You know, the other day I was sitting around thinking, "Hey, do you know what we REALLY need right now? Another two-piece band that makes 'dance' music with a distored bass and annoying high-pitched vocals." Or wait, no, what was I doing? Oh right, the exact opposite of that. Man, let me tell you, the last thing we need is ANYTHING that mixes rock with electro/dance music. Death from Above 1979 already slaughtered that genre in 2004. And even then, they're cut-rate compared to Big Business or Lightning Bolt. So then I guess that makes Mommy and Daddy third-string, hunh?

Musically, the songs try to be "edgy" with the distorted bass and the upbeat tempos and loud reverb vocals. You know, Big Business style, but without all the rock that makes Big Business good. I'd actually lump these dudes closer to Le Tigre than anything, and well, Le Tigre is fun, but these dudes ain't. Simple as that.

I must be soundin' like a total hater right now, eh? Well, it's true. For the life of me, I can't in any way see the merit in this album. I mean, honestly, it's not horrible, it's not just mediocre, it's actually just so bland and repetitive that it's not worth listening to. I mean, when your music relies on two instruments, drums and bass, the only way to keep it interesting is to have a good drummer and a good bass player. And, well, the drummer is a machine, literally, and the bass player is just stealing DFA 1979 riffs. Like, straight off the muthafuckin' record. And the whole dude doing the high-pitched vocals...sounds exactly like DFA 1979. I mean, EXACTLY. This shit ain't original or ground-breaking or anything. It's like some dudes got their brains turned on by a band and then sounded EXACTLY like them.

These guys are to DFA 1979 as Screeching Weasel is to the Ramones, only, you konw, Screeching Weasel was fun.

Yeah, I know there's a girl in the band and I keep saying, "These dudes," and stuff, but she sounds like a man, so hah.

This record is trash.

wow some of you are ridiculous. just because they may have a lame cover doesnt mean the cd is terrible. plenty of cds have terrible cover art.

by the way in the review, you come off as an music elitist douche.

just thought id let you know.

never heard of this band, nor do i have an opinion about them

Well, ripping off the Ramones is okay because that's a really basic formula you can play with and still retain fun. How can you be a good rip off of a band with a very specific sound? Also, what about when that band sucks (like DFA)?

I was first introduced to Big Business when the opened for High On Fire. They put on one of the most entertaining sets I've seen in awhile.

I totally agree about the Fiery Furnaces. I have listened to their albums over and over, trying to find some sort of thing I could like and get attached to. I'm just not feeling it at all.

DFA 1979 don't really make dance music, some of their shit is really cool.

The Black Keys are fucking great.

Big Business are really cool live, but not that great on record.

    The Fiery Furnaces are garbage

White Stripes are ok sometimes, definetly not dance music.

Deadboy and the Elephantmen are tits. You'll know them soon enough.

Mommy and Daddy are pretty boring.

what two-piece dance outfits are you referring to?

    Every band ever sucks.

My hip hop group was going to open for them once, but weather cancelled the show. Oh well.

Man, Big Business slays. End of story. It's Karp pt. 2 with a better drummer. How can it be bad?

Posted by stevejonestherealbones on 2006-02-12 13:24:17

i would never even let this NEAR any of my stereos based on the cover art.

and if DFA want to keep me as a fan, they better fucking drop that remix bullshit and release something fucking good.

and that should be every bands goal. KEEPING ME AS A FAN

    - oh and they should probably just sever any ties they have with steve aoki. i dont trust that dude, or his 2 fast 2 furious sister.

    - and whats the deal with that chick being in 2 fast 2 furious. she's not even hot. she barely registers as cute. i thought, oh , "who is this chick, she's not very hot, she must be a good artist then and a real artist" and then they show her drawings and they were complete shit. thats when you start thinking she sucked off the director for the job

dfa, big business, and lightning bolt may all be bass and drum bands, but they all sound nothing alike. there is no point in comparing them to eachother.

and ruins are the best drum/bass combo anyway

    This CD blew.

    Big Business is terrible.

    DFA79, however, are tits.

(I personally don't care for Lightning Bolt, but can respect their influence.)

Big Business and Lightning Bolt are cut-rate compared to the Immortal County Killers II.
