Chicagoianites Mest are back with their fourth full-length album for Maverick, and it’s safe to say that no one thought it would be as ___________ (adjective) as this. For the better part of a decade, the band has been playing catchy, melodic pop-punk, which makes it no surprise and somewhat ___________ (adjective) that they would try and branch out into new territory.

A heavy Alkaline Trio vibe ___________ (verb) into many of the twelve tracks, and is especially evident in tracks like “Kiss Me, Kill Me” and “Graveyard.” Citing influences such as NOFX and Jimmy Eat World, Mest is able to create a___________ (adjective) ___________ (noun) of sound. The opener “Take Me Away” harkens somewhat back to their early “ska” days, and is clearly the ___________ (noun) of the album. Unmistakably having no beef with the producer from their previous albums, Mest brings back John Feldmann once again, resulting in a sound that is ___________ (adjective).

Many critics make an argument that Mest’s lyrics are ___________ (adjective), and Photographs is no exception. Like many bands in their genre, Mest has opted to go for a “darker” approach to this album. “Last Kiss” emotes, “Stare at you as you slit my wrist / and as we share our last kiss / hold me as we die / empty bottle to deal with this.” “Can’t Take This” is filled with sentiments of loneliness and confusion, such as “No one believes in me / no one sees what I see / should I just erase this all from my memory?” Words rhyming with “me” are used frequently, ___________ (verb ending with –ing) the overall effect.

Surprises are ___________ (adjective) present at every corner of Photographs. Guitar tones and vocal lines take cues from Robert Smith on “Tonight Will Last Forever.” “This Time” starts with only an acoustic guitar before ___________ (verb ending with –ing) into the climax. “Can’t Take This” features a relaxed and spacious first half, which really fits the ___________ (noun) of the song.

Overall, Phototgraphs is a ___________ (adjective) ___________ (noun) over their last album, 2003’s self-titled. It’s safe to say that ___________ (plural noun) ___________ (verb) ___________ (adjective) ___________ (noun).

What? Me? But I just said...never mind. Anyways, I'm sorry for the hostility, I was just venting some frustration. I shouldn't have even posted that shit. I don't even like Mest or Photographs all that much. I just can't believe you can't make the same case for this album as you did with the last one. I thought it was at least better than that crap. But this does mark the end of my putting any effort into Mest.

i'll admit i think 'destination unknown' and 'wasting time' are modern pop punk classics and you can suck my dick if you disagree. i was a big mest fan from 2000-2002, but the s/t was hit and miss and i could see the beginning of the end.

this album is so bad its laughable. it makes the s/t look like gold.

fuck feldman and fuck these morons.

addendum: i feel sorry for Alkaline Trio. seriously, they are (or 'were') a really great band. however, it's gotta be awful to be responsible for spawning the absolute shitfest of new bands (too many to count) that are tearing up the scene for 15 year olds everywhere. evil, booze, romance, come on man, get your own fucking ideas ya bunch of fakes.

I think that the people who are ripping on this review for being "cute" but "not conveying how the writer actually felt about the record" are really missing something. Look at the structure and what is given to you and what is intentionally left out. It's actually quite thorough and sensical, giving a really clear assessment of the record. I thought it was brilliant.

Unmistakably having no beef with the producer from their previous albums, Mest brings back John Feldmann once again, resulting in a sound that is ___________ (adjective).

This is NOT John Feldman's best production work of 2005. That honor belongs to Hilary Duff's new songs from the album Most Wanted.

I love it when people use such hilariously half-baked reasons for not "believing" in evolution. I mean, how stupid do you have to be to think that all those millions of scientists who have dedicated their productive lives to painstakingly proving evolution correct for the past 150 years wouldn't have thought of something that simple. I'll never understand why, after 700 years of progress, people still have a hard time seeing that if you disbelieve the scientific consensus you're probably being a fucking moron.

i really like this album although it is goin into the good charlotte "chronicles of life and death" catergory with alot more mainstream music. overall i like the fact that the lyrics are darker and the fact mest still sound the same like older albums and didn't just completely change for the stupid review that was pretty sad ay if you didn't like it just say so rather than being a looser about it. if that reviewer could produce an album that sounds half as good as that i will not call him a blody idiot!

Posted by thecaptain on 2005-12-02 20:46:57

I just noticed that this is the same guy who reviewed Mest's S/T, and he gave that album a respectable 3 stars. What a joke.

All of their albums are pussified pop-punk, but at least some of it is catchy and enjoyable. That album, on the other hand, was just plain bad.

Not to mention, I am not a Mest fan by any means, but I listened to this once through and thought it to be possibly the best thing they've ever released. Good enough for me to say it's good, though not so good that I listened to it twice.

I haven't been able to take this band seriously since their evolution comment in Alternative Press. The fact that his opposition to evolution stems from a lack of understanding of it, and the arrogance to use that as an argument against it is pretty laughable.

Let's be clear. We share a comment ancestor with apes. That is not the same as saying we came from apes. If you don't understand something as basic as that, you certainly shouldn't be criticizing the theory.

This should be an adverb not an adjective (unless you're using present as a noun (meaning 'gift'), which would require the article 'a').

Overall, Phototgraphs is a speedy brussel-sprout over their last album, 2003’s self-titled. It’s safe to say that thems suckle mad shit.

agreed, amazing review for a shitty album. though i'll admit to liking Take Me Away since I downloaded that biotch.

That was a hell of a review, i just put the word fuck (or some form of it) in for all of them. I'm surprised punknews put it up without editing it.

They try to sound like the Police on this thing. Hilarious and sad, all at once.
