Matchbook Romance began their journey hailed as something much greater than they were. They were a fairly stereotypical, whiny third wave emo band that somehow managed to land a humungous deal with Epitaph Records. On Voices, they attempt to qualify their signing by writing a more "mature" record, drawing heavy from the likes of Radiohead and Muse, but most notably Gatsbys American Dream. What results is a mediocre effort from a band who is certainly reaching but ultimately fails due to nothing more than short arms.

Changed my score to how i feel about this album now. T.S.S. id like to say the best mbr cd even though at first i didnt really think so ive grown to like it alot more I love this album.. Score's for bit torrent and not having to pay for this very mediocre cd. I love Matchbook Romance.. But this CD definitely isn't the best one they've made.. I liked Stories And Alibis.. I even Liked their EP West For Wishing better.. It's totally dissapointing.. I expected way more from them.. I mean Brand New changed their style too on their sophmore record but COME ON this is bullshit.. I hope the next one is better.. I mean it can't get any worse can it?? Many music magazines operate on dumbed down scoring scales. Shit, some don't even use scales, look at Buddyhead: Axel Rose emoticons. "Werent you the one that also gave a 3 to the new Hawthorne Heights cd." Absolutepunk is neither absolute nor punk. Quite the misnomer. My score is not for this shitty Cd, it's for how good the Bass player plays the mouth organ! "Werent you the one that also gave a 3 to the new Hawthorne Heights cd." "Don't waste your hard earned cash on this crap........" Matchbook Romance - Voices Don't waste your hard earned cash on this crap........ Crazytoledo's statement is correct, mind the broken English. hey crazytoledo lets work on that there proper english thing Each review was wrote by Brian. yep, based on one listen i thought of Muse and MCR more than once. you all are hearin what i'm hearin, glad i'm not alone. way overhyped. it sounds decent, but this is not nearly as awesome as absolutepunk is hyping it to be. AP's 3/5 seems a bit more accurate. nope, i don't like this cd or band. don't give me shit about how i went into it with a grudge. i didn't. i just don't like it. give me my propagandhi albums. http://punknews.org/reviews.php?op=albumreview&id=319 STRUNG OUT. comment below makes my head hurt. You guys need to get a hold of yourself. Just becuase you guys came into this cd with a grudge against this band doesn't mean you have to bash on a good band and a good album. If you guys are going to complain about the comment made in AP then it's probably not going to get you anywhere, you will never be the establishment that AP has built . The comment that was made was probably true. I can't believe it but these guys made a damn good CD. I like every song until about song seven and then it goes down hill but thats way more than I can say for most CDs lately. i'm listening to this for the first time right now. anyoone else reminded of muse - absolution? I can't believe it but these guys made a damn good CD. I like every song until about song seven and then it goes down hill but thats way more than I can say for most CDs lately. "The song that everyone is raving about ("Monsters") sounds just like My Chemical Romance." Stories and Alibis was good compared to this. What happened? The song that everyone is raving about ("Monsters") sounds just like My Chemical Romance. I'm amazed. On the third listen and I'm completely impressed. I don't know what all of you are talking about, this is a GREAT record. Try to have an open mind to hear good music. bahhh..its a boring band.. bigwig sucks you morons I think that explains alot about you. my parents run it though i live in a public library I did until I moved out two years ago... Nope. I'm in highschool and the family computer is upstairs. My house doesn't have a basement. Matchbook Romance - Voices I wrote that. when i first heard the album i thought it was garbage but after a couple listens it's starting to grow on me its not a big deal. scott probably wrote that Exact quote is in the Wiretapping area under the 'Marriages' section from the briefing: Garbage Usually Jones doesn't make me laugh, but that last one got me. I'd be complaining too if I lived in a basement. Shit can get could in the winter, and if there's heaving rain, you're potentially fucked. Alternative Press alternative press is neither alternative nor an example of actual press. Discuss. I don't think its MBR that are talking shit about us, its Alternative Press that did the shit talking, at least that's the impression that I get. Wow, so Scott and this site help these pricks get signed and they talk shit? I forgot to mention that this album cover is about as stylish as my 10th grade graphics class project, which wasn't that great. Alternative Press Alternative Press "somehow managed to get a humungous deal with epitaph"??!! I've had the Bigwig record for like a week. I've had this for...at least a month. I need to let Bigwig sink in for a bit before I write something. i think they are talking about alt press since that is what brian has written reviews for. dont know what shit talking they are talking about though I got pissed when AP bashed Punknews in the one article. only good song the have is promise. GAD is a great band. not punk, but a great band nonetheless crap 2 and a half stars is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too high a score for this hyena shit of a CD. I just noticed your name matches up with a few reviews for AP. I noticed it before but never went to the about us page and checked the last name. to all the people bitching 'blah blah, theres no bigwig review,' check the site more frequently. i like the new bigwig, am i a bad person everything after monsters on this cd is boring, the stuff before it sucks, but monsters is actually pretty decent Rubbish band, but monsters is an ok song first of all if u dont like matchbook romance why are u here. of course ull give it a crappy rating. I will admit this isnt their best effort but its still decent for what they like to do. play pop-punk 3rd wave emo. Bigwig. Hilary Duff. Bomb the Music Industry. "somehow managed to land a humungous deal with Epitaph Records." once again, nice dudes.....not a nice record..... these dudes are worse than fall out boy live. its more of an endurance test than anything else no one really needs a bigwig review. everyone has heard it and it sounds like bigwig why don't we all spice up this week's reviews and everyone (who has it already) post a review of Oh! Calcutta? i'm sure they got a check for scoring this as a mediocre record. MB is kick ass but this album did not satisfy me. It actually put me to sleep. I heard the single "Monsters" and thought this album would be good, but I heard the complete opposite. Hopefully at Take Action they will play their older stuff. Wanna know what was surprsingly good? this album sucks, wheres bigwig review Dude, what gets reviewed gets reviewed. Great review, Brian. I agree 100%. how is there a review for this terrible album, but no review for the terrible bigwig release? you guys are a bunch of sellout homos. sorry that fearless didnt write you a check this month, its in he mail......i swear Suck on that all those people who said this record would blow their critics away. Monsters is catchy as hell. It's almost like... rockabilly. It's got the right bass and drums for it. terrible |
