Green Day (Logo)

Published on November 15th 2005

Now, as you can see by the title, this isn’t your standard concert review. A little back story, if you will.

A couple weeks ago, word traveled that Green Day would be coming to NYC to play on "Late Night with Conan O’Brien." In the past, when Green Day’s come for something like this, they like to do everything they can while they’re here -- play on "TRL," play secret shows, etc. So naturally, a few days later, word gets out that they’re going to be on "TRL" I was lucky enough to get in to see them play three songs on "TRL," which was pretty awesome too, but nothing could have prepared me for what was coming next.

It was announced that Green Day would be playing an hour-long show on FUSE for their show, "Comp’d." So, yeah, that’s pretty cool, right? There was a rumor going around that they were going to play American Idiot the whole way through. Having not been able to go to any of the club shows, this excited me greatly. I ended up going with a bunch of my friends; they were all able to get reservations, except for another friend and me, so we had to go stand by. I won’t go into too much detail on what I went through to get in, but we were the last two let in.

So, I was pretty excited at this point. Except for the three songs on "TRL," I hadn’t seen a real Green Day show in a year. Green Day’s shows are something that should be experienced as often as possible, if you ask me. So after a while of waiting, we were finally let inside the FUSE studio where "Comp’d" was to be taped. To give you an idea of just how tiny this concert was…there were 50 people inside this studio. Fifty. FUSE, being the awesome network that it is, ended up letting the entire standby line in a little bit later, but even then, there were maybe around a hundred people in the audience for this concert.

The taping was supposed to start at 4pm, but it didn’t actually get going ‘till maybe 4:30pm or 5pm, but no one really cared. Even before Green Day was anywhere near the stage, you could feel the energy emanating from this crowd. While there were a number of stupid fans who were pretty dead for the whole concert, the majority of the crowd consisted of the biggest, most hardcore Green Day fans you could imagine -- including me and my friends, of course.

Eventually Green Day took the stage, and the ride of my life began. FUSE was having us all stand behind this red line about five feet away from the stage, but right away Billie Joe said “fuck that,” and before anyone knew it, we were all practically ON this tiny stage. It was raised maybe a foot or two up. Excepting the American Idiot songs starting out the set, it felt like I’d stepped through a time warp back to before Dookie. After the requisite (but fantastic) AI songs were through, the band decided to complete this time warp feeling with a true blast to the past. Three songs from their first two albums were played back-to-back -- “Christie Road,” “Going to Pasalacqua,” (not even on the set list, they just felt like playing it for the hell of it!), and “Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?” The tiny crowd, intimate atmosphere, and old-school songs all added up to one of the most incredible musical experiences of my life. I never thought I’d see Green Day like this, but here I was, three feet away from Mike Dirnt. It really felt like a true club show, complete with people yelling out random shit and inane requests, and just chatting with the band members between songs.

After hearing a couple more songs I’d never heard live before (“Letterbomb”, “I Fought the Law” -- where did THAT one come from!?) and “Minority,” Billie Joe started asking for requests. After a few minutes of constant inaudible screaming, someone plainly yelled out for “Misery,” a song they’ve never played live. Until this concert, at least. That’s right, they played the deep album track from Warning, “Misery,” for the first and only time ever live. It was amazing, and pretty funny since Billie Joe forgot most of the words, leaving the crowd to take care of it for him. After “Misery” they went into “Homecoming,” another song I’d never heard live before, and that was that.

All in all, it was easily the best concert I’ve ever seen in my life. I’ve seen a lot of concerts. I’ve seen some pretty emotional ones, too. But this was something else. The band was obviously having the times of their lives (ba-dum, CHING!), Billie Joe did a crazy solo during the break down of "Minority," and Mike just improvised off his old bass lines on the older songs. Tre was just crazy, as always. The show airs December 4th on FUSE.

Oh, and it was free.

The almighty set list:

  • American Idiot
  • Holiday
  • Are We the Waiting
  • St. Jimmy
  • Give Me Novacaine
  • Longview
  • Welcome to Paradise
  • Christie Road
  • Going to Pasalacqua
  • Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?
  • Letterbomb
  • I Fought the Law
  • Minority
  • Misery
  • Homecoming

oh and Mr. "Will" they didnt sell out idiot, they wrote a song talking about bands that do "walking contradiction" they're still here and goin into studio soon to record follow up to american idiot. so blah ha, so make love to ur fall out boy cd or whatever u like

ruin punk?? fuckin idiot. they're the FIRST band to start punk then these new gay ass bands are ruining it, like for example, gay ass fall out boy and simple plan.

    My Score:

rolling stones play their own music. umm so does green day. the fact they need 3 to 4 or more extra people shows the talent they have. see, green day is the only band, unless u include blink, but they arent all that good in reality, where there is 3 members, most bands have two guitarists. billie joe writes rh. and lead parts, he does it all. kinda hard to do two at once dont u think?? lets get the facts straight. green day has been a band now for 17 years, not much longer than "metallica" who is great too, but at same time can really suck and be full of themselves just cuz they do "fast riffs" arent u cool. write american idiot than ill give u a prize. anyways, their shows we're spec, thie tour was over a year, and well they are all thats been talked about since 2004, havent heard much about anyone else, no "metal" bands, no rap faggots, or others. people just need to except it and realize their favorite "bands" just couldnt do it.

if you dont like bullet in a bible then you dont like green day at all.
simply put, this band was always huge and has now attained an even greater level of success than ever thought possible. while some of their records never caught the attention of ALL of their fans, this band maintained platinum status through kick ass rock singles. If you , especially someone from the Dookie days, cannot watch this band play in front of 65,000 people (who know all the words to all the songs) and be happy for them..then you do not like this band.

" Even the fucking Rolling Stones play their own music."

The RS have stage musicians AND backup singers.

Any band that records a song like Desensitized and then doesn't put it on the album deserves to have their eyeballs gouged out with a rusty screwdriver.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, November 18, 2005 at 11:50 PM (EST)

There seems to be some confusion as to whether we should like this band more or less now. I thought I'd lay out the arguments on either side of the argument.

Reasons to like Green Day since release of Am. Idiot:

    - Billie Joe lost some weight
    - They've stopped recording shitty acoustic music (Good Riddance, Macy's Day Parade)
    - Music on Am. Idiot is some good shit
    - Themes on Am. Idiot is some good shit
    - Story on Am. Idiot is some good shit
    - "We Are the Champions" on the setlist
    - They're now a political punk band
    - Awesome Live DVD/CD release "Bullet in a Bible"
    - Billie Joe stills humps the stage and puts his hands down his pants

Reasons to hate Green Day since release of Am. Idiot:

    - "Touring musicians"
    - Security detail to hustle band members away from fans after end of show (and this has been going on since the day Am. Idiot was released)
    - Pyrotechnics
    - Nazi-esque stage-art
    - Band uniforms
    - "Heeeyyyyyyyyyyyy-ooooooooooooooo"'s
    - "Shout" on the regular setlist
    - Their whole regular setlist
    - Asshole Sam Beyer is their video director of choice
    - With the exception of JoS, all AI videos were meaningless, irrelevant tripe
    - Vapid Live DVD/CD release "Bullet in a Bible"
    - Mike Dirnt still makes stupid moves whilst playing his bass
    - Billie Joe still insists Mike Dirnt is best bassist in punk rock (Matt Freeman is best bassist in punk AND rock)
    - Arena shows
    - No remastering of Kerplunck
    - Single-handedly pulled the plug on Lookout!

On balance, I think they even out. They definitely scored some points with the release of Am. Idiot, but have lost a lot of ground since with the silly arena-rock antics. Thus, I advise everybody not to change your opinion of Green Day based on what they've done over the past 14 months.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, November 18, 2005 at 11:33 PM (EST)

The best thing Green Day ever recorded was an interview with the radio show, Modern Rock Live, in about 1997. It's a gem - get a hold of it, if you can.

Posted by greenerton on 2005-11-18 14:39:15

Okay. Jason White has been a touring guitarist (something MANY bands have) for Green Day for many years now. He was in Pinhead Gunpowder with Billie Joe, and he was in the Influents, a band on Adeline Records, Billie Joe's record. They're good friends, so Green Day isn't just "dicking" Jason around. Get your fucking facts straight.

Who cares if Green Day has 2-3 people who help play extra parts live? What the fuck does it matter? They still write and play the songs.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, November 18, 2005 at 10:31 AM (EST)

I don't watch the Fuse either.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, November 18, 2005 at 9:10 AM (EST)

Jason White has been regularly part of the band since the start of the AI tour and that's about it.

I'm pretty sure he's been around a lot longer...wasn't he in the When I Come Around video or something like that.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, November 18, 2005 at 5:13 AM (EST)

I'd suck Billie Joe's dick any day of the week here, but I think we're all approaching a "Metallica moment" here, when the hardcore fans begin to realize that this band now embodies everything it was supposed to be fighting against. Jason White has been regularly part of the band since the start of the AI tour and that's about it. Occasionally, they'd have the roadie or some dude in a "Fetish" T-shirt play a few parts while Billie jumped around, but to have a fully fledged "ghost" member is unprecedented. Remember, this happened to Nirvana too. What did they do? Added the fucking fourth member! Green Day won't fucking add the fourth member b/c they're selfish brats and enjoy dicking Jason White around. They look like absolute assholes. Even the fucking Rolling Stones play their own music.

Posted by greenerton on 2005-11-18 01:58:19

they're not "mystery dudes", they played on the album and billie joe introduces them to the crowd every show. jason white has been playing with them for years...

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, November 18, 2005 at 1:07 AM (EST)
    My Score:

i think when your big enough that you can have a second guitarist on stage and people still call you a three peice, things are getting wierd.

Its one step away from lip synching. Pure laziness. No more heavy lifting, just hand gestures, and leading the crowd in the wave.

You can do that when your fucking Beck, of course no one expects one guy to be playing all the fucking instruments, but when you have this hangnail guitar player whose just there, and hes like the conjoined twin the band couldn't surgically remove, your fucking overstepping the bounds of 'is that abnormal?'.

If someone is playing your guitar parts while your onstage for your band, while you gesticulate, guess what, your not in your own band anymore, theres mystery men pushing you along. Why not have a second Drummer so the green day drummer can jump kick and do 80's hip hop arm folds at every chorus?

Superdude gets a 10 for his posts acronym.

-November 16, 1995. Cobo Arena in Detroit. ahhh, good times indeed. i missed walking contradiction though. that would have been cool to have heard that one live.

as much fun as GD are live, i do miss the days where it was just simply three guys on stage playing loud rock and kicking the audience's ass, without relying on pyrotechnics and additional personnel. the American Idiot tour was cool, but i do agree with someone earlier about the setlist though. it should have been more like the Warning tour, where old and new songs were given equal treatment.

wow....that setlist just blows away each time i saw them on the American Idiot tour (3 times!!) jeez, how come those songs didn't make it on the tour?? what the fuck, guys????

anyway, tonight is a major milesone. it was ten years ago tonight i saw Green Day for the first time and it was fantastic. they only confirmed to me that night all those years ago that they are my favorite band. i love these guys to death!!

oh yes, ten years ago was indeed the Insomniac tour. check out this setlist:

    Armitage Shanks
    Brat
    Welcome to Paradise
    Geek Stink Breath
    Chump
    Longview
    Stuck with me
    Brain Stew
    Jaded
    2,000 Light years away
    Knowledge
    Basket Case

    F.O.D.
    Road to Acceptance*
    Paper Lanterns
    ENCORE:
    all by myself
    dominated love slave
    when i come around
    86

*wasn't planned. Billie Joe broke a string on his guitar duing F.O.D. played Road to Acceptance just to give guitar tech time to fix Blue. marked the first time for me to see BJ play a guitar that wasn't Blue.

I got really excited after reading this review. I read it right before I went to work and it made me listen to Kerplunk on the way. I can't wait to see this show on FUSE.

The first time I saw Green Day, it was on the Warning tour in Jan. '01. This is easily in my Top 3 shows ever. Let's see what you all think about the set from that show. Hope I remember all this.... random order

    Nice Guys Finish Last (opener)
    She
    Longview
    Welcome To Paradise
    Platypus (I Hate You)
    Knowledge
    Hitchin' A Ride
    When I Come Around
    2,000 Light Years Away
    Brain Stew/Jaded
    Geek Stink Breath
    Castaway
    F.O.D.
    Warning
    Kind for a Day
    Blood, Sex, and Booze
    Waiting
    Basket Case
    Minority
Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) (closer before encore)
    Macy's Day Parade (closer)

I would've traded a couple from Warning or Nimrod for some more older songs, but otherwise I thought it was an awesome set.

If you dont like green day then whatever... but they're not responsible for the shitty acts that try following in their footsteps. And stop caling them sellouts. Chances are you probably dont even know what that means.

Cool setlist. I've never seen Green Day live, and as much as I love their albums, I really haven't been too interested in seeing them recently, mainly because their setlists have been looking pretty mediocre. But then, I tend to like their songs that weren't released as singles better than those that were, and most of their mainstream audience probably doesn't want to see them play those.

A good Green Day setlist would have to be heavy on songs from Warning, specifically "Church on Sunday," "Fashion Victim," "Castaway," and "Deadbeat Holiday."

Back in 1994, I already owned Dookie, but then I saw their concert from the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago on MTV, and they played that song. As soon as they finished, I knew I had to find the record that song was from. I need to go listen to it right now, frankly.

Goddamnit, I don't have 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours in my iTunes, meaning I don't have it with me here. Can someone IM it to me?

I mean...AI is good. Hell, its the best thing on commercial radio right now (an easy feat, I know, but still) but it is no Dookie, Insomniac, Nimrod, Warning, Kerplunk, or 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. They need tol start playing JAR again seeing as how it is the best song they ever wrote. Desensitized would be nice as well. Or anything off of Nimrod or Insomniac outside of the singles.

Why does everyone hate Nimrod so much? I sometimes think it is their best. Sometimes.

Oh, I forgot to mention a couple other gems from this show

Before they played Misery, Billie Joe played the entire opening of "Stairway to Heaven" before asking for requests. And for the opening of "Give Me Novacaine", he did two long "Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ohhhhhhhhhhh"s before starting the verses, it fucking cracked me up, but it was totally awesome at the same time. Such a great show, can't wait 'till they show it on FUSE.

I want to hear them play F.O.D.

hobbitcore: what companies have used American Idiot songs for advertising?

    i'm jealous.

can we all please stop finishing reviews with "all in all..." and "in conclusion..." ?

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 at 10:07 AM (EST)

are they still using the same rehearsed in between song banter?

crap i was using that setlist for reference and i forgot to delete it

Posted by hobbitcore on 2005-11-15 09:23:08

holy christ how come they couldn't play that set list on the tour with JEW (or the "second leg" of the American Idiot tour)...Welcome to Paradise. Letterbomb, I Fought the Law, MISERY, CLOSING WITH HOMECOMING, THREE PRE-DOOKIE SONGS...i got the same exact setlist both fucking times I saw them...so wack...they're good performers for an arena rock band I guess but that rock star bullshit sucks, especially for a band that used to play Gilman...they didn't sell out by signing to a major label...they sold out when they went with the pyro, heeey-ohs, 1-2-1-2-3-4s, and "NAME OF CITYYYYYYYYYYYY"s...oh and when they sold every fucking song on their "punk rock opera" to every fucking company that asked. have some artistic integrity for christ's sake.

that being said, Green Day rules, seeing them live was awesome, and American Idiot is amazing.

I happen to enjoy Superdudes template.... but anyway...

"I won’t go into too much detail on what I went through to get in, but we were the last two let in."

I don't think I want to know what you had to do...

people need to stop with this crap->

    1. you need to do this
    2. you need to do that
    3. ask a question
    4. your rveview sucks..

blah blah blah........your template is lame

This review was pretty good, but here's how I would make it beter:

    1. HELLO! No Wake me up When Septembe Ends? WTF! WMUWSE is the all time bezt Green Dayz song!

    2. I stopped listening to these guys once they started actually tuning thier instruments. Sell outs.

    3. Did they play American Idio the whole way through for the encore?

Posted by ThreeChordsAndTheTruth on 2005-11-15 07:50:27

I keep hearing about them playing old songs and shit now.. man. The only comfort I have now is a video bootleg from 1991 where they introduce Welcome To Paradise as "a new song". This show sounded great.

    My Score:

Score is for Green Day not playing the same set they've been playing for the last year and a half.

I've only seen them once and frankly the enormous arena, prepubescent crowd and the fact that Billie Joe seemed incapable of playing two songs in a row without taking a five minute break for WAY-OHs made it not worth the money. But this sounds awesome. Christie Road was always one of my favourite songs.

"i fought the law is a clash song

I hope that was flame bait. But just in case it wasn't, I'll calmly state: I Fought The Law was a Crickets song.

wait - was this whole thing about your mastubatory experience of being let into a tv show taping?

    wyzo

Posted by greenerton on 2005-11-15 02:59:18

I wasn't literally asking where "I Fought the Law" came from originally, I was referring to its place within the set list. It was awesome to hear live, it's definitely one of the last things I'd expect them to play.

Yeah I'm in the audioscrobbler group, and FUSE will be showing the full show on December 4th.

Posted by localh on 2005-11-15 02:50:53

I would definately sit through the shit that is American Idiot to see going to Pasalacqa and Christie Road holy shit that sounds awesome.....

Posted by colin on 2005-11-15 02:16:39

since it's fuse, they fuckign taped it right? i mean, there's a chance we'll get to at least see a soundboard recording of those kerplunk songs live?

that wouldn't match being there, but it'd be good enough for me.

Posted by swingline on 2005-11-15 02:16:13

greenerton... you must be in the punknews audioscrobblation group.
