediculous threads on how all the wagons new songs sound like violins because its the only song other then "that lagwagon song off tony hawk 2" that you are familiar with NO! don't start w/ the live album. fuck no. their lyrics are such a huge part of who they are and the cohesion of a single album is much better than starting on a live album. their live album is the best of the live in a dive series, but i dont think it would be the best starting point....you should probably just buy all of em.....i dont like to promote this, but if you're low on cash, then you could download the torrent file with the complete discography so "'hoss" would be better to buy then the live one? i am kinda partial to live cd's. 'hoss' is the most logical place to start. 'trashed' and 'duh' have a lot of goofy songs and more of a 'metal' type riff sound to them. they're both 'classic' i suppose but dont really represent where the band went w/ their sound afterwards and where they are now. Hoss and Trashed are so good it posted twice, I guess. i want to buy 1 lagwagon cd. which one do i buy? "i want to buy 1 lagwagon cd. which one do i buy?" i want to buy 1 lagwagon cd. which one do i buy? This is a really solid album, not that I'm surprised. I"ve always thought lagwagons early works were their weakest, and basically, joey cape has never disappointed me, even when his albums take a little longer to get into (talk about feelings). "it's down right fucking SNOOZER, I can't make it threw the first 4 songs without tossing this peice of 1996 onto the floor and actually playing a band worth listening too." this band has sucked since dudes were thrashin' on their skateboards long time ago. plllleaseeeeee....kill bands like this. not kill. that'd be mean. but die. or..i dont know..go away? There's may be only 12 tracks, but there are 14 songs" "There's may be only 12 tracks, but there are 14 songs" I'm listening to the stream now. After a couple listens, it sounds good, but not nearly as good as everyone is hyping it up to be. Granted, I haven't heard much previous Lagwagon, but this just seems pretty good. Hm. "fuck you dude...you'd be the same one whining if they changed thier sound in even the slightest way....lagwagon's music hasn't changed much, if any, over the years, but that's one of the reasons i love them so much" someone said 'blaze' came out in 2002 and gave that as the reason for arguing that it was a long time ago and he forgot about it. i'm pretty sure it came out in april of 2003. sorry buddy. "hoss and double pladinum sound pretty similar...not pennywise similar, but as in same band same style, no changes from left field...and then lets talk about feelings isnt too different from those..." this band has sucked since dudes were thrashin' on their skateboards long time ago. plllleaseeeeee....kill bands like this. not kill. that'd be mean. but die. or..i dont know..go away? Eh, good album, big improvement, not enough growling. MELODICY is not a word. Yet another example of the high caliber of writers (not) writing for this site. "There's may be only 12 tracks, but there are 14 songs" BTW, how do you know it's "intended" to sound like that? "it's polly, not teen spirit" (insert statement about AWS being better than Lagwagon) MELODICY is not a word. Yet another example of the high caliber of writers (not) writing for this site. 2 > 1 it makes me sad that not one, but two people said this: "Am I the only one who thinks the verses of "Automatic" sound exactly like "Smells Like Teen Spirit"?" MELODICY is not a word. Yet another example of the high caliber of writers (not) writing for this site. every hour or so, i find myself singing a different part of any given song on this album over and over in my head.... and i love it. The review is very telling, this sounds just like mid-90's Lagwagon. It's very very good but it's nothing spectacular. I wish it was longer than 12 songs but Lagwagon has never been known for long cd's. really kids. lagwagon has always had the same sound. stop overanalyzing a band that consistently puts out great records The review is very telling, this sounds just like mid-90's Lagwagon. It's very very good but it's nothing spectacular. I wish it was longer than 12 songs but Lagwagon has never been known for long cd's. What a heartfelt review. I haven't heard this yet, but I sure will. hoss and double pladinum sound pretty similar...not pennywise similar, but as in same band same style, no changes from left field...and then lets talk about feelings isnt too different from those... "lagwagon's music hasn't changed much, if any, over the years" i meant to put that first part in quotes in case you didnt figure that out This cd is pretty boring, great lyrics dont get me wrong but this the same Lagwagon cd i've heard a 10000 times. What's with all the hoopla? I really want a new Bad Astronaut record though, I hope Joey decides to make one soon. This cd is pretty boring, great lyrics dont get me wrong but this the same Lagwagon cd i've heard a 10000 times. What's with all the hoopla? arctic monkeys...... oh dear. oh dear oh dear I don't understand that hate that "Blaze" gets, I love that record and I thought it was a huge step up from "Let's Talk About Feelings" (which took me forever to warm up to.) I've only listened to "Resolve" a handful of times but I'm already really into it. If you like Lagwagon, there's no reason not to like this album. Ah it's all good Crooky. Trust that I don't take the ball busting to seriously, plus with the ammount of shit I drop on here a fair ammount is bound to be retarded. a great record. an unfortunate high point for Joey's songwriting. "Easy Crooky. Shouldn't you be drinking warm beer out of a bottle you opened with your insanely bad teeth, while enjoying a game of football and a basket of fish and chips, before eating some spotted dick for dessert? how can you review an album the day after it comes out? don't you need a little time to think about what you wanna say, or will the first opinion that pops in your head be the one you stick with forever? i dont know.... Easy Crooky. Shouldn't you be drinking warm beer out of a bottle you opened with your insanely bad teeth, while enjoying a game of football and a basket of fish and chips, before eating some spotted dick for dessert? Am I the only one who thinks the verses of "Automatic" sound exactly like "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? haha "Posted by Anonymous on 2005-11-01 00:53:53 i'd have sex with joey cape "Between Resolve, the stuffy and near-impenetrable Potemkin City Limits, and the utterly worthless NOFX singles club, I dont know which high profile old school Fat band to proclaim Biggest Dissapointment of the Year! Just another mediocre band trying to ride the coat tails from whatever previous success they had 10 years ago. I so listen to alot of music. Of course, it's ineveitable that I dont like everything. I am a long time fan of all three bands mentioned. Disappointment was the operative word, implying that the high hopes I had for all three of these releases were nowhere near met. Just offering an opinion. Between Resolve, the stuffy and near-impenetrable Potemkin City Limits, and the utterly worthless NOFX singles club, I dont know which high profile old school Fat band to proclaim Biggest Dissapointment of the Year! This is a great album, but not nearly as catchy or fun as any of their previous releases (go figure). The lyrics are beautiful though. I've had this for about two weeks now, and it's playing on my iPod every day at least two or three times. This album is some really heavy shit, emotionally, and musically Lag is at the top of their game. With all due respect to Joey Cape and sincere condolences for his loss, this album is full of rote, formulaic, and just plain boring songwriting. Anyone who sees this as an improvement over Blaze or as good as any of their early classics must be listening to a different record than I am. Between Resolve, the stuffy and near-impenetrable Potemkin City Limits, and the utterly worthless NOFX singles club, I dont know which high profile old school Fat band to proclaim Biggest Dissapointment of the Year! just listening to the stream, seems like there's at least a couple of good songs, but it's not that revolutionary, still a lot of whining and long intros, just better that the 2 last albums. ichfes responding to superdude is priceless I've heard that Joey wrote the album in a matter of days, not months. I think he wanted to pay tribute to his friend and it motivated him to put together the album more quickly than usual. 1. I hate how Van Morrison covered these guys. This review sucks. This review was pretty good, but here's how I would make it better: This cd has touched me. One of the most beautifully tragic cd's ever. Some of those stupid "emo" bands need to take a page from Lagwagon and find out that you can write touching lyrics without singing about girls and being one-dimensional. Fuck that, "Eat Your Words" does too. That whole 7" was a several-year-precursor to the sorrow of this full-length. Anyways, I love the Wagon. "A Feedbag Of Truckstop Poetry" belongs on this album TahoeJeff, you'll get no arguements from me abotu any Wagon album, i would give every single one gets at least an 8.5. "Duh" may place last just beuase it's a little too goofy here and there. I mailordered the album through Fat, but I didn't want to have the album out here and I couldn't wait to hear it, So I downloaded it off of Itunes as well. Fat lists 12 tracks on their website, Itunes lists 14. The obligatory acoustic swansong at the end is track 13, an acoustic version of "The Chemist". Track 14 is the fast one, and its called "Fallen". I can't say enough good things about this album. Lets Talk and Blaze both had AMAZING moments. The production of Double Plad is kinda iffy to me, Strung Out: re record Suburban and Twisted by Design. thanks and whats with the hate for Duh? I was just listening to that album yesterday, Its right up there with the rest of em. About the recording debate: i said this before but how can something so heavy-hearted and depressing make me so happy when i listen to it? this album is better than i ever expected it to be, and i expected it to be really good. i'm another one of the few people who liked "Blaze", and this blows it away. i might be something of a fanboy, but i don't see how anyone couldn't get at least some enjoyment out of this album. This album is great. Lagwagon - Resolve So the suicide, which inspired the songs, happened a "couple months ago?" Hm. Either this is the fastest record ever to be produced and released, or this reviewer screwed up his info. "Way to stick it to 'em by not listening to them since their last studio album. fucking intense album.. think what u must on this cd, but it is a great album i'm hoping if this is the end of lagwagon (which, if it is , i'm glad i'll be able to see them next week), that joey continues acoustically or with bad astronaut. his ep with tony sly and the song on the protect comp are outstanding, and anything acoustic he did with bad astronaut was spot-on. i'd have sex with joey cape "I haven't listened to Lagwagon since Blaze, but I used to love them" "I haven't listened to Lagwagon since Blaze, but I used to love them" but Lagwagon always has been more than "just another fun punk band," if you don't take their first release Duh into account I'd give this a 10. so, is this pretty much the last studio album for lagwagon? are they done? i had no clue derrick died by suicide, musta missed that, but holy shit this is a good fucking album. i still prefer hoss, but it's good to see lagwagon is back. Suicide? Ohhh, shit; I dunno where I was when that happened.... |
