Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Philadelphians the Loved Ones were blessed for writing and recording the "100K" song last year for their first EP release on Jade Tree. That song really was, and still is, a marvel, and without any doubt helped them getting signed to Fat Wreck Chords. No wonder the song was re-recorded for this album, although I must say it lost some of its roughness in the Brian McTernan treatment it received here. Of course, the fact that this band includes members that formerly had been playing with Kid Dynamite, the Curse and Paint It Black didn't do them any bad for that matter, either. You can say they grew up in the right neighbourhood.

The first full-length for these 3 guys is already in as a possible contender for my end of the year’s list of 2006, that's for sure. People awaiting another Paint It Black or Kid Dynamite hardcore punk album with a political message will be left unserved though, as this is no other than what I would describe as a darkish rock'n'roll sound that had a double-speeded metronome treatment while writing these songs. It's got all the hooks and punches you'd expect from a Fat Wreck band alright, but stripped down to its bear essence, this is nothing more than classis rock'n'roll song compositions. Actually, it reminded me a bit of Cadillac Blindside's or maybe even Ann Beretta's sound. Dave Hause's gruffy vocal duties, although sometimes sounding a bit as if he's not that talented of a natural singer, really are a relief for me again. I know I've been saying this a lot, but aren't we all a bit tired of the nice sounding, poppy-sweet vocals? I have to admit though that I'm not that enthusiastic about the lyrics here. Why do all these musicians seem to have such difficulties in life? Seems like all their relationships are going wrong, have to cry out for their parents for help, fear aging, and live with the weight of the world on their own shoulders. Come on, there's much worse things going on in this world than feeling bad about yourself. But OK, musicians write heartfelt music, and if that’s what's in the guy's heart, so be it.

This album has songs in different speeds, going from rather slow-paced buildup ("Sickening") to pretty fast ("Over 50 Club") songs, but the main portion is quite rocking, mid-tempo catchy guitarded work with a pounding drum section that is really dominantly present. Besides the already mentioned "100K," I most enjoyed the songs "Please Be Here," "Arsenic," and especially "Jane." That last song has its so-often tested and approved grabbing vocal intro, an unbelievably melodic catchy chorus and breakdown guitars that get me wet in my pants. Also worth mentioning is closing song "Player Hater Anthem," one about passion for music with a little satire for the bands looking for money in music.

I’m not sure if this music is "2006 enough" for the younger kids, who according to me seem to prefer either the harder (emo) hardcore or the more mellow, cleaner work, but for me this album is sounding pretty genuine and mature, although this band has only been around for a few years. More importantly, it rocks and has the ability to stick long after, and it's flawlessly produced. That's how I like my music these days.

I totally love this album. I think it's got variety, yet every song still sounds like The Loved Ones. It's catchy but in a nice way. Melodic, but not in a pussy way. And yes I have to agree Dave looks like a pained sheep. But he's fucking brilliant! Really want to see them live.

The latest effort by my home state of PA's band the Loved Ones is nothing short of amazing. I have to admit that lately I have been skeptical of anything that Fat Wreck puts out...but with new releases like this one, and from bands like Dead To Me, Fat Mike and Co. have redeemed themselves in my eyes :). Songs like "Jane" and "Hurry Up and Wait" are some of the more upbeat highlights. This album's sound just rocks and uplifts the listener. Positivity punk at its finest!

    My Score:

Saw the Loved Ones last night @ 924 Gilman- they were pretty damn good. Paint It Black were charged up and really overshadowed them since it was more a fast/punk/edge show (Go It Alone headlined). Still, a stellar double bill, Loved Ones/Paint It Black!

As for the Philly summary below by anonymous, I've no idea if it's true but it made for enjoyable reading. Being a Philly ex-pat (left in 1989, way before any of these bands began), I just hear bits and pieces of new Philly bands over the years so I don't necessarily follow them based solely on their ex-band list. Old band played with Kid Dynamite, then the last band played with Paint It Black, so their live shows made me a fan, which made me buy the records. Loved Atom/Package & "The Philadelphia Story" comp, never got into Ink and Dagger or Lifetime (fuck, did I just get banned from punknews?).

Score is for the live show.

I bought this under the impression it was a really good pop-punk record. For someone who defines pop-punk as being something along the lines of the brilliant designs of the Descendents, I was really let down by this record... if this is how people define that genre now-a-days, then that really sucks.

Philadelphia has too many bands with too few people/ideas going on right now.
So kid dynamite ended and reunited twice but they became 2 bands with names that confuse the shit out of everyone. First was none more black who's first 7 inch got me hyped about 4 years ago and took a not so subtle dig at kid dynamite. Then they made a boring album. Then came paint it black and the question "why the fuck did they name their band that when the other kid dynamite ex-member band was none more black?" annoying, but philadelphians are smart and we dealt with it. So they played their first show at the church with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. seriously the yeah yeah yeahs, no joke. So we all left kind of laughing at yemin's henry rollins impersonation. Around the same time they put out a demo with four songs that was neat but kind of dullingly angry. Also the curse were playing around and stealing the show from both bands. Their demo and ensuing EP dominated and they stole the show on the sound of philadelphia ten inch. at this point 3 years ago(?) the curse were really the band to watch and to tell the truth knives out were out doing both black bands, but they fell apart shortly after their "dieing in a snow storm sucks" tour. hey became tokyo who were also good but couldn't get their asses in gear. around this time paint it black got too boring for a good portion of the city to stand and the curse, the band that we were all banking on, called it a day. this led to the loved ones, which had a pretty dope 3 song demo about 2 summers ago and a nice ep, but aren't living up to their potential in LP form. So it sounds like philadelphia really has it going on, but the sad fact is that too many of these lineups overlap and are the same old suspects. people rightfully go check out their early shows and grab up their demos and ep but their albums never live up to the hype. look at yemin's latest effort armalite. just like the black bands, tokyo, the curse, knives out, the loved ones, etc they have long "member lists" but not many great ideas. the red flags should have gone up years ago when early highlights of curse and knives out shows were semi surprise reunions of their old bands stepahead and i hate you. in top of that there are too many kill the man who questions alums kicking around. they weren't that great of a band to beggin with. so it looks like philadelphia has it going on with the punk rock and hardcore scene but to be honest we are bored with most of the bands that outsiders fawn over. its the same ten people making half assed albums. paint it black is almost parody and the rest are mediocre. lets have the curse come back and yemin focus on lifetime only. atom and the armalite crew can go home.

Ha, nice one with the name. Ironically enough, swingline and I listen to a lot of the same bands.

Also, I wasn't "hating" on Bigwig or TLA. I just pointed out that what they play isn't markedly different from a lot of the stuff that gets criticized around here. I also listen to their music, just like I listen to the Loved Ones, demos and all.

Seriously, is what I'm saying that hard for people to understand?

Posted by historypeats on 2006-02-22 21:43:28

Ha, the server ate my first comment because it said I took too long.

No, swingline, I don't listen to Top 40 radio, or watch MTV, or what have you. I liked Take This to Your Grave, but I've been listening to it for years, whereas I doubt you ever have. It's not my favorite CD, and pop-punk isn't my favorite genre. I listen to a lot of different kinds, and therefore like a lot of different bands. The fact that I liked a Fall Out Boy CD before they became a buzz band doesn't mean I don't also like some of the bands listed in your Last FM page, or that I don't have the right to point something out. Finally, it's not like I'm some blind Fall Out Boy whore/fanboy; I saw their live show once, didn't like it, and haven't bought anything of theirs or seen them again since.

Anyway, I like Keep Your Heart, but think it's only worth a 6 or 7 (TTtYG would be a 6). I think people are overrating it because the members were in better bands before forming The Loved Ones, instead of judging the CD on its own merits. It's not revolutionary, it's just decent pop-punk.

You could have just responded to what I wrote instead of pulling an unrelated quote, since you really didn't invalidate my statement about site members' tendency to fetishize stuff that really isn't markedly different or better than the music they hate.

"Yeah, I have File Under Black. It's exactly why I fear they're an EP band. If you took out all but like 6 songs, it'd be freaking amazing. The rest bog it down, though.
Oh, no. We like a band a lot that you don't get. Must make us fanboys. This is not just competently played pop-punk. These guys sound better than Green Day does after a decade and a half, and that's coming from a dyed in the wool Green Day fan. Some of us prefer power chords and awesome lyrics, coupled with hooks that put AC/DC or Cheap Trick to shame.
And just because its not artsy or confusing doesn't mean it's not challenging. Go listen to CDs by the bands you listed, specifically the Lawrence Arms' "The Greatest Story Ever Told". Really listen to it, not just give the so-called telephone song a spin. Analyze it. Listen to the way the production actually becomes a part of the song. How Chris blends actual chords with power chords to create a warm yet heavy sound, unlike most guitar tones I've heard on albums. Actually read the lyrics (more Chris's than Brendan's). Recognize the improbably mix of loud and angry punk and restrained subtlety. Try and think of another band that's written anything that sounds like that."

I think it just has similar production. At least the drums. I don't think the song itself is very similar at all, cause American Idiot sounds like Doublewhiskeycokenoice. Speaking of which, I agree with the guy below, we need a new D4 record.

the band sounds really good and is best experienced when you can hear the vocals, but can't decipher the mundane lyrics. repeated listens allow the listener to pick up more lyrics and the songs decrease in quality quite a bit, but damn, listening to this for the first time was goddamn envigorating.

"Of course, the fact that this band includes members that formerly had been playing with Kid Dynamite, the Curse and Paint It Black didn't do them any bad for that matter, either. You can say they grew up in the right neighbourhood."

After reading those two sentences, I figured out that the album isn't worth buying.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at 12:27 PM (EST)

But we need a review so that we can all comment on it. :)

Also, about the question of the cussing being removed from Benson And Hedges. I have no idea why, but it wasn't removed from Arsenic, and the lyrics to that song would probably offend most parents before a few swear words would. So I'd venture to say there was another reason Benson And Hedges was changed.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at 12:26 PM (EST)

why even review this record? i think its pretty clear that 90% of commenters/readers are in awe of this band and the other 10% think they sound like every other pop punk band out there.

    That doesn't make any sense.

I don't know if you know this or not, but the amount of people that comment the contributors are no signs of the plethora of people, bands, record labels, etc. that actually read PNdotO.

anyone saying that the demo versions of "jane" or "arsenic" are better is probably just saying it to sound hip. the demo versions have so many unnecessary parts (which the band obviously realized) and the LP versions are so much more concise and to the point.

so i'm "hip" because i liked the way the lyrics were written for The Odds in the demo version a little bit more than the album version? don't make stupid-ass assumptions, please.

Yeah, I have File Under Black.
Try and think of another band that's written anything that sounds like that.

"[100k] really was, and still is, a marvel, and without any doubt helped them getting signed to Fat Wreck Chords."

See, there really isn't much difference between 100k and most of the melodic/pop-punk out there. It's played well, but so is most of the stuff on the radio. It doesn't break any new ground, it doesn't challenge you - it just treads old ground very competently.

The fetishizing of this record, and of certain others, is yet more proof that this board is just as dominated by a group of fanboys as any other. The Lawrence Arms, Bigwig...Jesus, guys, they don't play phenomenal or special music. They play average-to-good songs, and for that a lot of people fall all over themselves trying to praise them.

Keep Your Heart is a good record, but it won't change the world, and it definitely isn't near-perfect (as a 9 would indicate).

Posted by Scruffy on 2006-02-21 00:47:03

The EP only really had 2 great songs. It was all sweet, but the 3rd song was a HWM ripoff, the 4th was all acoustic, so it didn't have as much "umph!", and the last song seemed to center around just one riff. The first two were what made it. This CD has 13 songs as good as those first two songs, including a song that sounds kinda like Lifetime (Over 50 Club).

Anyway, didn't he? Someone know? I'm too lazy to dig out the booklet.

Posted by Scruffy on 2006-02-21 00:36:22

McTernan did the EP as well, didn't he. So it's not his fault that 100K might seem lackluster, though I think it's just as awesome as the original. Definitely not a step up, but some changes of the kind that any of us might sing it differently when we're bored and alone in the car. Definitely for the fans who know the EP version.
And so what if the lyrics are kind of a downer? Most artists tend to use their art to exorcise their demons. I know I do. It's not that life always sucks or things are so bad, boohoo me. It's that, when things are down, not only is it very inspiring, but one of the best ways to work through it is by writing. And, when you're writing, the hope that maybe whjat you're writing will help someone else going through the same thing someday helps you out as much as the confessiopnal nature of songwriting does.
This album is awesome. I was worried before I bought the album today that The Loved Ones would be more of an EP band, and that a full-length would drag on too long. Not so. Let's hope the Falcon and None More Black can impress me similarly this year.
My only complaint with the album is, as Hein mentioned, that so many songs start the same way. Vocals over guitar for half of a verse and then the drums and bass kick in. If the next album has the same thing, it could be bad, but for these few songs, it works.
This is the first album I've bought this year that will be on my best of 2006 list.
