Do British kids just sit around all day writing hooks? The Futureheads, Franz Ferdinand, and Bloc Party seem to be the forefront of a sudden modern “dance punk” movement, and it feels as if their songs are carefully crafted to make you clap your hands and hum along. Whatever the Brits are concocting in their basements, it seems to be a recipe for success, as their popularity seems to be growing exponentially. Earlier this year, Bloc Party released their first full-length, Silent Alarm, and received a slew of heavy compliments from the blog community and Pitchfork Media. Some felt this was undeserved and that the band, like many others members of this new movement, was shamelessly mimicking the Gang of Four (the band they claim to have never listened to up until being compared to them). And while they may or may not sound very similar to the Gang of Four (my opinion on the matter seems unimportant) you should at least check your comparisons at the door for now, because Silent Alarm Remixed goes in a totally different direction.

Another thing the British seem to love nowadays just as much as fresh and shiny hooks are techno dance clubs. And with that passion in mind, this remix album was born. The members of Bloc Party actually had very little to do with this release. Their songs were sent around and remixed by a number of different artists. The result is a release that is just as good if not better than the original Silent Alarm.

The CD starts out with a Ladytron Zapatista remix of “Like Eating Glass,” and instead of the song starting out with guitar teetering and a loud drum introduction, it appears with a slower, less rollicking tempo, delicate synth and string orchestrations, and vocalist Kele Okereke’s coos and croons. It’s an interesting take on one of Silent Alarm’s more rocking songs, but fear not because Whitey, Blackbox, and Phones strike back with stripped apart, spiced up techno edits of “Helicopter,” “Positive Tension,” and “Banquet.” Other songs of note, if you’re just browsing the record, are the Mogwai remix of “Plans” and the Death from Above 1979 “remix” (it’s actually a cover) of “Luno.”

Unfortunately, if you weren’t a fan of Bloc Party before, this album is not likely to convert you. It’s much more interesting from the perspective of a person who liked Silent Alarm to hear how some of the songs are rearranged, and perhaps you’ll even grow fonder of the remixes than the original versions (the “This Modern Love” remix blows the original out of the water). For those of you who did enjoy Silent Alarm, I highly recommend this release, and for those of you who didn’t I recommend you go make some sort of sammich…those always make me happy.

In retrospect I should've labled this band and all their peers the New Wave of Post-Punk. Oh well... there's always next time.

    My Score:

The Minotaur Shock remix of 'Tulips' is actually a hidden track after 'Compliments'. I liked parts of this (Four Tet's remix is stunning, Mogwai, Nick Zinner, M83, Engineers), but it's not really worth buying the whole album. This is one for all y'all downloaders.

'Silent Alarm' is a fucking untouchable record, though.

I didn't feel like reading everything you said. But you did start prearchign to me about punk was and I felt the need to tell you I don't wish to uphold that... and I don't feel like reading your big long winded "comeback". It's an internet forum, don't put so much thought into it.

Bloc Party = third rate gang of four rip off band. They will be in the cut out bin in 6 months right next to franz ferdinand, the killers, the futureheads and rest of the bands ripping off 1980's new wave bands. I'll buy it then. They are worth about 3 dollars.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, December 22, 2005 at 11:36 PM (EST)

"1. I'm not punk. I am not attempting to uphold punk ethics. 2. If you make a snide remark about me, I'm going to respond. 3. I could give two shits if you respect my reviews. 4. It openly says in my review that Bloc Party is not everybody's bag, and I completely understand that. I would not go out of my way to defend Bloc Party, they're a guilty pleasure of mine, but sometimes the level of class you people show on this forum is just atrocious. Grow a pair, and understand that when you say shit I say shit back and that some people like different things from you."

Did I ever call you a punk? The idea of judging something as art, regardless of popularity or "who cares about it" is relegated to "punk" now?

Maybe everyone thinks your reviews suck because you have to always defend them in the dumbest ways- Where my band is on the pop charts doesn't matter when I'm talking about why Bloc Party suck. The fact that Pitchfork wouldn't even review the album I send them doesn't mean shit about my taste in music. All that "where are you?" crap is just build up for your rock star worship. If we're going to judge it by those standards, I could easily tear apart Bloc Party for making fun of Paris Hilton- after all, she has more money and notoriety than they will ever have in all of their "sassy," "dance-punk" lives.

All I'm saying is that it's not cool that you judge music like this, and more people than just me will lose respect for your views because of it. No one needs the NME on Punknews, informing us of the newest alternative radio trends. Let's leave that to the bullshit music industry.

So take that into account before you post another sniveling little reply between wiping the message-board induced tears from your eyes, Marlon.

This whole "I'll review your band when people care about them!" crap has destroyed any respect I have for your reviews.

And I hate the song because it's as dull as ditchwater. Bog standard guitar music with a shitty hook.

Ooops. Ok, so they're probably not Mexican. I assumed it meant something along the lines of amateur, newbie etc. I assumed wrong.

Whatever, they still look greener than a fresh lettuce.

What's a wetback in the British definition? I'm fairly certain you mean something very different than what it means in America.

Posted by Marlon on 2005-12-21 15:09:08

Is that a reason to not like the song? I mean, as not to say that you can't find reasons to hate the song, but I don't think THAT is a good reason to not like it.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at 3:06 PM (EST)

Like those fucking wimpy wetbacks have even been on a dancefloor. They look exactly like the types of people that would mope at the side of the hall during the school disco. I'd wager that they know little to nothing about dancing.

    My Score:

These guys get a bad rap for being too successful. The music is certainly not as bad as a lot of other stuff. I do like a lot of the songs on this album. A lot of the problem has to do with the fact that Pitchfork likes them. A lot of kids rebel against Pitchfork just because they are too scene.

The thing is, these days it's scene to hate the scene.

Not too big on the remixed version. I was hopeful that M83 would turn out something a lot better.

I'll stick to the original album. I'm starting to hate these "remix" albums. Somehow they manage to bring down the originality their other albums had. Another good example is Death From Above 1979.

You know guys... it's loose term that technically goes from all of these bands to bands like Les Savy Fav and Death From Above 1979 for a reason... it's not really a definitive genre. No reason to shout its merrits back and forth.

"This is not "dance punk." "Dance punk" if you're even gonna call it that, is "post punk" in the vein of Gang of Four, and this is neither of those."

Not at all. Gang of Four used crazy time signatures and the most angular guitar you'll ever hear. They were danceable, but that wasn't the point of the band... Calling bands "dance-" anything relegates them to being bands that just want people to dance and don't care about making much of a statement.

"Don't call the Futureheads Dance Punk and don't use their name in the same sentence as Franz Ferdinand."

As long as they remain to be from the same country and make music in a simalir fashion to each other, I reserve the right to use them in the same sentence.

Posted by darkstarm on 2005-12-20 17:24:21

Good lord. I think most of the kids on here haven't even heard this band.

This is not "dance punk." "Dance punk" if you're even gonna call it that, is "post punk" in the vein of Gang of Four, and this is neither of those. There are some tracks that have a GoF vibe, but for the most part Bloc Party is pretty melancholy music. Something tells me all you guys heard was the single.

This is quality music. I can't understand why people love to hate good music that's also popular. Their loss.
