Like nails singing on a chalkboard.This is how its very own label refers to the sonic madness that is Head Wound City. Made up of Jordan Blilie and Cody Votolato from the Blood Brothers, Nick Zinner from Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Justin Pearson and Gabe Serbian from the Locust, you immediately know this band is gonna be one hell of a ride. It's extremely difficult to describe the band's music, but here's a good try: Imagine the elements that make the Blood Brothers still be considered a hardcore band instead of an experimental one, mixed in with the acid-punk madness of the Locust, though including both the Locust and Blood Brothers' strange yet dancey tunes and rythms, nicely dotted here and there with some Yeah Yeah Yeahs influences. The songs on the CD are incredibly short, most not reaching even the one-minute count. Yet Head Wound City makes this work just as easily as the Locust does. Small songs, but with so much energy in them they could easily light a room on fire. In my opinion, the song that describes most of the album perfectly is "I'm a Taxidermist, I'll Stuff Anything." Fast yet timed drumming, spastic guitar work, with Jordan's screeches blasting out the speakers. On a curious note, Jordan's screaming partner in the Blood Brothers, Johnny, also started his own side project, known as Neon Blonde. The way I see it is that, while Johnny took the dancable side of the Blood Bros. over to Neon Blonde, Jordan took their madness and hardcore influences over to Head Wound City. An amazing effort by the Brothers' frontman and Co. It will never compare to what Johnny and Jordan can do together, but it sure is a good way to wait to see what the Bros. will lash out next. i listened to one song off the threeoneg site and jizzed my pants Nick Zinner is the coolest member of the YYYs and Jordan has the greatest voice in music today, so how can this be bad? what band said texas is the reason emo kids suck Blood Brothers The Locust love the album, iffy-review. Damn. 7 songs at under 10 minutes. Learn to use caps. It makes you look less like a fool. Besides the fact that you're completely wrong. distorto hardcore? oh fuck, now wills just making shit up It's spazzier than the distorto hardcore of Some Girls... Which is probably my favorite of his bands, at the moment. Yeah, to be honest, it does sound more like Some Girls than anything. J.P. just has a problem writing a song without making it sound like, well, sometihng that J.P. wrote. Take away the spazz elements that go into The Locust and Holy Molar, and you end up with Some Girls and Head Wound City. That's how it goes. 7 songs. how long is this EP? and how many songs? so, does it kinda sound like some girls? or is it less hardcore more spazz? Yes, there is no hint of the Blood Brothers' "madness" in Neon Blonde judging by the members in this band (without yet hearing it) this is the worst group of people on the planet. I've seen way too many 17-year olds playing in "funny" blastbeat bands complete with kids wearing diapers, and zany "antics" this year already. You know - jangly riffs, shouted parts, multiple vocalists etc. I'm beginning to wonder if these kids actually listen to serious blastbeat hardcore or are they just like "look at the racket we make!!! Aren't we WEIRD?!?" My #3 overall this year. Fucking sweet. Given to what I heard so far, I probably lean more towards Neon Blonde. But HWC isn't so bad. It's appeal is growing by each listen. All the songs but 2 reach the one-minute count. I don't think that counts as most. Best thing out on three one g? The swing kids discography. I prefer Nurse With Wound, but this is good shiz. I hate everything about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs except their music, which makes me hate them even more This is really good if you like spazz rock type stuff ala Locust or early Blood Brothers. The guitar playing is really good. Maybe that's just because I know the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a lot better than most people chalk them up to be. Well, it sounds exactly like you'd expect it to. |
