Oh, don't get me wrong, I love Heart of Darkness--that leant itself very well to analytical discussion. Plus we got to watch Apocalypse Now! in class. How fucking sweet was that?

We never read Catcher in high school. I feel robbed.

What did we read? Of Mice and Men and Heart of Darkness. Can't remember the other ones.

Anyway, I feel robbed.

The hunting hat symbolizes how he wants to change who he is, like how he gives a fake name to the woman on the train to NY. In my essay on Catcher, I said that the "greatest irony is that while Holden accuses everyone around him of being phonies, he is, himself, a 'phony'". Oh, here in MD, we read Catcher sophmore year...bitch.

just bullshit it. if you have suffienct quotes in the book to back up your assumptions then your teacher will have a lot of trouble telling you that you're wrong

Speaking of Catcher In The Rye, I have to write a research paper on the importance and imagery of Holden's red hunting hat. Now, I can google and check Sparknotes for whatever ballyhoo people have come up with about the subject, but I feel very dirty writing this paper when I personally believe that the red hunting hat means absolutely nothing other than the fact that Holden is really into red hunting hats. Most of the explanations I see online are ridiculous stretches of the imagination, grasping at any possible connection between his hat and the events in the story.

I read one explanation that since Holden wore it backwards and the only hat worn backwards on the baseball field is the catcher, it was his way of showing that he missed his brother. Because of his brother's glove. I guess.

I think there's a reason that Salinger never talked about the book in public, and it's because he finds some sort of humor in seeing people not realizing that some things should be taken at face value, even if it is great (Good, I thought) literature.

Just fuming and looking for ways to procrastinate with this paper.

I like Catcher In The Rye. But as a junior in high school, what I don't like is how many cats want to liken themselves to Holden.

I really like it too, I just think it could have been so much more. Individually the songs are all OK (some great) but the EP as a whole just falls short of the mark I reckon.
